I think merit points can also be awarded for reporting spam posts.
Like for every successful report, you get a merit point from the system.
By reporting spam, the members not only help clean the forum they also gain something and that will keep them motivated.
I know there will be some pros and cons on that too, we can discuss them here. This suggestion surely needs some discussion.

I don't think on a granular level like this it would work, but maybe giving the most accurate reporters merit it may, say the top 5% and give them 100 merits a month each. It may encourage others to help clean up the forum.

This has been discussed before, here is the last discussion we had yesterday with LoyceV. If you search you can find a lot of info. I have suggested it before, but in a 1 Merit per 100 reports (say >95% accurate) ratio. I don't think it's worth making 100 bad posts just to report them, when it's easier to just find 100 bad posts. And if someone reports 1000 posts, I don't mind him reaching Member status. Even if his own posts aren't that good, he'll have a positive net contribution to the forum after 1000 reports.
As I agree with you I see also weakness. Let us take the ICO pumpers as an example, the bots are creating thousands of comments per day, I try to spare some time to browse and report some profiles in the ANN section, but there is just an disaster, well this is other topic. As bots are created to post in the threads, seems to be easy to make a bot to report threads. Here is an example of a report link > https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=reporttm;topic=3292413.27;msg=34433583 Well, you have some cool down time between reports for sure, but I don't think this will stop them as they can adjust the time between reports. So you have two bots running, one spamming, other reporting. Then you have an extra income when doing the ico pumps from farming menit and selling accounts. There is an option like captcha to be added for both posting and reporting, but many users already have trouble using it for login so it has to be locally integrated. Of course there will be real people reporting too, so it's kind of put the shiposters to do some good work, but I don't know what will be the impact of reporting. This I suggested back in the beginning when the merit was introduced, but as I analyze it a little further I saw a lot of possibilities to cheat the system so... Here is one idea, merit points as a reward for reporting spam posts/accounts.

It's a good idea to me. With the arrival of the merit - people began to write good posts, but the forum will increase the number of users every day. Those who have not yet entered the system of ranks (merit) and write simply posts or some sort of spam to raise their own versatility. Sooner or later they will come to the rank of juniors and start the hunt for merit, and sometimes you can find bad posts or topics. Therefore, I consider it a good thing to reward those who found spam))) You might find, for example, found 10 spam posts = 1 merit

What if the admin provide bot to identify spam massages to erase immediately? For me that would be the best. Bot would not hesitate to do it if it is inputted in the system. No merit require.

Precisely. Even when I agree with the initial idea, I believe this can become a really easy way to earn merit by farming. Let me explain: for instance, I can create three new accounts. With two of them, I will be dedicated to creating spam, and with the one rested (or infinite number), I will report to the moderator my own spamming threads. It will be really easy to earn merits, for I can create any spam I want and any reports I want with many accounts. It will be farming, anyway. How to stop this? Well, your implementation can works if only members are allowed to report and earn merits. So you first need to become a member (10 merit points) before even having access to the "report moderator" button. Maybe it can maintain far those "reporting" farmers and maybe it will become a great system. Anyway, I'm am sure it can be broken as well. Maybe not newbies neither Jr. Member should be allowed to report, but we all know many members are products of farming activities. So, maybe, instead of giving bad trust, we need another button, the "report member", or "report merit activity". Even when it can have some holes, I think this is a good thing. Spam is growing like cancer, and by motivating people to search and hunt spammers can be a great desition, we must just design an efficient way to do so.

I don’t think successful reports should receive a merit for a single report. This is similar to you will not receive merit for every “good” post you write.
With the above being said, I think it might be appropriate for someone who is fairly active in reporting who is struggling to rank up due to a lack of merit to receive sufficient merit to rank up (maybe without the corresponding sMerit, or less than the normally expected amount) as a reward for helping reduce rule violations, which is ultimately what merit is trying to do.

How about we just stop being so desperate for merit points instead? I have no idea why everyone has some kind of boner to see green italics next to the top of their posts? I'm surprised that some of you who posted on this thread are advocating or this? You're all supposed to be seasoned posters who don't care about money.
MERITS WILL COME NATURALLY TO YOU PEOPLE. There is absolutely no point in rushing to get them. If you post regularly in a constructive way, sooner or later someone will send merits your way!
We don't need any more systems in place to get more merits! Just let it happen organically. I someone likes your post, you'll get a fkn merit. Does it mean you'll get a merit every 100 posts? Maybe not. Does it mean you'll get at least 10 merits for a 1000 good posts? Yes!
Stop rushing it people, geez. There's absolutely no reason or logic for wanting to get merits unless you're planning on spamming the forums with your signature ads or something ridiculous like that.
Just post, enjoy bitcointalk, and get merits when they happen. Geez.

Merit is suppose to highlight the good quality posters from the bad. Reporting posts isn't related to this. People reporting posts already get enough reward in that they are making the forum cleaner and I'm sure the moderators thank them from time to time. I mean if you want you could just go over to the stats that theymos presents now and again of the top reporters and send them merit on that.
I might be a weirdo but, there's something therapeutic about reporting posts and seeing them get dealt with. Then again I am a weirdo.

This won't work, because then you'll see teams of account farmers--half the team will be writing shitposts to get reported, and the other half will be reporting those posts. It probably would be an extremely easy way to game the system, plus it would have a negative effect on the forum overall. I think the system is just fine the way it is. Everyone here is impatient, but we're not quite 3 months into it yet. It's going to take some time to wear these spammers out. How about we just stop being so desperate for merit points instead?
Yep, there's that. But as long as spammers are incentivized by sig campaigns, it's not going to stop.

I'm afraid things like this will be spam spam or make yourself with a different account account in the hope of getting a reward. your plan is less effective

Easy to abuse since we can easy to create a newbie account. Reporting to the moderator is not effective to have merit, but if you are doing it right now it's better you are helping the forum clean and the moderators as well. As of now stop burdening your self regarding merit, forget it for a while instead do your best to post a genuine post that shareable to others idea or reply a post with a constructive and sharing idea. Then you will never know that your post is merited to the merit source.

Okay. Here is a conclusion that can be drawn from all the posts above. Cons 1. People work harder to spam and then report them at the same time to earn merits. 2. Someone said "we can award merit to top reporters" but in that case, spammers try their best to be in the top. Pros 1. Most pros ultimately lead to cons.
In that case, spammers try their best to be on the list by cleaning their own shit. This won't work, because then you'll see teams of account farmers--half the team will be writing shitposts to get reported, and the other half will be reporting those posts. It probably would be an extremely easy way to game the system, plus it would have a negative effect on the forum overall. I think the system is just fine the way it is. Yep, there's that. But as long as spammers are incentivized by sig campaigns, it's not going to stop. Yeah, that is highly possible and the result will be disastrous for the forum.
I agree with most of the thought that system can be easily cheated by the whole new concept. It will only lead to the wastage of resources and previous approach to stop spammers. I thought for a while that it will be good but after discussing the matter with all of you, it is clear that there will be more cons than pros. Thanks for participating.
