The endless debate... Do you think Bitcoin is a security, a currency or a commodity? We came up with a few reasons why it could easily classify in any of those categories: https://cryptocoin.news/analysis/is-bitcoin-a-security-a-currency-or-a-commodity-2-18643/

What do you think it is?

I think bitcoin is a coin and bitcoin have a great future. And usually say that bitcoin is a currency.
And bitcoin is a commodity for all user.
But when you keep the bitcoin, that's mean keep password and hide it seriously and in situation bitcoin is a security.
It's my opinion, you have other please tell me?

Commodity.

It's already been explicitly excluded from the definition as security by the SEC which'll do me.

As a currency I just don't see how it's ever going to work en masse when it's deflationary. No one will spend it unless it's the only option available to them. It's conceivable it may see far more use as a currency in countries that have weak banking and local currencies and little to none in countries with healthier fiat currencies.

Even if Bitcoin reached 'full penetration' straightforward deflation versus what you're paid in makes it less attractive to spend if you can avoid it.

It can be said that bitcoin is more now a commodity and it is bought for resale in the future, and not for trading using as a currency.
Already at the moment there are crypto-currencies much better anonymity than bitcoin.

I think bitcoin will be "Commidity" especially for those investors, rather than they buy Gold or house and lot they buy bitcoin as a commodity because they believe that someday it's value will be great. Also this is a digital currency and this is easy to carry in life or in bussiness because your life will not be dangerous rather than Gold that your life would be dangerous because I think if the holdapers know that you have Gold , they eventually hurt you to get that gold.

In a world of consumerism, bitcoin has been used as a digital money to pay bills in the fastest and easiest way. Many countries who doesn't have a legal regulation of bitcoin is entering the market in the simplest way of paying bills the fastest and accessible way.  So it can be a commodity but not yet a currency.

What? How so? It is not being used to pay bills, and it is certainly not the fastest and easiest way. Almost no one accepts bitcoin for payment, and governments don't want to recognize it as a payment form because it would mean that their own one doesn't matter anymore. It's too slow, too awkward, too clumsy, and not easy enough to pay bills. If I want to pay my electric bill, I just sign into my bank account and enter the account number. Instant payment. Bitcoin takes several minutes and it's not linked to your account number.

It's a commodity. A store of value in limited supply.

Well ... everything is relative. Bitcoin is a relatively safe way of transactions. However, there are other much more anonymous crypto-currencies such as Monero or ZCash. Therefore, I would not recommend using bitcoin if you need the most anonymous crypto currency. It is better to pay attention to the above currencies, they have much more meaning and the main thing is anonymity

Maybe is a commodity wishing to become a currency? Cheesy

People are most likely keeping it as an investment right now rather than using to pay for things.

do you even understand what a commodity is ?!?
a commodity is a raw material used to create other materials
gold=jewellery/circuitry
beef= steak/burgers
oil= gasoline/plastic
wheat= bread/cereal

i know what your thinking (bitcoin is gold2.0) but thats based on analogies unrelated to commodity.gold
infact gold sits in 2 markets. commodity AND asset
bitcoins gold analogies are about its ASSET classification

as for currency. stop thinking currency as just fiat. currency can be anything..

bitcoin is actually an asset currency

Bitcoin is neither of those three... I mean yeah, its a great innovation but it is still an on-going experiment. As a currency, it is not faring well since most people tend to hold--that is not good for  currency as it is meant to be spent and circulated.

Bitcoin is the currency cum commodity which gives security for your investment. So this all thing comes together only with the name and product sake bitcoin. If you want to invest on crypto currencies this is the right time to make your first or ideal investment bro.

Please do not give damn to any fake news you are seeing about crypto currencies on news site and channel. Ignore everything and make the investment accordingly.

It's better to be a commodity.

Bitcoin doesn't fit other options but can be used as it. It can be used as a currency can be used as payment whenever it is possible to use. As a security as it is not editable and is a great way to secure investments once stable.

Personally, i treat bitcoin as a commodity given that it rarely achieves the tasks of a currency and seldom used as a security given its volatility. Moreso, people seem to appreciate bitcoin as something they can freely trade back and forth, hence the commodity aspect of the coin. However, at the end of the day, the end-user decides what will he/she treat his/her coins, though certain parameters would be given by his/her own government about cryptocurrency and that's for sure.

bitcoin is a commodity used in commerce. bitcoin is similar to gold and are items that have stimulated international commerce for years. historically, commodities have played an instrumental role in trade and it exhibits many of the common attributes of traditional commodities. i simply believe bitcoin is a great commodity

Bitcoin was initially created to be used as a digital currency but currently it is also being used as a commodity and this has increased the awareness of several people to the use of bitcoin to generate income for themselves.

Bitcoin was created as a currency and it remained as currency earlier but now it's now only a commodity. Its highly bought due to the high ROI it gives.

I consider bitcoin to be a commodity, because in every commodity it has a non-fixed selling value, depending on market demand. many people use bitcoin just to exchange money without using it for anything else, so I think more precisely bitcoin we consider trading commodities.

All of that is characteristics of bitcoin its security because every wallet of users will surely secured and safety if we choose a good quality wallets and have a strong password and currency because it is actually an asset currency because it created as currency and commodity especially to the investors they believe that someday it's value will be great and back to the old price that high and bitcoin can be used and it will help bitcoin to have value and anybody can use it.

The goal of Bitcoin is to be a currency, i.e. a medium of exchange. A commodity is a real (not virtual) thing that can be exchanged. In earlier times people traded things that scarce but had value. A fur trader hunted fox, rabbits, deer and etc. Then he would trade or sell the furs for the necessities of life. Gold is a commodity. It can, and often has been used as a medium of exchange.
Bitcoin is virtual…it exists only in computers, it does not exist as a physical, real thing.
Bitcoin is not, and cannot be a commodity.

In my opinion BITCOIN yes is a currency
If you hear them taking about currency note and digital currency that's how currency and digital has to differentiated by note which is tangible and digital which intangible..in simplicity it is a currency that you can't touch that's why its called digital currency because its untangible
I hope it helps you understand that its not commodity

The current can be seen bitcoin is almost commodity.  Because everyone buys and sells to make a profit for themselves.  In the future I hope the price will be stable and bitcoin will become accepted currency especially online payment.

Bitcoin is better to be a commodity. because for now Bitcoin doesn't match other options but can be used like that. This can be used as a currency that can be used as payment whenever possible to use. As a security because it cannot be edited and is a great way to secure investment while being stable.

What do you think it is?

Security, because for those who trusted bitcoin this is the future of technology and the assurance of our family and love ones because of the volatility profit will go high and high as time passes by so in long run we will be having bright tomorrow

Commodity, since this has been use for investment and holding, compared to Gold this has a big potential and fast earner profiteering.

Currency, this can be use for transactions via internet, just like in japan when the function of this cryptocurrency is like what that uses of Yen

So in totality, all of this are bitcoin functionality .

I partly agree with the classifications.
Ok it might be classed as a currency in that it is a payment system like visa
But with its own tokens.
While bitcoin is not physical it can be used as an investment like the stock exchange.
Security is a tricky one, the OP could mean something like a hedge fund against a
recession in FIAT land.

So in those 3 scenarios Bitcoin can and is all 3

Bitcoin was created by Satoshi as a payment system against banking system. But many tried to use it as a currency. But now, almost 95 Percent of users consider it as a high ROI giving commodity.

I think Bitcoin is the most proper currency. Now, people can buy almost things except from retail things by Bitcoin. Even in Thailand, people can visit here and pay costs by Bitcoin . Therefore, BItcoin is supposed to be a type of currency because governments also accept it.

It seems to me that at the present time bitcoin is the easiest to study and the safest type of currency, so I focus on the currency and its development in the future and in the present.

In my opinion, Bitcoin is entirely like commodity. Now, in the cryptocurrency market, investors buy Bitcoin as gold to reserve capital following the money- commodity- money system. Once the price of Bitcoin can be stable, I believe that Bitcoin will be used all of this advantages like commodity.

It's difficult for Bitcoin to be a security. Actually, Bitcoin is decentralized and under uncontrolled by the government. Besides, we all trade or mine Bitcoin in the Internet by the specially technological computers. Thus our assets can be easily stolen by hackers. Storing money by Bitcoin is not the good way.

Bitcoin can be either a currency or a commodity. In each context, Bitcoin will have different functions for investors to use. Now, many brands accept customers to buy something by Bitcoin, even devices. However, Bitcoin is also used like a commodity by investors in order to store money in long term. That's like gold. In brief, I hope Bitcoin can develop more in the future.

Already many analysts who do not even refer to the crypto market say that the big players are ready to enter the crypto currency market and the price should soar in December last December, but I think it's not very good, instead of the natural distribution of bitcoin around the world, there will be a concentration in the hands of sharks Wool Street, although who is already the owners of crypto assets will benefit

Yes, this is endless. Peoples have different point of view from their individuals. Some peoples says bitcoin is not an asset, it must be a currency.
Well, if you have your own opinion about bitcoin, just don't force any peoples to yours. Either bitcoin is a security or currency or commodity, as long it bring good to our financial system, then it doesn't matter.

Bitcoin is more now a commodity and is bought for resale in the future. On the other hand, currency is used for payment and trading. I believe it will take time for bitcoin to become currency.

Bitcoin is a new currency that fits the future. With the continually progressing technology, digital currency will help us cope with the community's demand. So it is a currency.

I think bitcoin covers those three things, bitcoin is security because the private key for bitcoin wallets is only we know, bitcoin is a currency because some countries accept bitcoin as payment and bitcoin as a commodity because many people buy bitcoin and sell it in the future.

i will go with bitcoin as commodity as most of investors will hold and wait for the rise of bitcoin price. Since the adoption of bitcoin has not really give impact to us due to volatility and people will not use bitcoin as payment.

bitcoin is still a currency even if people use it as a commodity and invest in it only. it is just that bitcoin is on the rout to adoption and that means a rising price and that makes it an investment for now.

Bitcoin is primarily a secure form of exchange of value of any goods. It's a single currency that can work anywhere on earth and can't be faked. And most importantly, it is not subject to inflation.

Bitcoin is what you want it to be. If you want to use it today to buy a Drone, then it will be a currency and tomorrow you want to trade with it, then you use it as a Security or a Commodity.  Wink Bitcoin is a very flexible technology, because it can be used for several different things, depending on the requirements and the circumstances.

The moment when we put it into a little box and define it as ONE thing, then we limit it's use case.  Tongue Let's also be flexible and use it as we see fit.  Cool

To be honest, I believe that Bitcoin is a currency which is different than the traditional form of currencies. However, as a majority, we are treating it as a security or investment option considering speculative gains. The core fundamentals of Bitcoin states that it is a payment system based on decentralization and hence we should treat it in that way instead of giving priority to the other things.

Bitcoin security element can not say anything. Reliable in the conditions of today, but future technology can make Bitcoin inadequate. Especially in terms of security.

Yes, a currency. Because, Bitcoin's mission is to use it as a means of payment.

Well, Bitcoin can be possibly any of them, but currently, it's a commodity mostly
because it's too volatile for a currency and doesn't represent a share of a company as a currency, SEC agrees

Bitcoin is a moderately safe method for exchanges. In any case, there are other substantially more mysterious digital forms of money, for example, Monero or ZCash. In this manner, I would not suggest utilizing bitcoin in the event that you require the most mysterious digital money. It is smarter to focus on the above monetary standards, they have significantly more importance and the primary concern is namelessness.

Maybe is a commodity wishing to become a currency? Cheesy

People are most likely keeping it as an investment right now rather than using to pay for things.
maybe you can say that right now in my country, investors may still be considered as commodities because crypto currencies have not been officially used to process legitimate transactions or payments.

Bitcoin at first was nothing, just needed a social push. Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency created to make anonymous transactions. From there you can interpret it as "safer" or not. Convenience ?, well, every time there are more cards to use them daily without problems.

for now the reality that bitcoin is only limited to commodities / assets that function to trade. people come to buy bitcoin for short-term profits, buy the lowest price and sell at the highest price. but if you want to be a bit idealistic, bitcoin should be more than just an asset or a commodity, bitcoin must have the value of another function which can later be categorized as a legitimate currency, used to buy various kinds of needs. obviously we are in the process of achieving that goal.

Bitcoin is a virtual currency that changes the way people think about currencies. It does not have the disadvantages of flat money. It was born to serve the needs of trading in a modern environment. Bitcoin's current difficulty is that it is not widely used around the world.

To me i believe bitcoin is a currency which can be used to pay for goods and services duo it not yet legalized by government as a local currency but it functional online, secondly bitcoin can also be classified as an asset because today we can all see that may people now buy bitcoin not just for payment purpose but for future storing. so with this can say bitcoin be a currency or an asset

Bitcoin is a virtual currency that changes the way people think about currencies. It does not have the disadvantages of flat money. It was born to serve the needs of trading in a modern environment. Bitcoin's current difficulty is that it is not widely used around the world.
I agree. The goal of bitcoin is to become a main currency but it cannot be realized today knowing the government is not yet open in legalizing it.With this present time, bitcoin is more on an investment that gives us security for a brighter future ahead only if it will be  properly managed.

I think there wont be a clearly answer for this question. It depends on your purpose. So, I think the best feature for Bitcoin is a kind of currency

I think that nowadays for most of us bitcoin is just a way that we could put our savings and wait some time for income that could come but in future there  are lots of chances that it will turn to be a currency for most of us.
In my opinion Bitcoin can be regarded as a currency and an investment commodity at the same time because people are using it to buy products and services and others just buy and hold it over a long period of time so that the value increases and they then cash out.

It's not exactly clear what you mean. The fact that it is a currency is obvious since you can buy anything for this thing. As for security, the question is not yet fully understood: on the one hand, it is safe, since bitcoin is a completely anonymous system, but on the other hand, there were many cases when hackers broke into exchanges and stole millions of dollars. So as far as it is safe, everyone decides for himself.

For me, bitcoin is a currency, but you can use the currency for trading in the market like trading forex.
The different thing is, cryptocurrency value is volatile and can causing much profit or loss when you trade it.

Sad thing is to be currency not much country that allow it as payment, but you right, bitcoin already can called all that thing because it is almost like fiat money, only need to be more adopted.

I think Bitcoin can not be considered as a currency nor security. It should be considered as a commodity.

Why commodity?
Bitcoin is smilar to Gold, which is also considered as a commodity. You buy Bitcoin because of its value in Fiat. You then can sell it for Fiat, depending on your requirement. Like Gold the Fiat value of Bitcoin is always changing, it is not stagnent.

In simple word Bitcoin can be bought and sold like Gold.

Yes, Historically if you check the price of Bitcoin from 2011 till 2017. The price of Bitcoin has always reached its all time high every year in November. I have no idea why it happens?.

You can read this article. It does gives you the reason why the price went up and then analyze yourself.

My answer is certainly in the bitcoin whitepaper or the purpose of satoshi nakamoto in making bitcoin, in fact bitcoin was created as a digital currency and the words contained currency not commodities.
People have known bitcoin as a currency not a commodity
Bitcoin is a digital currency that is projected as a means of payment globally by eliminating the role of third parties. When Bitcoin was first released and traded in 2009, the value was only $ 0.1 / 1 BTC. But now the bitcoin price reaches 6611USD in September 2018. Even in December 217 it almost reached 20,000 USD.

Indeed it is an endless discussion. Either as a currency or commodity, the fact is, there are many peoples using bitcoin for various thing.
It means bitcoin is not only a currency, but a trade-able currency or an asset as well. If you can use bitcoin for trading like commodity to gain profit, why not?

It's a currency that can be use as an asset as well that's why it's a good investment but then it would prevent the merchants as well to fully accept it because of the volatility wherein when they do not exchange it immediately, there is a risk that they would lose when the price goes down since the main currency that they are still using is fiat. When the time comes that they would be exclusively using cryptocurrency then there would be no risk of losing anymore.

It is just a sepculative asset to me. I've seen few altcoins that make the payment transaction better than bitcoin and we really just need to let it sink in to our minds. Some of them are completely feeless which is also perfect for microtransactions that is good for normal consumers  who goes to the market everyday.

For me, right now bitcoin is a hot commodity. It is not yet declared as a national currency in our country, it is like more of an investment, like gold that people buy it using fiat money and trade it to gain profits. It is very valuable that it is so very expensive.

Bitcoin is a commodity and currency, a commodity for investment and currency for payment of financial transactions. It depends on the way we see and use it, because bitcoin has the ability to do that even though now bitcoin tends to lean as a commodity for investment.

I think bitcoin is just a digital currency and bitcoin can be an alternative payment with long distance and with bitcoin it can also be used to transfer money between countries which is certainly cheaper and faster to arrive by using bitcoin all transactions can become better.

In my opinion. At present, bitcoin tends to be a commodity that can be traded digitally. at present, bitcoin is used more to seek profits from trading than to be used as a currency for transactions. and bitcoin is more widely used for futures investment commodities. and all of this will continue until bitcoin is legalized so that bitcoin will be used as a medium of exchange such as dollars, euros, pounds, rupiah etc.

I think bitcoin is a coin and bitcoin have a great future. And usually say that bitcoin is a currency.
And bitcoin is a commodity for all user.
But when you keep the bitcoin, that's mean keep password and hide it seriously and in situation bitcoin is a security.
It's my opinion, you have other please tell me?

everything can happen without anyone can know the development of cryptocurrencies accompanied by the development of technology and progress of the era of bitcoin will be developed because of the investors themselves

I believe that bitcoin is good as a long-term investment, a kind of means to store and increase their own money. Another very good use of bitcoin is to use it as a means of payment.

I think it's primarily a commodity, but unlike most commodities it's actually much purer because we can know exactly how much of it there is.

While being a commodity it's also a currency, because it has the properties of one.

I don't think it's a security.

Syscoin has the best of Bitcoin and Ethereum in one place, it's merge mined with Bitcoin so it is plugged into Bitcoin's ecosystem and takes full advantage of it's POW while rewarding Bitcoin miners with Syscoin

In my opinion, bitcoin is a kind of secure asset. It still can not replace fiat so I do not call it currency. Bitcoin in the future may be a currency because of its security and reliability, but not now.

I agree with folks that says it's a commodity. It is actually not practicable to use Bitcoin as a currency. The fees to be paid is quite discouraging.

Bitcoin is a limited-liability commodity, with Bitcoin gradually becoming a brand name, and its demand for it is increasing, leading to its escalating costs. In other words, the price of Bitcoin is determined by the level of demand for a rare commodity. Therefore, it is not possible to have an accurate estimate of Bitcoin if it is compared to traditional assets. , which is denoted by the currency as the USD.

But no one has yet decided how to classify bitcoin and other digital currencies. That's because they're not really currencies. They're not exactly securities, to be regulated like stocks and bonds. And they're not exactly commodities, since there's no physical product.

In my opinion Bitcoin means in :
- Security : bitcoins are easily stored on a USB hard drive rather than a full-sized safe in the house and easy to bait for bandits.
- Currency : bitcoin competition is like a payment system, so its value can be in the role as a currency.
- Goods : bitcoin is considered gold. Gold is still a favorite investment for many as the global economy is slowly declining.

Bitcoin is money, crypto-CURRENCY, it is entirely different from the FIAT currency, the official physical money used by the world but they are the same in terms of value, Bitcoin can be converted into fiat and fiat into Bitcoin, the only difference is Bitcoin is a virtual currency but it has the same value as money in terms of spending.

Bitcoin is a currency, there is no doubt about it. Its creators position it in this way, and therefore we must perceive it in this way. But now we are quite successfully using it as a very profitable investment.

I still think that bitcoin is a currency. But the circumstances were such that it is now much more profitable to use it as an investment. But I hope that the governments of different countries will take steps to adopt it as a currency.

Yes I do think bitcoin as an digital currency which can be freely traded regardless of borders and so I agree with your point of considering bircoim as money or exchange. But bitcoin needs More global exposure in order to be freely traded as crypto is still an alien word for many people out there.

Bitcoin has certain characteristics that are similar to typical commodities, such as gold. Some argue bitcoin is useful and holds inherent value, which could make it a commodity. It also trades on the futures market, like other commodities. However, others argue bitcoin’s only value is in the minds of its buyers, since the digital currency is merely a series of 1s and 0s.

Bitcoin is simply a digital currency but issue is some people invest in bitcoin as an asset such as gold and silver. As an asset, they sell for profit in times the owners deem it right to do so. In my personal opinion, bitcoin is a digital currency which can be used for almost all business transactions.

I think bitcoin best fit for a currency rather than security or commodity. As what Satoshi wrote on his whitepaper, Bitcoin is a digital currency that will serve as an alternate currency to fiat and brings online payment to the higher level.

The problem is that bitcoin holds aspects of the three, trying to categorize it on either would be focusing on different aspects that bitcoin as a whole holds, it has to be looked in a "bigger picture" kind of way, instead of trying to make it fit on these caregories. Remember that the concept of Security, Currency and Commodity as the "only" assets is a pretty old concept, bitcoin is not even 10 years old now! Maybe a new definition is in order Tongue

there are many explanations and evidence that bitcoin is a digital currency, and it functions the same as a national currency. it's just that bitcoin is used online.

I believe bitcoin should be treated as a global currency more than security and commodity. It should be a method of payment system and hopefully aim to be a global currency soon.Despite of some governments who were not open to legalize bitcoin, bitcoin still continue to grow as years goes by.

Bitcoin is more of a currency and a commodity. Not a security because it does not grant its investors the 100% assurance of returns. Anyway, Bitcoin was created primarily to serve the purpose of a currency, thus to facilitate payments online with fast transactions, low costs, and user control of transactions.

According to me , bitcoin is a currency as it is used as a consideration for the product you purchase. But in the current scenerio ,people are treating it as a commodity and are investing in it . As people invest in gold or silver similarly people are now investing in bitcoins. They buy btc when its price is less and sell it when its price rises. So in this way people are investing in btc and treating it as a commodity.

We can't call bitcoin a currency because it's not and I don't think it will ever be. Of course some people use it to pay pay for different services or things but that doesn't happen very often for bitcoin to be called a currency. For example people are never going to pay with bitcoin for their shopping if they have cash available, probably only if they have some bitcoin left and they want to spend it.
I dont think bitcoin is a security since many hacks have happened recently to big exchanges wich proves its not that hard to hack bitcoin wallets. The only option remaining is a commodity, wich bitcoin really is.

I think bitcoin combines all 3 of these qualities. In some online stores accept payment for goods in bitcoins which means that they can be as money, in this case, bitcoin is a currency. You can invest in bitcoin, sell and get money for it. In this case, bitcoin is a commodity. And security. You can be sure about your savings in bitcoins, since no one else controls them except you. Unlike money in a bank.

I think it's a mix of currency and digital resource.  Nowadays anything can be faked, from art to money, to even large quantities of gold can be doctored.  Something that cannot be faked is definitely a valuable resource, and can be used like money, but using the current market price.

Bitcoin difined as a currency, because it is now started to accept as a digital currency. But i think it can considered also as a commodity, because of the demmand in our market. Many brought it investor.

i think bitcoin is a combination of security, a currency and also a commodity. the idea behind the blockchain  technology is to have a degree of security in the ownership of a valid asset and also have the currency and can also be seen as a commodity. because of the degree importance the cryptocurrency has become it can not be said otherwise.

Despite the fact that bitcoin is now mainly perceived as a commodity and a means of earning, we should not forget that it is a currency. This is very important for its further development and implementation as a means of payment.

I agree with the view that bitcoins cannot be assigned to just one label of product, security or currency. It is a combination of all three. The unique bitcoin is that it is so different and so profitable from all sides.

For me, Bitcoin is very good for an investment so that we could earn lot of money for our direct spending. I cannot see it as a security and commodity due to volatility. Also not for a currency because i only use it for direct spending if really needed therefore Bitcoin is good for alternative investment to earn more fiat.

I think Bitcoin is the most proper currency. Now, people can buy almost things except from retail things by Bitcoin. Even in Thailand, people can visit here and pay costs by Bitcoin . Therefore, BItcoin is supposed to be a type of currency because governments also accept it.

Government policies related to bitcoin can vary from place to place. Bitcoin as a currency still has many denials in some countries. Its fluctuation that make bitcoin is hard to be accepted as currency. Here in my place, bitcoin is more dominant as commodity.

Bitcoin is the currency security as well as the commodity that depends on the use of the Bitcoin owner. If they store Bitcoin it will be secure and if they want to sell Bitcoin it will be a valuable commodity and in the future Bitcoin may become a popular currency that people known.

If I need to choose from this three roles, then today it is a commodity. I can't say it is a currency because of long time and high fees for transactions and volatility of the price. And also it is not security, because everyone can see the transactions.

It supposed to be a currency, but since the legality is not too clear and the volatility is very high, there are not too many stores ready to accept Bitcoin as currency, for now it could be more precise to say as a commodity, most the Bitcoin value come from trading value so it's more famous as commodity

For me it is a commodity. Commodity in a sense that you own a piece or the product not physically but virtually. Though, you can still sell it and do some trading with it and gain money from it. And with that it will help you on your daily expenses. I also believe that bitcoin is a  currency because it has value and you can convert it anytime you want just like the real money.

Depends on individual. For holders, it is an asset. For traders, it is an commodity and for those who use it for transfers it is a currency.

I think bitcoin is a currency, an investment but unfortunately, we cannot use bitcoin in our real life because bitcoin now is available on the internet. But there is a country that will allow us to use bitcoin to buy something in real life so we can spend the bitcoin to buy our daily needs. I think in the future, we can use bitcoin in our real life but we don't know when it's happening and it depends on each government because they need to make regulations for the cryptocurrency.

Since we don't have any much adoption for bitcoin to be use as currency. I think this will be consider as a digital commodity with bigger volume for the traders. Anyway bitcoin has it all, it can be a currency, commodity or a security. It depends how people use their bitcoin to get their profits.

Depending on the use of the cryptocurrency, Bitcoin can act as a currency, a security or as a commodity. ..lol
Bitcoin has been on the centre-stage of attention after providing people with a mind-boggling return that reached a value of around $20,000 from a humble $900 within a single year in 2017. However, many people still doubt Bitcoin as a true asset, and part of this doubt stems from the fact that Bitcoin has never been categorised as a specific financial instrument ever.

One of the most common doubts about Bitcoin people have is whether Bitcoin is a Currency, a Security or a Commodity? While answering the question is tricky, but as the popular commentary on Marketplace suggests, Bitcoin is all of what could be termed by people depending on how they use it.

Bitcoin is a Currency:
Although the word currency often reminds us of a good-smelling, fresh and psychologically green paper note, with changing times and requirements, many types of digital currencies that do have value but are usually not printed on paper have taken the digital landscape by storm.
Unlike common fiat currency, Bitcoin, however, does not have centralised governing authority, and to everyone’s pleasure, it is also not tied to any country or geography as fiat money usually are. The cryptocurrency is also not generated as and when required, but in fact, a complex mathematical cryptographic technique is required to unlock or ‘mine’ Bitcoin, the total units of which is limited to 21.5 million.
Like all other currencies we usually come across, Bitcoin can also be traded, exchanged and used to buy goods and services. The mechanism of Bitcoin transactions is purely digital in nature, and it is run via a technological ledger known as Blockchain. Therefore, in short, although not a physical currency, Bitcoin is an accepted form of digital currency that can act as an alternative to fiat money provided the transactions are done digitally.

Bitcoin is a Security:
Bitcoin is also a security because it is fungible, a negotiable financial tool that has a monetary value. Bitcoin can be used as a variant of stock, such as in case of ICOs; as a bond provided the governmental bodies accept it as legal, and as an option. Bitcoin does provide a sense of ownership of an asset of a financial promise that can be used to recover a financial value in future. Although, the SEC chairman recently said that Bitcoin is not a Security because it is not secured by a third party, the point to note is that, like stocks, it does provide a promise to pay in future according to the market value, and that is a kind of security for Bitcoin enthusiasts.
Although a bank or a third party do not back the security, it is accepted in the crypto community that the value of Bitcoin will remain available, transparent and exchangeable depending on the market position of the cryptocurrency based on demand.

Bitcoin is a Commodity:
What is a commodity actually? According to Investopedia, “a commodity is a basic good used in commerce that is interchangeable with other commodities of the same type.” Therefore, Bitcoin can be considered as a digital commodity because it is used in commerce in the Crypto-economy, and it is interchangeable with other digital and sometimes fiat currencies. Also, Bitcoin remains the same thing wherever it is mined, and therefore, it can be used as a commodity with the same properties and value anywhere on this earth.
The Idea is Basically in how Bitcoin is used.
While it is clear that Bitcoin can act as a currency, a security or a commodity, the real issue with the classification of the cryptocurrency is that its attributes are often prevalent during its use. Therefore, if Bitcoin is used or treated as a currency, it takes the form of a currency. This is applicable to other forms of financial classifications, such as security and commodity too.
Since the very core idea of Bitcoin when it was created was kept versatile so that it can be used as an asset class mentioned above, the cryptocurrency obtained features that resemble securities and commodities, apart from being a currency. It is just a matter of understanding that Bitcoin can have different attributes that define various financial classes that are usually built around different classifications for currencies, securities, and commodities in case of fiat money.
As the Marketplace commentary suggests, it is not the reason of transactions that makes Bitcoin a currency, commodity or a security, but in fact, it is the use of the cryptocurrency or the user that makes it a member of any defined financial classification. Although, some may doubt the real value of such a versatility that does not make it a true member of any specific financial class, it is a matter of great advantage for all users because it reduces the need for three different ideas, and sums up as a single entity that can serve as a currency, a security, and a commodity at the same time.

I think we cannot say that bitcoin is security because you are not secured in bitcoin like in other business bitcoin is very risky. But we can say that bitcoin is currency because we can use bitcoin to buy something that we can use in our daily life. And I think the most good description of bitcoin among the three is commodity. We are trade bitcoin to earn. And we exchange it from one product or services. But unlike in natural commodity,in using of bitcoin we will exchange or trade your products or service that you using online transaction so it we can say that bitcoin is a digital commodity.

Just like USD, a fiat currency, but peoples can use it for trading in forex market too.
For now, bitcoin market volume is not a good as stock market volume. Once bitcoin become global currency, it will have more volume i believe.

Bitcoin, as we already knew, is a method of payment or transfer of value that is independent of governmental authorities like central banks that traditionally control money supply and the availability of currency in the global market. I think bitcoin can be use as a currency, a commodity and an asset that rolled into one. Some commodities and even some manufactured products have served as currency like gold and silver. Gold and silver have been used as medium of exchange or currency in the past thousand years.

I think bitcoin is a currency, but it have not used globally yet. And bitcoin is not a security because holding it not make you earn any passive income.
But if you a holder of bitcoin, then you may consider bitcoin is an investment to hold for long term. Short term holding will not bring a good profit.

Yes it can be and all we know that bitcoin is made to be a currency but with the current state of how people use bitcoin, it might can't happen. Since the price is growing drastically, we perceive bitcoin as an asset and we less to spend it since we're hoping that sooner the price will grow more.

Perhaps I don't think it's a commodity when it comes in economic terms. Otherwise it's greater than asset than to be a currency, and that's the deal.

What do you think it is?

Well, I think it depends upon the user if he will perceive it as a security, currency or as a commodity. Upon reading the news article you have attached, it states that most Bitcoin enthusiast, perceived Bitcoin in terms of security which I do understand why that makes me think I belong to that perspective but upon reading the article Bitcoin as a currency which is a perception of SEC, I found it reasonable that indeed we treat it as a currency which is obviously why we call it as a crypto currency right? The last is commodity which is also right, so no matter what you perceive Bitcoin is right. No wrong perception because all depends on how you see and treat it and it must not be a case of debate for a long term since we have made it to have a different registry that is basically based on how different groups of people sees it and categorized it.

Bitcoin is a coin and bitcoin has a bright future. Bitcoin can be called a currency. Bitcoin can also be called a commodity for everyone.
.

Bitcoin is preferred by its users because of its security and unmanaged nature.
How can you control the offense? With me. Bitcoin is really good. But to be applied and recognized by governments, it must be controlled.
When its value changes continuously and has a very large amplitude. Do you think you have a BTC when you own and the price is $ 6500 but when the sale has just shot up to $ 9000. Then how disappointment will be. Hence it is only considered speculative in the short term. Also called goods? I do not think it will become public goods.
So what do you think? Let me know your opinion on this and about my thoughts

Bitcoin was initially created to be used as a digital currency but now it is currently being used as a commodity and this has been increased.
The awareness of several people to the use of bitcoin is to generate income for themselves.

I like to think it as an instrument for financial transaction across the border, quite easily, fast and with fewer fees. You can term it as a commodity as well, but as there is no physical form of it like Gold, the demand for it remains dependent on the use of the coin/currency.
If the usage as currency comes to a stop, I believe there will be a great fall in value. Holding it also increases price somehow, but as it's a currency, holding along with usage will and does makes a positive effect.

I think it is an asset/commodity like gold. Also a currency like gold but not a security at all. There is not a single thing shows that bitcoin is a security.

I don't know in what sense did you mean that Bitcoin is security. Security like additional income to regular income or security in sense of secure blockchain technology and network.
Anyway, I don't think that Bitcoin can be defined uniquely because it has so many different characteristics that could be combined depending on use and purpose.
From my point of view Bitcoin is currency, asset and commodity all in one.

In my opinion, many people today use it as a means of storing value rather than currency, as it is a relatively secure storage medium a it is not affected by other factor such as inflation

I agree with the view that bitcoins cannot be assigned to just one label of product, security or currency. It is a combination of all three. The unique bitcoin is that it is so different and so profitable from all sides.

Bitcoin is a currency. It has all the characteristics of a currency, the most basic being that it is used to pay for something. Commodities are not used that way.In my view the value of bitcoin is based on its ability to do easy and highly secure money transfers and payments, particularly across borders. On top of that, speculators predict its monetary value by estimating its use in the future, in a couple of years, and they seem to come up with a factor of 50, meaning that 50 times as many bitcoins are currently hoarded by investors in the expectation that their use as money will increase 50-fold.
It is possible that part of this figure of 50 is caused not just by expected future use as money, but by governments driving people into bitcoin by debasing their own currencies. It is debatable whether that is something different from expected future use or the same.

Prior to fiat currencies, the dominant currency was often the most useful, and therefore the most universally desirable, and therefore the most universally accepted commodity. There is zero need to decide whether Bitcoin is a currency, commodity, or store of value. It's clearly all of these.
Governments and regulators will no-doubt decide otherwise -- I'm simply speaking technical truth.
