A friend of mine in South Africa phoned me yesterday and informed me that another person died yesterday in a cash-in-transit heist. These robberies have increase significantly in the last couple of months. See link below :

https://businesstech.co.za/news/banking/246259/there-have-been-135-cash-in-transit-incidents-already-in-2018/

This got me thinking, Why do security guards and cops and sometimes even civilians have to die for other people's cash?

The current Fiat system increase the probability that people have to die, because cash have to be moved from one location to the next and merchants need to have cash on site for their business.

How many clerks working at merchant locations have to die for their owners cash? <7Eleven / Corner shop / Malls>

Bitcoin can reduce this today!

The adoption of Bitcoin remove the need for cash on location, so the robbers have no need to hurt or kill people to get to the cash. The bitcoins received can be deposited directly into a Bitcoin address at a safe location or at a third party payment processor and transferred electronically to your Bank, if you want to convert to fiat.

The employee or clerk working at your shop cannot steal your money or be in danger, because he or she does not have physical access to the money/bitcoins and this money does not need to be transported, so the security guards are not needed.

Let's increase Bitcoin adoption today, and save lives!

it is mostly digitalization though not just bitcoin. for example when we use our bank cards (debit cards?) instead of cash that is exactly what you mean and it has nothing to do with bitcoin. the problem is people still continue to use cash so it won't solve this unless it is a 100% removal of any usage of cash which is impossible. at least for many years.

Agreed, but adoption of Bitcoin will reduce "Cash" on your premises and this will reduce cash transports. If you were a robber and you had to chose a target between a merchant that are cash only and another merchant that has a "Bitcoin accepted here" sticker in the window, which one will you target?

The goal is to eventually get rid of cash, but for now, the reduction of the use of cash will be our first step towards a cashless financial system.  Wink

It is even more practical and safe for the consumer, because a stolen debit card & pin or credit card will destroy your Bank balance and even place you in a situation where your credit card balance is maxed out. When you use Bitcoin, you can deposit a small amount into your phone for the day and only that can be stolen, when a robber gets hold of your phone.  Cool

The rest of your bitcoins can be stored in cold storage or paper wallets in another safe location or hardware device.  Wink

Let's increase Bitcoin adoption today, and save lives!

Also more likely, I think, we will se cryptocurrency adoption in such African countries, because mostly people there do not trust in their banks, and national currencies, it is usually a huge inflation, cryptocurrency my become a solution.

In fact I think this problem will not be solved if what we change is the system turning the use of money into bitcoins. because if money does not exist anymore, then the criminals will hunt bitcoin. so in my opinion this is not a matter of money or bitcoin that became the main, but in because the bad people are still there.

In that happened it only says that carrying a large amount of fiat money is taking our life in danger situations which means it's not safe for the people specially to those people that working in bank institutions probably their life is not really safe for that job. That is advantage of bitcoin compare to fiat currencies. Bitcoin can be with us anywhere and anytime we go it doesn't matter how far and how long we're not in our home because nobody know that we have a big value of it unless in ourselves. So I can say that bitcoin can save our life in many different ways.

it's an interesting concept but, as mentioned, we've already got bank cards.
there's still need for physical money, I think. how would the entire population somehow know how to use digital currencies all of a sudden?
like all the old people and such.

I think it's not really a good comparison anyway. there's lots of jobs not involving handling money that still puts people at risk.
the concept is interesting but it feels like it's starting the solution in the wrong end  Cheesy

It's probably yes, it is truly save people's life in a way that we don't need to be scared because we have a big amount of it because no one can see it and know it and only we in ourself know that. It really give us secured and safety. Anywhere we go and anytime we go it's always free from the snatchers or holddaper or in any people that has a bad intension to us. However, in that situation, it's giving a cause that someday or in the near future that fiat money needs to have alternative currency that can secured people and avoiding them from danger even we handled a big amount.

Bad guys are everywhere we cannot please everyone to stop in doing bad because robbing is the only way the earn money. Those bad guys don't think in long term if they are old they can't work on that anymore but if you are working on a decent place or enviroment it will your investment for the success in the future. What will you tell to youre grandson or daugther you are a good robbery?. You are ashame to the familly if they will know what kind of work do you have. This also applies to the scammer out there.

I disagree. The current financial system encourage robberies of this kind. When your system create large cash reserves and a carrot for these criminals, then you are part of the problem.

We will never get rid of these criminals, but we can reduce the size of the carrot. The practical use cases that I mentioned, will reduce the risk and the losses.

Debit cards and credit cards are still a problem, because it gives these criminals access to your whole Bank balance or even money that you do not own. You can manage that risk better, if you only transfer small quantities of coins to "live" wallets, when you go to the shops.  Smiley

Correct. And criminals will just shift their focus to something else.
Back in the days, bank robberies or even train robberies were a thing. Nowadays, banks don't have cash, and barely get robbed. At least in my country, banks don't have bullet proof glass anymore, there's just nothing to get. Robbers shifted to gas stations, and now their employees have to hide behind bullet proof glass.
If cash is banned completely, they'll find something else to steal. Here, trucks are getting robbed now, usually when they're parked, but also while driving. Small electronic items are high value targets.
Or they can rob people at home: "your Bitcoin or your life".

I'd be fine with replacing cash by Bitcoin, but the current shift is from cash to electronic money. The main problem is that at least printing cash has some limitations, while (central) banks can create virtually infinite amounts of electronic money, robbing people through inflation instead of at gun point.

Lol...Funny dude (though this ain't funny). The title actually got my attention. You should remember that people will always fall prey. They that die transiting cash when they could've moved it online are low thinking individuals (I am just struggling to be mild with language here). We are in a cashless society and people should stick to digital means of moving cash. On the other hand, OP what makes you think that we don't have bitcoin heists? Haven't you heard of instances were hodlers have been traced to their homes and beaten up to give up their passwords and private keys? If you haven't, please google that for It's in the air.

The conclusion of your thread is better to use digital money than paper money. Seeing the incident, the risk of bigger banknotes compared to digital money and even the life of the stakes.
I as a bitcoin user, agree with your thread. if the life of the stakes is better to use digital money.

Well I don't think it's that simply. If fiat was only digital, or even if it didn't exist at all, and all we ad was crypto, people would simply find other ways to rob money. Hacking would probably increase, and yes, maybe no one would die from those attacks, at least not directly, but I don't think armed robberies would stop. For instance I think that it would be possible for criminals to simply kidnap rich people, and ask for their private keys in order to rob them from all their money. It actually had happen already, although at a small scale. So if crypto was all we had, we wouldn't be seeing crimes like the one you've shown, but we would probably see more kidnappings and even torture, to gain access to private keys.

Sad to know that there still people that doing anything even they hurting others just for the sake of money. In fact,  carrying a big amount of money is very dangerous to any people or persons that handled it and the more worst of it is that not only money that foolish people wanted to get what if even your life wanted them to have I mean those are worth people that never meant if they hurt others and the most important to them is money. So now I must say that bitcoin is really much better than to fiat money and possibly bitcoin can be much save people's lives.

BIG WINNER!

If you were a robber and you had to chose a target between a merchant that are cash only and another merchant that has a "Bitcoin accepted here" sticker in the window, which one will you target?

it is actually a much harder decision than you think. there is pros and cons in choosing either one! and you can rob both the same with a gun to the merchant's head forcing them to give you their funds.
- bitcoin is more valuable and it is much easier to transfer. the robber can send it out to his address which he has created before and is not carrying the keys. so when running away he doesn't have to carry anything. he goes in, robs, gets out. someone seeing him in the street right after the robbery wouldn't know he just robbed a lot of money!
- cash however is 100% anonymous. there is no way to find the robber if he gets away but he has to carry it out. if someone sees him in the street they will see him carrying a large bag filled with cash Cheesy

Source: https://xkcd.com/538/

People would still get robbed for their Bitcoins, People would just be threatened to either give up their private keys or to send money to the criminals.
Traders who did in-person trades via Localbitcoins have already been robbed.

Criminals will definitely find a way around getting to your coins.

With bitcoin the risk is much higher than that we make a cash transit. As each and every activity of a cryptocurrency Transaction depends on the internet the ease of hacking is high which makes it more risky than a cash transit that takes place with guards surrounding. However high we enable security at some point a small mistake leads to a drastic loss. It can be of human life or it xna be if the financial source that's been evaded.

Yes, that's correct.
Even digital money there is a risk of your life not only physical money because as what have said the statement above of my post criminals will definitely find a way around and seeing which better a good to rob. Well, physical money is a high chance of getting rob compared to digital money but it doesn't mean that in that way people adopt bitcoin, there's another alternative way not to hold your paper money. Debit card and ATM maybe one of their option.
