Ethereum is probably going higher because of the expected stake deal. As soon as the hard fork passes the people with more ethereums will gain more ethereums thanks to staking, all the fees and new coins will be going to their wallets instead of miners. This means the more eth you have the more you will stake kinda like interest you get from your savings account in the banks.

It means people started to grab as much eth as they can afford and this created a demand that supply couldn't cover so the price went up. I don't know how long this will continue but I assume this will continue at least until the hard fork. As soon as people start to stake they will either continue to buy more ethereum to make more profits or they will not be happy with the amount they are making and start to sell their coins.

ETH and BTC are both good for the long term. I do think that when the market recovery starts BTC will lead the way. However ETH price is increasing probably due to the forthcoming Constantinople upgrade.
If the question is to buy ETH or BTC, just look at the historic ETH chart vs BTC. ETH bounced up from the bottom support level quite recently, so it is still lower than normal vs BTC. The question is whether the Constantinople effect will tail off before the whole market bull returns.

I think you should choose XRP to buy now. Because XRP and ETH are fighting to win second place. Which those previous pump last few days is just a normal reaction because of the volatility , but it's a big sign as well that there's still a tends of recovery  . which is unlike others predictions about it (opposite). The price of ETH v Bitcoin does indeed look very low at the moment. Best time to buy was probably when it was around half its current price. Not sure how much of the current rise is due to the upcoming ETH fork, and how much is just because it hit a low point anyway. Either way ETH is a solid long-term coin to hold. Might be worth watching price movements immediately after the fork kicks in as well, just in case anything dramatic starts to happen.

The ETH price increase is probably due to the hard fork, but it was at historic lows against BTC anyway, so that may have played a part. It's difficult to see whether it will continue to rise or not given that the bear market for crypto as a whole has shown no signs of abating.
