Microsoft VP will become CEO of Github.  Is this a attack against open source or Microsoft embracing it and wanting to bring it into the mainstream?

Personally I think microsoft coders use it so much, like constantly, and Bill Gates doesn't want to feel like he is playing second fiddle.  Also they want Github to be able to be used for non open source projects in addition to open source projects, and they don't want another entity controlling their secret data.  So they decide to buy it so they will control the data.

Given that github is the platform of choice for hosting the vast majority of crypto projects this is a very troubling development.

I wonder if Microsoft will again use the embrace, extend, and extiniguish strategy on github.

I have read about it here, the comments are always best in thereg:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/06/04/microsoft_buys_github/

And here are a few self hosted alternatives that have come up in the discussions:

How can that be an attack to open source when Microsoft themselves lately contributing very heavily to open source(they even have a seat at Linux Foundation)? Currently, MS with new management, kicking ass for opponents and doing pretty good as a company.

Right now there are millions of private repos which are not open source, so what are you talking about?

Your third point is nonsense as well Git as technology is pretty decentralized, if they want control their secret data, they can host Git themselves.

With Microsoft management, Github should become even better place.

Its death. Everything that Microsoft will buy will soon die. There are lots of projects that are already  gone and not used by people after its being owned by MS. One that is massively used before Microsoft was skype and after they  bought it, almost everyone avoided it already. There were more alternatives coming out too. Github  will die and maybe another will come out and again MS will buy it.

Github certainely had a good reason to sell it for Microsoft, but say good bye to privacy.

Github reason is money. But don't you  think  there is something of a conspiracy  here?

There are lots of anon coins already  and if maybe government is involve then  MS is out to get the names of those dev team. Maybe CIA is going  to take the names of those people. This is not just to unmask traders but the anon teams creating anon coins like BCN, XMR and so on.

If you think that Microsoft is trying to control GIthub for cryptocurrencies, then you are delusional. Cryptocurrencies are not the only things on GitHub and probably not at all what Microsoft cares about when they bought Github.

The reason for the acquisition is almost definitely for business reasons. First of all, Microsoft is a huge user of GIthub with tons of repositories. There were probably some features that Microsoft wanted that Github was unable to implement. By acquiring Github, Microsoft can make those features happen themselves. Furthermore, GIthub itself probably would like to have more financial and infrastructure support. Both of those things Microsoft can provide by utilizing its own cloud services and the fact that Microsoft has a lot of money. Github is largely free to use but the infrastructure to support all of the services that they offered is most certainly not free.

Another thing to note is that Github has recently had issues with properly serving Pull Requests (sometimes they would fail to load). This may be indicative of infrastructure problems that they were having. With the Microsoft acquisition, those problems may go away as they will have more financial support and more infrastructure to use.

I honestly don't think that the acquisition is all the doom and gloom that everyone makes it out to be. I don't think that Microsoft acquired Github to kill it, that wouldn't make sense given their large usage of Github.

I remember when they did buy Minecraft and the studio behind, it was mainly for the potential value of the user base.

If you think Microsoft produces a lot of developing tools and platform, which now supports also non traditional Microsoft programming languages, like Visual Studio Code. I would not be surprised if they did this move to strengthen their position, by reaching out on thousands of developers. I don't think as well it may necessarily be a bad thing.

Ya I think the "progressive" side of Microsoft is coming out in recent years and instead of the "embrace, extend, extinguish" strategy they are more about improving their image with millennials.  Maybe this says less about Microsoft, and more about us as a force to be reckoned with  Cool.

This is really bad for the open source community...All the code that is on the github repository now is controlled by this 1 giant company --> Microsoft

One of the most important technological factor that sets the blockchain apart from other technologies is decentralization. If power is too concentrated within an entity, that particular entity can wreck havoc and cause collateral damage to the entire network. The same logic may apply to the github acquisition.

I'm not a fan of Microsoft at all. It seems that their plans as of late have been to transform their customers into their products by making everything free or cheap, but then spying on people as much as possible. That said, git is very decentralized by nature, and it doesn't matter too much what the repository is doing. It would be only a minor annoyance to move eg. the bitcoin repo to any of a number of different git repo sites. Roughly the same thing has already been done once, when SourceForge started going downhill. I don't think that any action is required until bad things actually start happening at github, though.

Their are so many mixed coments on the title but one thing is sure that if Microsoft buys GitHub, then sure their will be some big movement to be coming in Crytocurrency world and it may be bad or good or both also. It also not avoidable question that is their any government on the back of this merger so that they can control the coins and the developers from creating coins.

bad news
Bill Gates said more than once that Bitcoin is a scam and it is a bubble.
But now that Microsoft has made an acquisition of GitHub, it means that Microsoft also needs to understand blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies,
and then the code of the trading platform will not be cracked by Microsoft.

I can nor agree on that, look at the Skype they bought it and now it doesn't even work but they bought it because people know about it and use it everyday. Same for github the only disadvantage is if they ruin some existing features or play around with terms and policies to screw everything up. They might even play with github code base and make it slower. It's like they ruin everything but have the money to do so. Github is not the only platform if MS screw it up people are gonna move away from it.

Disagreed. The community now is very different than the community, when bitcoin was moved from SourceForge to Github. It was not a problem for Satoshi to implement a cap on blocksize. Imagine, if u want to do the same now.

It depends is it a full acquisition of the company or will some parts of the company is still controlled by the original owners? If it is the former than we might see some big changes in the company and I don't think we can say it is a bad one. Microsoft is pushing it to the limits when it comes to technology and now they want to focus on somewhere digital. The article also have said that they won't be making money out of the takeover not until 2020 so just by looking at that I think they are trying to do some more expenses in order to improve GitHub.
