How useful is the block chain in Datacoin to store data?

What kinds of files can it store? How large of files can you upload?

Is it easy to upload/download them from the block chain, or does it take many steps?

I'm somewhat interested in this concept.

I +1 this. How do you go about putting data in the chain? Very intriguing..

You can do it yourself using command line tools, or register at this website and use the UI to upload any files you want to the blockchain (you pay in DTC for the upload):

https://krypte.net/

Downloading is easy.

Bidji, you gave excellent idea. It will be very helpful and symbolic to get such document into blockchain and announce info about it via different news portals.
And if you want something to have some sucess in europe just make a little mp3 with this "Ode to Joy" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ax9SOup0054  Wink

what do you think: should be books uploaded now, but split into chunks (as zip chunking), or should we wait until 'big file' functionality is finished?

You can compress them yourself.

At http://www.gutenberg.org you have thousands of free books in multiple formats.

I've already suggested a few books in this thread.

Compression example for Alice in Wonderland:

1. Downloaded as plain UTF-8 text from here:

http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/11

size: 164KB

2. Compressed using zip (strongest compression)

result: alice_in_wonderland.zip

size: 59KB

uploaded the file here: https://mega.co.nz/#!scRmSTQL!dQyGWwaitmOjyfpoSv_wLTXAjkZBKfL5ogTldF7Me1E
