that doesn't seem to be the reason. until now ethereum is still the most popular Smartcontac Platform and many ico projects are still using the ETH platform.
I think eth prices like this are most likely because the price of bitcoin is still recovering.

Right now I would rather suggest to buy either Bitcoin or Ripple, the former because it was pioneer and still has strong supporting despite a bad year, the latter because it has potentially very strong support in Japan, in the banking system.
