Hi everyone,
I just bought a collectible here. To preserve my privacy, I'd prefer not to give my real name and have the package delivered to a UPS Store or Post Office under a pseudonym. Has anyone done that before? My local UPS Store says they want a real name on the package so I can show ID for it, but maybe there's a way around that?
Thanks

Every time a block is mined, a certain amount of BTC (called the
subsidy) is created out of thin air and given to the miner. The
subsidy halves every four years and will reach 0 in about 130 years.

I've mailed something to a very well-known, very well-respected member here who did not offer to give me his name. On the shipping box, I just wrote his bitcointalk username along with the rest of the information--and he received the package just fine. Are you averse to providing your address to someone here? Can you have it delivered to a friend? I'm assuming you're in the US, of course. If you're not, I don't know how any other country's postal service works. And I understand wanting to be anonymous, but sometimes it's not completely possible and you have to make compromises. Edit: I use a P.O. BOX and i have added a name similar to my forum name. So in other words I can use my real name AND a forum name for the same box. And i do not need to show ID.
Really? I had a P.O. box once when I lived in a rooming house where the mail for the residents was delivered all together, usually in a big pile, and I didn't trust that my mail wouldn't get stolen. That was about 16 years ago, but I think I recall having to show some ID at the post office. I could be mistaken, though. In any case, P.O. boxes are a great idea if you value the security of your mail. I wasn't aware of the anonymity factor. That's damn cool, too.

It’s a double edged sword..... one side you use a different name, but must give a valid address. On the other side, you get a PO Box and have to give your real name. Find a friend or have it sent to minerjones to reship to you. He’s about as trusted as they come. Good luck.

Yes...you fill out a form and sign for any name you want it to be. It works like a charm. Was not aware of it until a couple months ago.

Only drawback is that certain service providers do not deliver to PO Boxes. I know FedEx do not
Very true and neither does DHL. I once had a person send me a package via DHL to my P.O. box ( even though I told them to send via snail mail) and once I realized that I called DHL and had them ship it to my home address. I am not sure if that can be done with FedEx though.

I think different post offices have different services. I can see all my current service in "Managing my PO box" on the usps online site. Cheers

I think one good way around this (in addition to other suggestions) is to develop a relationship with your UPS store (or another mailbox service provider) and say, hey I'm so and so and I do business as "X and X Company". Then you can get a physical street address that is not a PO box, does not require your name, and has 24 hour access (if you decide to go with a subscription to one of their box services). Some of them will do this on demand for $5/package, or they will gladly rent you a box. Unlike the PO, you can always call them and get quick service. They will re-route packages, etc.

I have been planing to do that myself. I'm thinking of sending the package to the security personnel in our village and let him claim the package but I doubt he'd also agree. Because he might find me a suspicious guy to deal with being not sent to me makes him think about I'm dealing something illegal. To avoid such, the very best option I can do is just buy the product in cash to a physical store.

The one thing I also found annoying is when sending a FedEx package I have to present my drivers license...apparently this is a new thing they implemented since they had issues with people mailing illegal items or dangerous items. SO when I send to someone requesting FedEx I cannot place my PO box and username as the sender..they actually take my ID and type in what is on it as the sender.

I only use USPS since its my favorite branch of government, and they are the only ones who give a damn if your package goes missing. I have things delivered to people all of the time using names that aren't their's. I've sent packages to about 50 different Chiefs, various animals, and a few very smart babies. The only time that you need to show ID via USPS is if you elect to pick up the package from the post office rather than having it delivered. Maybe with registered mail as well, but first class/priority put whatever name you'd like.

Possible exception: If packages are sent "Restricted Delivery", they require ID as it must be only delivered to the person on the package. (I had to show my ID to the local postman once when smoothie sent me coins).

To be honest... For high valued items..i pick personally..no matter where they are. Would not trust ANY carrier. For medium valued items..especially overseas..I use Fedex next day. For all others registered USPS. But I do have to say...the tracking sucks big time..i have had registered items stuck in sorting centers for up to three weeks while i tore my hair off trying to find it and spending hours on the phone with no luck. Nightmares really as i have had a reg item dissapear in an ISC facility and nobody giving a damn. Another time it said it arrived in my po box...was also left a notice for pick up..then nobody could find it! Thats my experience..perhaps others have had better luck.

No, I really think that is normal - Registered USPS is SLOW AF..... I was told by numerous USPS people it's because each registered mail package has to kept under lock and key the entire distance. So, assuming this is all MANUAL, that would account for the tracking slowness.... Edit - I have to assume it's some sort of internal "chain-of-custody" .....

Yes I understand that and dont mind how slow it is..but when an item is said to be at my post office AND a notice is left IN my PO BOX AND cannot be found...THAT IS DISTURBING.

Oh I certainly agree there - I have had that happen as well, but I chalk it up to the 3 or 4 bumbling old fools running my local post office (rural)... I always got my packs though! Did they find yours ever?

I'm not sure if ALL USPS PO's allow a secondary name since I had tried to use my forum name and it got rejected (RTS). From what I've read for my local PO, I could use a registered business name that I own, although I didn't see anything that would allow me to use my user name and PO mailing details. Some PO's are different and allow aliases, not mine but aliases are allowed for home mailing addresses from my experience as well. I agree with Krog's issues with Registered tracking, very odd how sometimes it seems like it's on time but it's actually delayed and no employee can find where it is.

Same here Digi - I actually asked them if I could use another name on the PO box, but they said no, it has to be my name, not even initials will work. I think you are right, all po's are slightly different. I could probably use a business address as well if I desired, but having the convenience of picking up FedEx/UPS signed packed makes it worth it alone to me. As for the form to add people on "the form", they only allow REAL people who have ID if needed, even if it's a business ....

Thanks for the great help everyone!! I figured people here would have had some experience with this... my wife thinks I'm super paranoid LOL. I tell her that my level of paranoia is the bare minimum for crypto... You aren’t paranoid. There are members here that have used personal information to extort and harass users of these forums. You are very justified in your thinking. Definitely can confirm this!!

No..that form is to apply for a po box. I dont recall the forms name as they just handed it to me ..i filled out right there and then and signed. Then all they told me was another name will be added to my box. That simple. Ask them to add another name and see what they say. And no didn't have to show my forum name on an ID.

I actually just got a PO Box last week and I definitely don’t remember any options of writing down other aliases to use for the box. I remember that the form (I actually think it was 1093) had space where you could write down a list of people who you are authorizing to come pick up stuff from your box... maybe I could’ve written down “phishead” on that, but I would never have thought that would’ve worked since I’m providing other personal documents like my passport and lease statement to prove identity and place of residence.
My question is, if you’ve already signed and paid for your PO Box, is there a way to edit in your alias possibly? Or would you have to wait until your contract ends and you apply again?

I have had a PO box for over 10 years...and did not know that option existed until they todl me. It was just a simple form really not the one applying for new or renewal po box.

There is the option of having the mail sent to a friend's address who is less reluctant to divulge such information. From there you could simply go and pick it up, that way, both your name and address and kept away from the bitcointalk boogeymen 😊

I got a box at a UPS Store. They said I can have packages sent to the box # without my name. They also said that there is a law prohibiting them from giving out my personal info to anyone without my written consent. (I actually had to sign a form acknowledging this law.) This of course isn't fool-proof, but it's probably good for small-time buyers like me

If you receive anonymous parcels often enough it is worthwhile using a forwarding service like https://mail-ghost.com/pricing/There are lots of forwarding services available. I don't live in either of the countries that mail ghost services and use a different forwarding service myself.

I’d also like to know the regulated US options. I’m frequently asked to serve as a middleman for physical goods deliveries, but don’t want to handle other people’s physical property without being insured to do so. It would be great if there was a reputable business filling this need.

If you receive anonymous parcels often enough it is worthwhile using a forwarding service like https://mail-ghost.com/pricing/There are lots of forwarding services available. I don't live in either of the countries that mail ghost services and use a different forwarding service myself. That is an interesting service indeed. Do they offer that in the USA? Yes. We call it Mantis Prime, contact minerjones for details....
