Agreed, Nobody did know until Satoshi emerged out of nowhere. In fact, nobody believed it was even possible. Satoshi proved it was.  This innovation was to achieve consensus without a central authority. Cryptocurrencies are digital gold. Sound money that is secure from political influence. I agree, since there is no one holding or controlling cryptocurrencies it is a good asset. We can do what we want with it depending on the person. Anyone can do this or invest in this and at the same time crypto currency is powerful for that reason.
