I know I'm going to step on some feet with this and I'm probably setting myself up for a medium-sized shitstorm in my direction, but I need to get my frustration out.
I came here because I thought I could get interesting info, have constructive disputes and generally read and talk about the progress and future of the cryptocurrency revolution. What I got: Scammers trying to dupe people. Liars and trolls spreading FUD, trying to profit off gullible people or just trying to cause havoc for fun. People hating on each other because they have different opinions, insults flying low and pitchforks seemingly always at the ready.
There also appear to be many nice people on here, but by swamping me with a big amount of insufferable posts the (hopefully false) first impression this board gave me and is bound to give anyone is this: Bitcoiners are a greedy, remorseless, partly psychopathic, immature, hateful mob. I am almost sure this is a false impression, but it's what it looks like! Seriously, I have never felt less sympathy for any forum, even users of 4chan and Newgrounds have better social behaviour... and with this kind of culture you want to run a revolution that is supposed to make the world a better place? I honestly fear for the outcome.
Maybe I'm just lurking the wrong subforums, or maybe I'm unlucky to find troll parties in every thread I click on. I hope it's something like that.
Please, someone restore my faith in this subculture!

To an extent, this is true for some of the members of this forum. Seriously, I have never felt less sympathy for any forum

I wouldn't go that far. On bitcointalk, trade is freely conducted amongst its members. It would be impossible for trade to be conducted on this forum *without* the small portion (allbeit 100x too big) portion of users that fit the description in your first impression. Especially in a place that revolves around "digital money" I wouldn't necessarily say that most of 4chan has any "social graces" at all. /b/ is the gutter, /pol/ is full of nazis, boards get spammed frequently. The good thing about bitcointalk is we have a handy-dandy "Ignore" button. Heaven only knows how many times I've clicked it

I wouldn't go that far. In any forum I like to follow the list of recent posts to see what's going on, and here, once you filter out the bazillion altcoins (not wanting to get into that atm), every second thread is, as I said, a troll party or similar. Okay, down in the internet gutter there's even more trolls, but.. I don't know, it's more ..predictable there? More fitting, maybe? When you go to the chans you know what to expect and somehow everyone more or less gets along - on a weird, disputable level, but they do. It's different. I don't really know how to explain better. When trolling takes place it's mostly creative and funny, people are doing it "for teh lulz" and for fucking with others' heads. Sure, content is often questionable, but as I said.. that's what you expect from the chans. Here it's just.. everyone for themselves and against the rest of the world! It just feels like a place full of people talking to themselves while trying to make a profit off others. Maybe I need to take a look at the specific sub-boards instead of trying to make sense of the "recent posts" stream, maybe there's more 'culture' in some of those.

I don't think you are very far from the mark.
This forum is absolutely full of invaluable information but it may be buried in a thread that is 3000 pages long. Good luck finding what you need. The search button does work but it would be nice if just reading a thread didn't take the effort of reading a novel. I have to admit, I have been part of the problem in the past, I am changing my ways.
The pitchforks are the ones that feel they were scammed or did get scammed. There is a lot of hate and mistrust here towards some vendors and individuals. Promises that were not fulfilled or at least were not understood correctly.
alt coins is full people trading and newbs getting shafted. Live and learn.
Hang around a while, I think it will grow on you.

If you avoid certain sections of the forum, you get a much better signal to noise ratio.

If you want to be more disillusioned, take a gander at the youtube videos for "bitcoin group" talks.
A quick snapshot of some of the folks who are most involved, and you quickly infer why they are so involved and support anonymous transactions so much. Some of them appear rather seedy, and it's so obvious why they want anonymous transactions.
There is so much more to crytocurrencies beyond attempts at anonymous money transfers. So many great features that we need...that train is impossible to stop now, but geez, having some of these folks standing out in public as as reps is just bad for bitcoins future.

This ^^ I've set my preferences to ignore the altcoin boards and it made all the difference in finding threads worthy of a response. As for: There also appear to be many nice people on here, but by swamping me with a big amount of insufferable posts the (hopefully false) first impression this board gave me and is bound to give anyone is this: Bitcoiners are a greedy, remorseless, partly psychopathic, immature, hateful mob. I'd say that generalization applies to any online discussion board where you're able to maintain an anonymous persona. Even so, it seems quite a bit worse now than I've seen in the past, though that's probably because Bitcoin has gained some popularity over the years.

In my experience, the only people to insult this community were the ones who were trying to do it harm.

You're unfortunately not wrong. I personally don't stray away from the Services and Meta subforums and haven't seen too many bad posts there. If I were to run this forum, I would probably moderate it in a stricter way, including prohibiting posts which look like they were written by someone with the maturity of a 10 year old kid.

The signature campaign posters adding useless redundant fluff to their posts to reach their minimum word count are lowering my IQ.

You are 100% correct. These forums are a joke. You can't even sell anything anymore because 99% of buyers are scamming. I think if the management want this forum to stop being a cesspool of disease and feaces they need to get peopl who will mark people as scammers and then ban them. Sure they can get around bans, but atleast they are gone. Its pathetic people can scam for 10's of thousands and the management do not step in. Is this really all under the guise of free speech ? When I joined in 2012 it was never like this. Its just slowly gotten worse because management has basically given up / doesnt give a crap as long as the ad revenue is rolling in. The scam accusations forum gets like 5-10 new people a day.. or probably the same people with differant names. Mike: What is this better place you speak of ? I know I'm going to step on some feet with this and I'm probably setting myself up for a medium-sized shitstorm in my direction, but I need to get my frustration out.

yeah I did the IRC thing. No offence, but I got sick of listening to how powerful some people think they are. They seem to think they run the world with there little pile of BTC. I do appreciate you mentioning it though, assuming you were serious.. Mike: What is this better place you speak of ?

Scammers trying to dupe people. Liars and trolls spreading FUD, trying to profit off gullible people or just trying to cause havoc for fun. People hating on each other because they have different opinions, insults flying low and pitchforks seemingly always at the ready. All these people you mentioned are on my ignore list, you'll find that these morons look like they're the majority of the forum because they're busy trying to spam people like you off the boards because that's how they roll and it's a common theme on any forum the only difference is that on here there are that many people it looks like there's just a wall of hate, feel free to add the following people to your ignore list so you will have a much more pleasant time on the forums.

When it comes to community sites, I refuse to join any that don't have a working block/ignore function simply because it's completely taken advantage of, much like how marketers and scammers take advantage of the fact that your home phone line doesn't have a block/ignore function as well. Included in the list are the following types, some of which you've mentioned: FUD Spreaders, racists/xenophobes, people who use personal attacks when they can't get you riled up any other way, scammers, spammers and all round in general fairly unpleasant people, funnily enough I think precisely because of the ignore function a lot of these people have given up posting now because their trolling doesn't really work.

I could turn off signatures, but then I wouldn't know for sure which posters are posting junk because they are getting paid to do it and which ones were posting junk because they don't know any better.
