So let me understand this. You want to sell 1000 tickets for 0.005btc each , meaning you will get 5 bitcoin from each round but you will give  only 1 bitcoin back to people. Even if one ticket would cost only 0.002btc as it is on the website you still only offer back 50% of what you get,wich for a lottery is a huge house edge.

Is it possible to do this with a smart contract?

I mean not with Bitcoin (which seems to be impossible yet) but with some other coin like Ethereum. From a user's perspective, the difference is pretty negligible between the two coins (for this thing), but the issues of trust will be greatly alleviated. Escrows these days cannot be trusted either even though 1 BTC is not so great amount to scam on. So I think making use of a smart contract is the right thing to do here, people may actually get interested

Yeah, they should have started with less squares. I think 10x10 would do for a start. If they are going to scam (which we can't exclude), expecting someone to buy up all 100 squares might be a reasonable idea after all. Then they would just shut down the shop and run away with the money. If they are in it for real, they could start adding more squares after assessing the first results and probably entice users with more features (like real lotteries do all the time) as they gain experience in this field

There are some good insight in your first paragraph. People do not want to wait for a draw. They want instant result. However someone we are adopted with the national lottery but that's different story. People do not mind to spare £1 or £2 for lotto.

All gambling sites has their own expenses, but it is not a good reason to increase the house edge become so high. They should know how to attract gamblers in the beginning, they should spend some money for the expenses from their own pocket first instead of trying to pay the expenses from the game at the very beginning. I don't even think that their expenses for this game in one round is that much (85% or 0.85btc). Logically most gambling start need to lose some money first on their beginning phase for those expenses then they will be able to recover it day by day from the profit they make. On other hand, this site is not willing to spend money for those expenses from their own wallet as they try to get income + get money to pay for the expenses from players at the very beginning.

Yep, since the site is new, for a while, until you get a good name, I also suggest you to use an escrow.
