I can agree with everything that you say regarding identification being easier and much more likely to be successfully achieved. But you can also appreciate that it is financially easier to contribute to the retrieval bounty because the task is its own payout - the lost doge is the bounty? This in itself can create a lot of attention for both bounties to be taken seriously. So, if you have written off your losses, you might as well make it part of the retrieval bounty. Just my 2 cents

This is not a loss count though, its a bounty for retrieval. The bounty is paid when the doge is retrieved, which provides strong incentives for the people that lost the doge(since they have little to lose by contributing) and the successful person or group that happens to be responsible for retrieval of the doge. There is a second bounty of 140k for the identity of Phonetic.

Yeah, I don't care. I had somewhere around 20k sitting in there when they disappeared. If someone retrieves it they can keep it. The losses from this pool aren't really significant for anyone that I've seen so far, even as a total it really isn't worth it for a criminal to risk. I don't get it. I suppose some people are desperate.

I will donate all 350k of my dogecoin in the pool, but I doubt we will ever get it back.

I had gotten a bit into bitcoin mining before it was big, then got distracted from it. By the time I tried getting back in, I couldn't use my home hardware at all for it. I pretty much gave up at that point. Dogecoin was something that got me interested in mining again, but seeing all my mined coins lost was very disheartening. I didn't even want to think about crypto currencies for the next few weeks, it just got me angy. Then I had an epiphany, I wasn't going to let this defeat me. I took the roughly $140 that my coins were worth and bought another video card for my setup. I'm not going to let this defeat me, I'm going to double down, damnit! Well worth it. Only had the card for less than a week but I'm already having fun with tooling and fine tuning it. I'm also back to browsing forums and sites and checking out the latest cryptocurrencies, though I do worry about those who were let down by this and have yet to restore their faith in mining!
