sireffa, since you update from very old version to latest it is very possible that there is a conflict between old and new files. So before you do anything take advice from NeuroticFish and make copy of your wallet data,
and what is even more important be sure you have correct seed (12 words).Then you can navigate to Electrum folder which is located in %APPDATA%\Electrum\wallets (just copy paste this in windows explorer), and delete whole folder. After that you can install new Electrum from here :
https://electrum.org/#download , just use Windows Installer.
To recover your old wallet, use Standard wallet -> I already have a seed -> Enter seed words (carefully, one wrong letter and wallet will not be recovered) -> Then choose type of address (in your case it is probably "legacy") -> You can set password to protect your wallet ( be sure to write it down).
