There may be some prominent altcoin, but of course Ethereum is the best among its competitors.
But of course our calculations will always be about profits, and I think many other altcoins with equivalent technology have a greater potential for profit.

Bitcoin is a nice idea, but it uses a ridiculous amount of electricity, it's slow as a cryptocurrency and transactions are expensive, On the other hand, there is new tech coming but it will probably take time to be implemented if it does. You have seen the problems with the forks for sure. Ethereum, on the other hand, runs on the same principles but is a generalization of bitcoin. It can be used as currency for sure, though with less merchant support, and it's much faster and cheaper.

It also can support contracts, from which you can build apps which have the immutability of a huge blockchain behind. It has an incredible community, most probably(imho) thanks to being younger and asic resistant. Its also moving to a PoS model which will stop the ridiculousness of the energy consumption. And don't forget tokens, they have opened the door to all kinds of projects. If you have to back one, you would surely pick ethereum, it is the second biggest crypto and the one with more potential behind. Bitcoin for sure might be a good investment for hodling but all the action is on ethereum.

you are right and I agree with what you say, ethereum is the best crypto coin after bitcoin.
and we need to know that there are so many projects out there using eth platforms.
