You can stake anywhere from 0.00000001 x42 upwards.
A good number to start would be 1000 x42, I say that not because of how much you will earn, but because it will enable you to host a tier one masternode come the end of the month.

Also check that you are using a current version. Latest is v0.1.16. But anything higher than v0.1.12 works.
