I went for the thought that it was real pairs of socks...voted +4 as I hope that everyone has 4 pairs of socks or more.

I've recently gone through a wardrobe change of may socks, and have about 20 pairs of fancy/happy socks, which i'd say are pretty advanced in terms of colouring and style and needs to colour coordinate with my belt/tie/pocket square and shoes.  I've also got about 5 good pairs of workout socks, and a couple of pairs of ankle socks, and some liner socks specifically to boat shoes.
