The main table and chart on the front page of this thread have been updated as of February 3, 2023. Since September 17, 2018, 5079 members sent at least 1 merit to 21671 newcomers. I have also published the four monthly statistics. xandry is the leader of this TOP-200 in October 2022. mole0815 took first place in November 2022. GazetaBitcoin is number one in December 2022 and January 2023. It should also be noted that mole0815 is now at the top of the main list, Ratimov is rated second, LoyceV is in third position. Thanks for the newbie support!
Sometimes I look at a post, and I think to myself.. This post is so damned stupid and incoherent, but the person seems to be genuinely posting from his/her own experiences and seems to be a real person.. So at that point, I might start to consider that I am using a "this is a real person" standard who is trying.. .. and whether s/he is trying to learn from others, learn from oneself or just trying to communicate an idea (but not very well), gives me some sense that there is hope that his person might be capable of getting better at posting.. and that might be enough to get me to send an smerit - again depending on my mood.. because if I read a bunch of similar posts, then I might lose my patience, and therefore the posts that I read earlier in my session got lucky to receive some smerits and the ones who I read later, I had no more patience, so there is a kind of luck that might sometimes be involved.
From what I understand, sometimes you appreciate even the little effort that a newcomer who really wants to learn about Bitcoin puts in his/her post. It looks like you have an interesting, unusual and unstandardizable style of meriting lucky newbies. It's nice.

Being a merit source is a difficult task, but being a merit source with a special inclination toward newbies is a very peculiar niche. You get the full array of personalities there, and it's not always easy to pick honest posters from the other categories. I tip my hat to those who occupy the first positions in these charts because of the gargantuan task they've committed.

Exactly spending your merits to help newbies is difficult task if compared to handing out merits to the high rank members as we know about them or their posts are good and inclined with our thoughts so we give them merits. But for newbies we had to find out who are making good and constructive posts or say useful discussions made by them which are merit worthy so really appreciate the top -10 in this category. But if we see there are some newbies who are making good posts and when we come across them we can see their post history to see if there are any other as well good posts to merits. But with your other thread you are helping them in good manner.

There can be a bit of a gamble with newbies, and even some of the members who have not been in the forum very long and have not developed a long post history (who might not technically be considered newbies), so sometimes they might not have a long post history to reference, but sometimes some of their earlier posts might not be very good.. however, merits sometimes might encourage them to improve their post quality and to participate in more interactive and meaningful ways. Of course, some members are not genuine, so surely some of us will make mistakes when we are sending merits to some of the newbies, so there might be a bit of a gambling component in considering the extent to which some members are going to be trying to improve the quality of their participation in the forum... , and on a personal level, I don't consider myself to consciously be going out of my way to send merits to newbies, but surely, there is some incidental increases in my sending merits to newbies when I go through the whole content of a new thread.. and then just try to identify some of the posts that i consider to have had been good in that thread, so maybe in some sense, I am consciously going out of my way to send merits to newbies merely by deciding to spend some time to go through the contents of a whole thread... at least, if the thread is not too long.. sometimes if the thread is "starting to feel long," then I have to abandon my attempt to go through the whole thread because it is causing me too much stress to read the contents of the posts (like if I lose interest in the subject matter of the thread.. so nothing really meant to be personal in terms of my stopping reading and stopping sending merits within such new thread that I had been going through).

I'm always happy if I could find worthy newbies to merit their posts. So, once in a while I make the list here and I'm elated when that happens. I've a mechanism for screening out the unscrupulous ones. By that I meant those ones I consider to be alts who are merely fishing for merit without putting in the work.

I've updated the list and chart on the first page of this thread to reflect the new data as of June 9, 2023. So far, since September 17, 2018, 5146 members have sent at least 1 merit to 22367 newbies. I have also published statistics for the last four months. GazetaBitcoin is the leader of this TOP-200 in February 2023. NotATether is number one in March 2023. o_e_l_e_o took the top position in April 2023. JayJuanGee is rated first in May 2023. Thanks for support!
Of course, some members are not genuine, so surely some of us will make mistakes when we are sending merits to some of the newbies, so there might be a bit of a gambling component in considering the extent to which some members are going to be trying to improve the quality of their participation in the forum... I assume you are talking about alternate accounts. Yes, it's quite difficult to distinguish between a newcomer eager to learn about Bitcoin and a "newbie" who is actually an experienced member but still has a short posting history.

OP, thanks once again for updating this list (and I'm glad I caught it in my feed before it got buried).
Wow....I used to actually have a rank each month, but I've dropped off completely since I started pretty much exclusively handing out merits to people who request post history reviews. I'm not sure if that's a case of me not reading as much, or being lazy or what but it isn't good. My goal with the offer I made to the community was to help members rank up, but I rarely get members at Newbie rank PMing me.
Is it too late to make a new years resolution? Yes, and I'd probably break it immediately if I were so foolish enough to make one.

(or plagerism), they seem to be good posts (well written) but then the post (or moreso the member) ends up having issues in regards to a lack of genuineness... and maybe even a lack of a brain that thinks for itself beyond stealing the work of others or posting the language that was mostly (if not completely) drafted by a bot.. Sometimes it can be frustrating if some of us get the sense that we have been duped.. and we might ONLY have so much time that we can try to figure out if the member is seeming to be up to no good.. in terms of actually not even intended (or perhaps not even capable) of making a meaningful and substantive forum contribution.

There is no perfect rule, no perfect system and no perfect justice, just do your own and leave the rest. I'm always glad when I see the updates from @Coin-1 mentioning my name as helping some newbies with between 1-3 merits within months if am correct. It would have been more but I don't give attention to them only because I'm not a merit source. But many of them deserve it, especially in a forum where disparities and biases linger. If you think too much of an account being an alt, I can assure you that you will do more evil than good, many genuine and original posters must have been discouraged because of this and left. While you make the forum thrive for alts simply because they with the alts must have understood the forum better, and whether you give them or not, they get it elsewhere. Is that justice? Take me as an example, I am no alt, but I would have left the forum in the first 5 months if not for @The Sceptical Chymist, his support encouraged me. @JayJuanGee is another good and random reviewer who I wouldn't have known if not for the merits he sends to me. How many people do this? My discouragement at that time is about the lack of appreciation of what I contribute, it goes a long way. Mind you, Injustice is everywhere in the forum, and if you look at some local boards, you would be amazed about what is happening there. Some underserving accounts could get as much as over 300 merits in a single month, all local. This is simply because they can speak their language, many might have alts there and continue to build it for money, is that justice? I implore anyone God has given the grace and privilege to hold a position of power to help regardless of discouragement by anyone, JUST BE YOU. It's not so difficult to read posts insightfully and psychologically to know who deserves merit and some suspected alts. That's at least for me.

You make quite a few good points, and probably I agree with your overall conclusion regarding various difficult balances that may well not even lead to any kind of system that is even close to perfect, because even if theymos might make some kind of change in regards to the number of merit sources and merits, but then some of the merits might end up getting spent in ways that really had not been what was intended buy the change(s).... and so frequently, I mention that theymos might want to do some juggling of the merit source members, and he does do that from time to time (but pretty infrequently), and maybe part of the reason that he does not juggle too frequently is that it may well take quite a long time to figure out the various kinds of fall outs that might occur each time the juggling might have had been in a kind of BIG way... Merit czars had been suggested too.. and sure that sounds good in theory.. but likely would have quite a few negative aspects too.. even though i would imagine that theymos does have some names of members that he would calculate to be less likely towards corruption as compared to others.. but everyone likely has some flaws in regards to sometimes even having time to carry out such duties... or even the right kinds of skills and access to administrative tools.. which there might be some difficulties in terms of giving some of that kind of access to administrative tools too.

I don't understand why would someone leave this forum if that person was unable to rank up unless the person's intention from the very beginning was to post in Ivory Tower board. By the way, I agree with you, a lot of undeserving accounts get a lot of merits because of their local boards but as I understand, these people are usually from poor countries like Nigeria, Africa, India, Pakistan and they help each-other in local boards. I understand this, they try to help each-other to rank-up and earn some money via signature campaigns.
Merit Kings? i.e. merit sources? I think that current merit system is good enough for this forum. It has it's pros and cons, like, the abuse from local boards but a lot more problems can appear if only limited number of people will be able to give away merits. We can also implement something like merit moderation or merit approval by other members, i.e. the case where one gives away merit and it needs confirmation of 6/10 to be finally given. But that's a lot of headache and waste of time for many people. I think we should live this system the way it is right now.

I stopped the last few months myself. I got tired of finding out a lot were just looking for merits and fake accounts trying to hustle signature money.
The majority of users who caused my appearance in these tables in some rare months unfortunately left the forum not even trying to get higher ranks. Well, it is disappointing a bit, but I think that it is a right way of spending smerits anyway. If I see a good newbie with interesting ideas, desire to study something new or even good questions it is good to share a merit with him. And what will happen next matters not so much. Of course we can hope that it will help someone we will be proud to found such gem among the first ones. But even if it will be just one such a gem for all forum life may be it is enough not to be disappointed with that others didn't become what we expected? Of course many of our efforts will be wasted, but I try to stay optimistic anyway!
