Instead of running an ico and giving out worthless tokens, what if an open sourced project ran completely on donations from the community. Would you donate if you believed in it and felt it was needed in the crypto space?
Even small donations like .00001 BTC or .01 ETH

most projects are profit oriented, so they run ICO to round up investor funds all investors are also profit oriented, otherwise they wouldn't be called 'investors'so we are all in this for some profits, not for some kind of charity project If the project is indeed a non-profit project, which I doubt it, then yes people might donate

what if an open sourced project ran completely on donations from the community You mean like Wikipedia? They collect millions of dollars through their fundraising rounds. I see no reason to limit fundraising to Bitcoin only though. Would you donate if you believed in it and felt it was needed in the crypto space? I don't "feel" the need for 99% of "developments" in crypto, the majority of "developments" is just money grabbing ICOs and forks nowadays. If only donating could make them disappear

Sometimes, faith will lead you to nowhere. Faith without a proof is considered to be sort of misleading. And when you talk about donating bitcoin to a project I believe in, it even will sound too fishy to me because I am a skeptical person. I do not even know if the company I am working at in real life is a scam or not because they still have not pay me yet. But if I am 100% sure that this project has real good intentions, then I will be glad to donate.

Thank you for all your replies! I wanted to start an open source network that is ran by the members using it. And i did not want to create one with a useless token and did not want to conduct an ICO since they are mostly scams.
I want to make a business model like Wikipedia solely ran by donations

If your idea is not revolutionary and provides a benefit to the actual community, you will not gain any support. Do not make profit your first destination and focus on not giving up. You've already taken the most critical step. [stay away from ICOs and worthless tokens] Good Luck.

The community is divided with this type of idea but I like that way of supporting a legit project that doesn't want to turn an ICO. But you are also going there and that is to make profit. I want to make a business model like Wikipedia solely ran by donations
As I've said you are going through that way of making money and if the people found your open source project helpful, it's a donation as a token of appreciation.

Depending on the project you are talking on if the community would find out that this would really be exceptional or completely different into other traditional projects then you might get some donations but it would really be only on slim chances yet people doesnt entrust easily someone on online world just proclaiming that they do have a good idea and would like to ask a donation. Even though those numbers are just small but still we are talking money on here.

Yes, I think people will donate to the projects that they believe in with goodwill. Especially if the project aims to bring something beneficial to the general public, more likely it will get support from the people.

As I've said you are going through that way of making money and if the people found your open source project helpful, it's a donation as a token of appreciation. For this project itself will not be about profits for me. It is an open source project where donations will be used to pay oracles, developers, and keep the project running. I was also thinking of having a voting system where members of the community can vote on how the funds should be spent.

I've donated to projects in the past and seen them die.
They need a real model, and donations is pretty weak.

There is definitely an opportunity for you to earn donations if you prove that the project will be advantageous to certain groups by showing a structured plan and intentions with realistic and achievable goals. Prove that your project will be successful and show true desire to work hard and the donations will start coming in. I believe in you, keep it up!

Looking at the recent developments and also understanding the meaning of donation. It means you are only giving out to the project or campaign without getting no percentage in return. Which is very good because it helps promotes a good cause rather than have so many worthless projects jumping on and off the grid. I tend to agree with your thoughts.

Is crowdfunding out of the question in cases like this?
Is it necessary that you receive funding in crypto? Doesn't seem necessary if you're not interested in tokens and ICOs.
