Nay. To keep making the forum stricter is a good idea.
Yep. The next logical step to take would be to only allow Sr. Members and above to participate in signature campaigns, and there have already been some campaigns by reputable managers who've started doing this already. Jr. Members would still be allowed to spam social media for their bounties, but that wouldn't add to the spam on bitcointalk--or at least it'd be contained in the altcoin bounty section where it belongs. We'll see how this all works out. Theymos is slow to make changes, and he's being prudent by being that way.

The next logical step to take would be to only allow Sr. Members and above to participate in signature campaigns I've seen a few members with lower ranks that I'd instantly accept into a campaign. What you're suggesting would also restrict the (few) good users, and I don't think theymos will do that. I think it's safe to say almost all low ranking users who earned 35 Merit make much better posts than Sr. Members and up who barely earned any Merit. And that's why I require earned * Merit on top of rank if I get to run a signature campaign. We'll see how this all works out. Theymos is slow to make changes, and he's being prudent by being that way. At least there's a 1 Merit (or Copper Member) minimum now to join a signature campaign. It's a start *I check if it's earned or traded.

Weekly update. Another 483 newbies received at least 1 merit this week. The currently red tagged member MalReynolds sent 95 merits to Newbies.

I agree with you. There are so many high ranked members who didn't earn any merit. In my opinion, this is abnormal if a user has not made a useful post worthy of giving merits for 9 months.

TOP-200 on the first page has been updated. 331 meritless users received at least 1 merit this week. The total number of supported newbies has reached 3168. It seems that the quantity of newbies receiving merits is decreasing each week.

I don’t think I’ve sent a single Merit to a Newbie, that’s quite sad. Maybe I need to stop being prejudiced against them & start looking a little deeper into Newbie’s posts & find some worthy of Meriting. I had two skims through the lost of 200 & couldn’t see my name any way.

TOP-200 on the first page has been updated. I'm glad you're updating it, because I like this thread. What I'd like even better is if I was higher on the list, but it's been so damn difficult to find newbies worth meriting--or even a lot of members of ranks below Sr. Member. Maybe I need to stop being prejudiced against them & start looking a little deeper into Newbie’s posts & find some worthy of Meriting.
Sounds like a good idea. The problem is that most of the time when you look at the average Newbie's post history, it's full of garbage posts with nothing even close to being merit-worthy. I try my best not to be prejudiced against low-ranked members, but it's hard because I've come to expect most of them to be typical bounty spammers, which is true in most cases. But I have no problem whatsoever giving merits to Newbies, Jr. Members, or anyone else as long as the post is well-written and interesting. On the other hand, when I see a post made by a newbie in Meta that has anything to do with merits or suggestions about improving the forum, I instantly assume they're just trying to earn merit. That particular prejudice is justified, IMO.

My post on the first page has been updated again. I also published monthly statistics for September 2018. The new 317 newbies have become Jr. Members this week. In my opinion, FinFx looks suspicious.

I am also glad that a trusted member like you here in the community still finds time to hunt merit worthy post hidden by big piles of dump. I know that you have other things to do in the forum but I am surprised that you are in the top 20 merit senders of all time, it shows that you are also contributing in the forum in other ways and it is really helping a lot of newbies who have received merits from you, as from what I see it is one of their motivators on their attempts on creating good quality post

It’s a (mostly) thankless job, but I’m glad to help new users feel appreciated and improve their bitcointalk experience. Actually, that's very true. Hard to find really quality posts from newbies. Need to spend time reading different sections just to find one. I for one, didn't ask to be a merit source but I'm also grateful to be a part of it. One way to give back to the forum is to have this "thankless" job. We learn a lot about crypto, in all of its facets, as well as improving the forum.

There is the huge problem of copy-pasting on the forum therefore many users spend their time by checking newbies messages to not give merit to lazy spammers. For example, there is a copied message below that accidentally received merit from OgNasty. Humankind thrives on conflict. Without it we would stagnate and die. Take for example our history. It can be argued that every significant achievement arose out of conflict in some form. Early man had to fight for his survival. In response to this he developed tools to aid him. In modern times our most significant achievements - space travel and nuclear weapons for example - have come from superpower competition. As much as we all claim hate the death and destruction of war, we need it. That is one of the primary factors in evolution; survival of the fittest. Without conflict to drive us, without a need to compete, the human species would stop.

there is and always will be a huge issue of copy and paste and the fine line of quoting . but i also know that unless there is a superhuman knowledge if by chance there is a copy and paste copy of an article it could very simply be unknown to the merit source and could receive merit on one or the other of the copies. i dont feel you can point a finger at anyone for offering in good faith some merit if the post does in-fact deserve it. now copy and paste is hard to find ,but people as yourself that find these rule infractions do help point out some of the issues and you could simply report this to the board moderators and they will take care of it. but to point out to a merit source and not inform him directly either by pm or other means is not justified! unless the person giving merit has read every single thread and each post and has foto-graphic memory this will happen . so to help this forum when there is a copy and paste... please inform the moderator of that thread. To find a copy-paste, you don't need to have superhuman abilities, just use search engine adequately. but to point out to a merit source and not inform him directly either by pm or other means is not justified!
I prefer to talk about the problem openly to reduce the possibility that other people will be doing the same mistakes.

Rather than criticize those doing a largely thankless job, report the post to those being paid to handle the issue so it can be removed and the user banned. We are all needed to keep this forum clean.

It's mostly appreciated by majority of newbies, just that some if us don't have smerits to hive back and would not like to spam your inbox or the thread with thank notes. I agree. I am trying to do the searches when I suspect a post. However, many of the more crafty ones are spinning the texts, so a google search doesn't always get a hit. It's been a learning curve.
The fear of certain ban when caught should dissuade anyone from copying or even spinning, and with the increase in banned accounts if like to think majority of defaulters gets caught. That's progress.

That's progress. I hope so. However, it appears that we may be just playing a game of whack-a-mole. One account gets banned and the account farmer/bounty hunter just turns around and creates more. Also, I suspect that the more sophisticated farmers and hunters will just create better spinning bots.
