if i were a scammer, i'd probably do it on silkroad - it's way easier to prey on druggies looking for their next score. maybe not everyone on SR is like that, but i'm pretty sure there are lots of them. they make the most irrational decisions after all.
lol... there are a lot of bad people out there. Don't risk your life for the sake of a few coins. It is true that the Silk Road 2.0 is more vulnerable to scams, after admins removed the escrow system. Now they are using multi-sig wallets, which are more susceptible to cheating. i was just playing an "if" scenario.. i don't even think it's all that risky to scam someone on SR, but i still wouldn't do it. remember that guy who got away with the heist at sheep marketplace? i think he was doxed, and he is still alive (i think).

Bitcoin has just made it easier for someone to scam people globally, within seconds.
You have micro transactions, with nearly no fees. {So you can scam millions of people, with small amounts} or you can go big and scam someone out of a big amount, and have it, within minutes. {No charge back / refersal of transaction / No consumer protection / And relative anonymity, if you use mixers}
Previously, you had to wait for wire transfers to go through, and you had massive fees and transactions could be stopped...... BTC changed all of that.
It's a great currency, and it has huge potential, to use these same features for doing good things, but unfortunately not all technology are being used for doing good.
We have seen this with with all other technologies {Facebook / Twitter / Internet} So BTC is not unique, it still the same people using it. {Human factor} Greed.

As long as there are suckers, there will be scammers. Bitcoin makes life easier for scammers, but also for everyone else. You just have to be cautious about where you send your money.

Scammers will always be there. When business booms, there willl be scammers. Scammers date back from before Christ and maybe up until Mars becomes the new earth.

although bitcoin scamming is rampant. its not as high as FIAT scamming
lets start with TAX: once you add sales tax, income tax, local community(state/council) tax, car fuel, cigarettes, alcohol price inflation(tax). you will realise FIAT scamming is atleast 50% of what people earn and thats just where funds disappear to from public sector industry making excuses for why your account is lower then it should be and they know there is little to nothing you can do about it..
should i then talk about the credit card fee's, mortgage interest, bank charges, etc that the private sector scam from people.
should i then talk about the boiler room, nigerian prince, colder callers? or the pickpockets or ATM skimmers (card cloners).

I DO NOT TRADE OR ACT AS ESCROW ON THIS FORUM EVER. Please do your own research & respect what is written here as both opinion & information gleaned from experience. many people replying with insults but no on-topic content substance, automatically are 'facepalmed' and yawned at

although bitcoin scamming is rampant. its not as high as FIAT scamming
This is correct ^^ . Fiat rules the scamming arena. lets start with TAX: once you add sales tax, income tax, local community(state/council) tax, car fuel, cigarettes, alcohol price inflation(tax). you will realise FIAT scamming is atleast 50% of what people earn and thats just where funds disappear to from public sector industry making excuses for why your account is lower then it should be and they know there is little to nothing you can do about it.. And you support the point with real evidence. should i then talk about the credit card fee's, mortgage interest, bank charges, etc that the private sector scam from people.
should i then talk about the boiler room, nigerian prince, colder callers? or the pickpockets or ATM skimmers (card cloners).
Bottom line, FIAT wins for scammers vs. Bitcoins.

It's worth noting that the situation is MUCH better now than it was in 2011.
In 2011, people were creating companies and bitcoin "investment" vehicles right and left, and there were two big problems: 1) Very few understood proper bitcoin security 2) Many operators remained fairly anonymous, and no one had meaningful "rep", really; neither individuals nor companies.
So plenty of sites run by honest people were hacked, plus a number of sites were not run by honest people. But as time went by, people figured out cold/hot wallet best-practices, honest people built trust, and bitcoin users learned to pay close attention to security practices (our own, plus those of any business with which we interact) as well as those who operate the sites/businesses we deal with.
I'd say things got MUCH better toward the end of 2012.....but yeah, it sucked for a while.

Bitcoin is the first monetary system to credibly offer perfect information to all economic participants.

In an ideal world where free market capitalism is the way of life, scammers will always have an advantage over the economy unless there is also free speech, which would prevent scammers from successful business. Precaution is essential in the Bitcoin world.
