I have no country on my mind on where bitcoin originated. And your question is just a re-phrase of OP's question so there's no difference at all. Thinking that Satoshi Nakamoto is a Japanese name, it isn't enough to say that it originated on Japan because someone who's living online can create his name base on other's nationality names. There's no assurance and validation that SN is a male or a female and even living on Japan or a Japanese citizen but we are sure that it's a pseudonym to hide his real identity.

Good point! Also why would governments create obstacles in the way of mass adoption, especially in the very beginning, if they were behind the whole thing? I think it's a widespread mistake, overestimating governments' capacities. They may have armies and law enforcement agencies in their disposal, but they don't have more brains than average people have, and most likely they are simply unable to create something as technically great as Bitcoin.
