Hey all, I've been away for a while and this forum seems to have changed, perhaps even more quiet?
Do you think "crappy ICO's" chased a lot of people away from this forum?  and/or
What did I miss, any big (BCT) news or changes you can think of?

If the "crappy ICOs" ever had an effect on Bitcointalk's activity, then it's probably very minuscule. The decrease in forum activity is more because of the new 1 merit requirement for Jr members(they find getting 1 merit difficult for some reason), and along with that, the decrease in the price of bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in general.

If anything, while the total activity in the forum decreased, it's still a good thing, as it's the spam that has decreased; hence we sort of have more meaningful and less-spammy conversations now compared to the past.

Last time I checked the number of users in this community is: 2517721. When I joined this community in early 2017, it was just close to a million so it more than doubled ever since. So it clearly debunked the myth that "crappy ICO chased a lot of people away from this forum".

I think more people left due to the fact that it has become alarmingly difficult to earn via the forum, and it's actually advantageous to the forum,as such users who picture the forum as a work place are actually not needed as they contribute greatly to the large number of spam and meaningless stuff on the forum.
It's become difficult for them to earn for quite some reasons which include ranking up,1 merit to Jr member serves as a barrier for the extremely bad posters who waited months and months after the implementation, yet couldn't rank up,low prices of cryptocurtency, even the bitcoin is at a very low price at the moment coupled with other alts, most of such users were attracted by bullish trends which are no more, the more reason for their exit.
Another reason is banned users, after the implementation of 1 merit to Jr member,so many users in here were ready to go the extra mile to rank up and that includes copying other's works and articles which got them banned, there have been quite a large number of ban appeal threads on the forum in the last 3 months.
Scam ICOs have also contributed in reducing the number of posters in here.etc

Crappy ICOs is a blessing in disguise at some point. There's a lot of spam in my local board where new topics or spammy replies keep being posted each minute in order to fulfill their signature post requirements. After months of 'hard work' most of them end up not getting paid because those crappy ICOs who run their bounty failed or don't fulfill their promise. After that people become more aware of scammy ICO and then start doing their own due diligence.

I like the current activity compared to last year. It's not a problem if we have a few active people as long as discussion can keep on-going and spammer/scammer move on from this forum.

crappy ICO, reduced price of BTC from all time high, Inability of them to write some good content on their own, Getting their post deleted due to low quality and spam and get caught for plagiarism when they are trying to fish merit, not able to farm account due to merit requirement ,bored by too much of spam here  are main reason for the users leaving the forum.

every couple of years (usually 2-2.5) we have a large scale altcoin pump crap going on in different forms. 2017 was in form of ICOs, before that it was with premined altcoins, and so on. each time they last a considerable amount of time which sometimes is called "altcoin pumping season". during that time there is a lot of easy profit which will attract a lot of "newbies" and basically those who are gullible to the market who will pour their money and time into altcoins. so obviously activity increases during those times.

but each "pumping season" is always followed by a "dumping season" where all the crap is being purged from the market. for example when the premined shitcoins die, when the ICO tokens disappear and join their copies in the altcoin graveyard,... as the purge happens, every newbie who joined during the pumping time will slowly start leaving it behind. which is part of the reason for decreased activity.

This information is from November 2018 (see Analysis - Bitcointalk Accounts – Date of Register vs Last Active per Rank), but it serves its purpose to make a point:

If we take a look at 2017 created accounts (620.944), only 208.156 had any sort of activity (at least logged on) during 2018; that is 33,52%.

Now if we move on to another of my tables, we come across this one:

What we see here is that during 2018 (up until November) we had 680.255 still Brand New accounts (i.e. no posts and/or nuked). Since the total amount of created accounts at the time during 2018 was 895.158, that shows that a hell of a lot of the accounts are created but never actually post (or they got nuked). The same concept for 2017 renders 434.487 Brand New Accounts which currently bear the same rank.

A lot more accounts were created during 2017/2018, logically at the rate that BTC and alts grew both in terms of price and awareness, but the total number of registered number of users is not what really counts (although correlated), since under the hood we can see that a grand majority of these accounts are created without ever posting, many of them likely related to bot burts that try to lay the foundations for their posterior activity (many seem to fail and get no further than creating the accounts).

The forum interface is diverse. Different boards for different topics in ICOs, bitcoin, marketing, trading and many more including local boards.
Any user has the option of ignoring a board, a section or a user. You can control what you don't see, also controlling what you do see.

It was the annoying sig spamming associated with the ICOs that probably put off a lot of members, and if they aren't reading threads, then they aren't posting. We still have a lot of members misusing the quote function as well - they just don't seem to get it into their heads that you don't need to quote in full to make a reply. In fact, if you make unnecessary quotes, your posts will certainly be skipped over by some members, and these may be the active quality posters. Unskilled posting also contributes to the loss of members.

In my opinion the main reason for reduced activity is the price of Bitcoin. During a strong bull market, people are joining and seeking information to jump on the train. Falling off an express train may cause you to avoid rail travel in the future. Of course, as soon as the next express train leaves the EMA ribbon, new "speculators" will be trying to jump on as it rushes through their local stations without stopping. Expect a flood of new posters during this period. This will be good for the forum, and for Bitcoin in my opinion.

I consider scam or crappy ICOs here being shown in the forum as a learning experience for us members of the forum. With the ANN threads and whitepaper you will see as well as their team members it tells a lot of things if an ICO will be successful or not. So even if you are victimized by one you will learn the most important lesson of avoiding scam ICOs ever again and I don't think the part of that blame will be because of the forum. With my years being part of the forum I never have seen any blame towards BCT for them being scammed by an ICO so I do not think it discourages people to stay here in the forum but of course discourage them to invest in ICOs overall.

I am a newbie here and this is my first post but I do not think that Crappy ICOs chased people from this forum because while surfing the forum, I have yet to come across any post about ICO, I think they have their section but I am still yet to even find it, this means that there are several sections for everything, so if you avoid the ICO section, there is no need to exit the forum.

Agree, theese are far more important reasons than crappy ICO's.
When price of Bitcoin is low people tend to turn their interest to something else, to come back when price is high Wink.
1 merit req is additional reason with same importance

Crappy ICOs duping investors using supposedly legitimate escrows, overpriced products with no innovation, legitimate projects being attacked by trolls, trust abusers running wild, shitposters, scammers, crooked signature managers paying their alts and keeping newbies from participating, unprofessional behavior and language from veteran members directed towards newbies... Pick your poison. The forum is under attack by more than just shitcoins.

This forum is full of merit diggers and trust diggers. Being an admin on bodybuilding.com forums (even larger community) I have learned alot as the years go by. Only way to stop the spam is to focus on the source. The sources are account farmers farming to sell accounts and members posting any random stuff just to hope and get a merit, probably leveling up to sell account once Full member or higher ranked. This will not end well.  Best solution would be to make 3 memberships and keep the current merit system or make it even harder.

1- Copper membership. (already good, you can post pics)
2- Silver membership. (can add a longer signature)
3- Gold membership. (can add an avatar and longer signature)

You can even put high prices, these account farmers won't have enough to pay for this.  This would render account sellers useless as anyone could just buy a gold membership. You can even keep the merit system how it is or make it even harder by raising the requirements, just give newcomers a chance to have an avatar even if we have to pay for it. For gods sake i want my pet bird as my avatar lol 🐦. I am a business man, crypto investor, c++ developer and a family man and won't nor have the time to level up my account per say. So if I stay as a newbie so be it, I don't mind.  At least I can add my twitter account to signature.  Smiley
