Vitalik Buterin is a smart guy and for a reason, he did not sell all his ETH back in December-January 2017.
I would expect some big news at the end of the year, when next hardfork is expected to happen and before hardfork of Bitcoin, Ethereum team wants to take a piece from that event.

There's no clear directions and only big players can make a huge impact and bring something into reality, ETH value can reach that amount if the development and acceptance of crypto payments will take place, the adoptions of this system being mostly used for payment process will begin to
uplift the entire industry, Bitcoin and ETH already have a good space online recognize as a crypto currency.
