maybe it can boost the crypto value in the future

Not to undermine the intelligence of the people who will be paid with Ether, I think they will be coming from the lower strata of society wherein immediate payment is their preference.  Some may want to gamble and wait for the Ether price to go up.. But most likely, these are daily wages earners who will be happier if after work, they can bring home food for their families.

This is not really a big ethereum news, it doesn't use many of the features we love, it doesn't really show off the greatness of ethereum blockchain and doesn't really do anything other than just a good PR and a cheap advertisement. If this is a success they can go around cleaning beaches and paying people money and then call themselves "ethereum is so good it is used to clean the world" and whatever.

I think the main point here is that that money could have been paid in fiat as well, you can just directly pay cash to someone who cleans it, there are economic problems in Manila that causes them to not pay people to clean in general, give them a million dollars to clean everywhere and they will rank highest in hygiene rankings. Doesn't matter if its ether worth a million or just fiat a million.

Yet you have to start somewhere. You cannot begin to introduce people to the greatness and the lovable features without first introducing them to ethereum. You do that by obligated them to look in to it as they now own some.

That's basically what I wrote in my previous post, and I'm glad someone sees it this way and doesn't just think "crypto payments, YAY!".

If this is true:
As I said, $10.50 (roughly 500 pesos) is actually a very good days pay for a lot of Filipino's.
...then it sounds like a great opportunity for the local folks to earn some money doing worthwhile work, but I just can't bring myself to think that paying them in ETH is a good idea, especially when the market is very unstable.  I do also agree that some of the people who may know something about crypto may "gamble" and hold onto their ETH to see if it rises in value.  It's not a horrible thing, but yeah, it'd be much better if they could buy something to eat with their wages after getting paid.  Unless there's a market nearby that takes ETH, that's going to be mighty difficult to accomplish.

People will be paid in Ether for helping to clean up one of the most polluted beaches as part of a new movement to clean up plastic waste.

Bounties for the Oceans
The Bounties Network is teaming up with ConsenSys Social Impact to tackle the issue of plastic waste in our oceans.

Back in June, the Network undertook its first bounty-based social impact project with MakerDAO as part of World Oceans Day. However, since then, the team have been looking to see how they can make a bigger impact.

As part of their first pilot, they will be targeting Manila Bay in the Philippines. According to Greenpeace, the Philippines is the third biggest source of plastic ocean pollution in the world, making it an ideal place for the Bounties Network to start.

Taking place over two days from the 1st and 2nd of December, from 0800 until 1700 on both days, participants will be cleaning up the Las Piñas–Parañaque Critical Habitat Area. They will be paid up to 550 Philippine pesos ($10.50) per day, which will be made in Ether.

Taking to Twitter, Joseph Lubin, founder of ConsenSys and co-founder of Ethereum, announced the project.

On its website, the Network said:

Quote
With our oceans in crisis, the devastating ecological consequences of our actions are becoming abundantly clear, and global solutions are needed. We believe blockchain-based bounties have the potential to incentivize global participation in social impact projects and donation crowdsourcing.

The hope is that this will create a “decentralized social impact contribution network with the ability to extend across the globe.” By doing so, it will “incentivize and activate millions of hours of human capital” that will “collaborate for positive social and environmental outcomes.”

According to the UN, 80 percent of all pollution in our oceans comes from people. Additionally, eight million tons of plastic per year end up in our oceans, impacting wildlife, jobs, and tourism. With plastic causing billions of dollars worth of damage each year, steps need to be taken to tackle the issue.

With Bounties for the Ocean, it’s hoping to achieve just this.

In order to receive Ether for the cleanup, a photo of the participant and the rubbish they’ve collected must be taken at the Las Piñas–Parañaque Critical Habitat Area. This should then be uploaded with one of the Bounties anchor volunteers. If possible, the image should be shared on social media tagging @ethBounties and using #bountiesfortheoceans.

Each correct submission will be rewarded 0.03 ETH on acceptance.

https://www.livebitcoinnews.com/manila-residents-to-be-paid-in-ether-for-cleaning-up-polluted-habitat-area/

....

Perhaps good news for a change.

This could be a good idea both for practical purposes such as cleaning up pollution as well as marketing and promotional purposes in terms of spreading positive examples of crypto utilization as a means of furthering societal good.

Not certain how cost effective it is or how well their payment scaling stacks up against cost of living in the philippines.

But it is nice to see someone making an effort.   Smiley

This good news covers two rational human problems, between the lack of human awareness of a clean environment, and other crypto benefits for their finances. With such a method of payment, it's hoped that this can trigger wealthy citizens to adopt Ether as much as possible, at least until "can make" Ether prices increase.

This is good news for the crypto community as it will gain more popularity but i don't think that it would work well because the knowledge of an ordinary Filipino about crypto is not that good. They can be exploited by someone who is corrupt and does have knowledge on how crypto works. Sorry for being negative on this but somehow that is what i see on this situation.

This is a job that's important enough to do right, and I don't think that paying people in ETH is any advantage to anyone.  Sorry to be a negative Nelly, but if you're working all day for fucking $10.50, at least you should be getting paid in fiat.
Being paid $10.50 for a day's work is even above minimum here in the Philippines.

I have mixed reactions on this one.
first, The Philippines is not exactly exposed to such technologies as cryptocurrency; it is just starting to make a name for itself here and I do not think Filipinos will work their butt off cleaning streets or polluted areas for virtual money -- its just that they do not understand how this thing works, so yeah they will still prefer to be paid in paper fiat.

On the other hand, this can jump start the crypto industry in the PH. This can be a breakthrough considering the country is third world country.

overall the intention is good and can be a help not just fund people but to fund the economy as well.

The bounties are still running

https://explorer.bounties.network/bounty/592
https://explorer.bounties.network/bounty/1511

~250 accepted and I would guess about 1/4 rejected.

In one year the results are ...let's say just disappointing.

This is really a good move in both ways promoting crypto and cleaning the environment. I still have to believe tho that this act should be voluntarily made. And using the bounties instead in taking care the said polluted areas like contributing such as buying more trash bins and sign boards or hiring someone to check the area for a possible abuse

I don't think that most of the people in the Philipines know what ethereum isand I'm sure that they don't have ethereum wallets. The project devs are going to pay them with a cryptocurrency that is going to crash and decrease it's price, which isn't fair.Projects that are oriented towards cleaning the environment are always good, but this project won't lead to further crypto adoption.

This one doesn't matter it can easily be introduced  to the cleaners  and they can easily convert it to Fiat through coins.

General saying, I don't think crypto is used to pay for cleaning services just for that but it was shown that it was accepted for a service rendered as a means of payment. If we talk about it as in dealing in the service it was used for ; which is for cleaning, it will look as if it is just used for a cleaning payment alone.

It's a very interesting concept. Many international environment ngos (non governamental organizations) want to care for third world countries nature, and crypto currency can help them to give more transparency to their work, and it can also facilitate the donations coming from worldwide, what will also simplify the way the employees (like the ones who are going to clean the polluted area) will be paid.

Projects like this create job opportunities that are scarce on such countries and teach people how better it is to live on a clean space.
I just hope they don't dirty all these areas again after cleaned to keep working on this task and profiting for longer. Cheesy

Right. This is really a good start for ethereum to gain more acknowledgement not just to the people who participated the clean up but mostly to all the residents in the Philippines. And the fact that it is used to paid for them,it only proves that ethereum can be very society friendly and of course a friendly user currency.

Weird that I never heard of this. But I guess it's good for the urban poor in the area, they get to profit and they'd clean up the river. I hope it wouldn't be like the Indian cobra scenario though.

Even if this doesn't completely clean the river and bay, they at least got introduced to crypto. After ETH it's just a matter of time before they find out how to use BTC.

Then they will find out. The organization is likely going to walk them through the process of making a wallet.

Also, the people they'll include the project likely don't make more than $5 a day, even with a slight decrease in ETH price that amount of money isn't something they'd just stumble upon. I saw kids picking up trash in the river on TV, they'd never be able to earn $5 from doing that all day.

In the Philippines, they attach great importance to and develop blockchain technology as well as support crypto. that's why so many people now use crypto as a means of payment and it is spreading very wide.
This is also a way to spread the influence of blockchain technology. then soon, we will also see that there are more countries like the Philippines and the crypto market that have more investors.

Nope, the project never stopped.
The good part is that the funds never run out, the bad part is that in almost a year they had less than 300 claims for the bounties posted.

So, from my point of view, as I said it before, it's quite the failure.

In the Philippines, they attach great importance to and develop blockchain technology as well as support crypto. that's why so many people now use crypto as a means of payment and it is spreading very wide.

Yeah, blockchain, how about before talking about the technology you start cleaning your country from all the trash that is laying there? Wow, we use blockchain to pay people to pick up trash, and it's working great because we have mountains of trash!!! /sarcasm

I will help in a way that I can, I will not be able to help in cleaning but I hope I can help in other way.

What way?

We need such innovation in africa too because Africa is more polluted

Do you need innovation for such thing?

I haven't heard updates on this. Maybe because I am not there  Smiley.
I wonder how many people  participated in this since it is talking about crypto as a reward and since not everyone knows about crypto I doubt someone who doesn't understand will join. What could be the reason why they chose Ether and not cash, if paying in cash will bring more volunteer then I don’t see any advantage why they chose to pay ethereum.
