I just love the good underdog story and this fight was exactly that.
This was a huge win for Sean Strickland, and he is the first one to defeat Chimaev in professional MMA fight!  Shocked
I wrote before that I am expecting much closer fight than the odds suggest, and betting on Strickland was very profitable.

I’m so happy that Strickland beat Chimaev. The more I learn about Khamzat the more I think he doesn’t deserve anyone’s respect. Glad that Sean got to be the good guy here and take down that POS… I don’t even want to say the horrible person that Chimaev is…

OK, so Dana White confirmed, in the post-fight conference, that the first thing Chimaev told him after the loss is that he wants to move to light heavyweight.
I suppose there must be some truth to the rumours that Chimaev did not actually make weight and the UFC just let it slide to save the event. Even if he did, it could've been realy hard on him and potentially drained his energy and affected his performance.

I think it's an ideal move to be honest and a win-win for all. Chimaev will not have to cut down so much. Light heavyweight, after Alex Pereira's move to heavyweight, is in need of big names. Carlos Ulberg is not very hyped up, and he's injured. And middleweight has enough big names for now.

ps. the co-main event Van Vs Taira deserves credit, it was a great fight. I thought Taira was going to win, but things were not the same after he got knocked down. Both of them gave a good show.

Rumors that Conor McGregor vs Max Holloway is almost a done deal are spreading around social media. I’ve written Conor off so many times at this point that I’m not sure I would believe it even if the UFC announced it, but I sure would love to see it happen.

I’m sorry, but I don’t think Sean deserves this belt. He backed down the entire fight, and his guard is comical.

Quote

Kamaru Usman believes Khamzat Chimaev deserved the win over Sean Strickland

“One guy is marching forward and he’s throwing jabs as well. He’s mixing it up, he’s throwing overhands, and he does get some takedowns, and he did this for almost 5 rounds.

I don’t see how he loses the fight. The other guy just backed up and jabbed the whole time.”

I made almost the exact same comment with a professional MMA fighter. I received some criticism accusing me of not understanding what goes on in the cage because of this post. :) By the way, I don’t think Khamzat deserves this belt. If he can’t sleep someone who DDP crushed and Alex knocked out, then he doesn’t deserve it in my mind.

Anyone who looked at the situation objectively could have easily seen that. So, how long can Sean defend this belt? Will he hand it back to any street vendor in their first match? :)

Khamzat is a bit of a crazy character, so he’s an exception, but generally speaking, hating fighters like Khamzat and Islam while tolerating types like Sean who openly commit hate crimes is a behavior that can only be explained by ideological bigotry.

Some people say “oww, this is boring” while these guys are riding their opponents like horses for five rounds, but they see someone who backs down, runs away, and wins a belt this way as a champion.

Let’s be honest, this isn’t hard: Sean is diminishing the value of the division, the company, and most importantly, this sport in every way... :)

Who could imagine that Strickland would win the match?

Someone in the previous post said he saw this.

I already thought Sean would win

https://x.com/UFCFRA/status/2053269592051441911

Did you see how Yaroslav Amosov finished it? It’s not exactly the same, but it reminded me of the DJ’s legendary finish. I wish he were a bit younger. He also has a very interesting life story.
No, unfortunately I watched the main match, and only after it finished.
So I knew who won before watching the match, which is bad. I'll watch all the matches at the next event. What a takedown! Yaroslay made a much stronger finish than Amosov. Especially the takedown and the subsequent finish were truly top-notch. Great timing and no words can describe his power.

What did i say how the fight will go mate. Sean Strickland won the fight and it was one of the greatest fights this year.

Everyone else will be surprised, Sean Strickland sold the fight and won the fight, Khamzat Chimaev should handle his weight cutting to fight in optimal condition, if not you need to reserve your stamina for the final rounds and someone with a bigger stamina will outbox you and that is what happened tonight.
I saw your quote earlier and thought I had already replied to it, but I hadn't.
You called it and we have a new champion. It going to split decision shows how tight the fight was, that's why some are arguing the decision claiming it should have gone the other way, but when it's so tight you can have little excuse. Another huge upset from Strickland in his career.

About this being one of the greatest fights, we've had few exciting cards so far but the fight was pretty game to me for the most part, there's been lots of other exciting matches fought.

If Chimaev opponent wasnt Strickland, and he would not have won the fight, he would start a big drama shit that Chimaev did not make weight, this was not a title fight and demanded a title fight Cheesy I hope and believe, that Chimaev understood that if he would won without making weight, that will be an unfair title defense. There would be nothing to be happy about if you win but cheat with weight.

Anyway, there are lot of question to Chimaev stamina again. Remember how easily he went 5 rounds of wrestling with DDP, and how after second or even first round, when his tactics of "quick smesh" failed, he started fighting than wrestling. Again his take down in first and win quick failed, and rest of the fight he went throwing punches instead of continuing wrestling. Same scenario was with Burn, when Chimaev leaded first half of the match but later started useless brawl. Same happened with Usman, when he was winning in the beginning, but Usman looked better (and maybe even took) in late rounds.

I read many comments online on different platforms where people say that this fight was sold and Khamzat took a lot of money. First of all, it makes absolutely zero sense because Khamzat can make tons of money by being a Champion. His hype was built around the fact that he was unbeatable and now this hype is gone, which can permanently affect his career.
Even Connor VS Khabib wasn't sold and even Merab VS Sean O'Malley wasn't sold, so why on earth anyone thinks that they would sell this fight? Some people make no sense when they talk.

^  Yeah...  Dunno about that...  Lol.  It's just some people who can't accept that the huge favorite in Chimaev lost to Strickland of all people.  Lolol.

I think it's hilarious tbh.  I love seeing underdogs win from time to time.  The UFC were prolly kicking themselves for not including the bout in the White House event.

Situation with Khamzat I think is very clear. He is no longer hungry. Years ago, when he lived, trained and worked (as a bouncer) in Sweden, when he was in charge of taking care of family, he was hungry. Now look at him. Fancy clothes, expensive watch collection (some of them were given as gifts, but now he started to collect them by himself), luxury cars, he is loved and worshiped in Emirates, his friendship with Ramzan Kadyrov (head of the Chechen Republic) who gave him Maybach GLS600 as a present. I dont think Khamzat is now hungry and really interested in fighting. Not to mention he is a modest (or try to look) person, that prefer to spend time with his mother at home.

P.S. From Youtube video blogging: before UFC 328, Chimaev went to gucci store and bought every member of his team and friends bags (backpacks, over the shoulder bags, wallets), just as a present. He was a coach in Russian fighting reality show and gave one of his team members car as a present. I dont know how much money he has, but I think he has enough for him and his next generation to live without working and bothering about something.

It’s not difficult for me to explain this to you in a clearer and more objective way.

- Two days ago, just like the other 8 billion people in the world, you didn’t bet on Sean.
- Three months from now, if there’s a rematch with DDP or Khamzat, you will do the same thing.
- You did this and will do this again based on what you see inside the cage, just like the other 8 billion people in the world.

In your opinion, who is interpreting what’s inside the cage now, and who is in a bigger contradiction?
Let us not overestimate your knowledge of the fight game and underestimate the entire world Tongue

I have mentioned here about an upset considering how much he had to cut to reach the championship weight limit. Below is the same exact one i said before the fight for your reference, i made that post quoting you and looks like you failed to read the responses.

How is it even possible to cut 21 Kg in a short period of time and then expect to fight the very next day with your full strength. It will affect his cardio in the final rounds since he had to go through the weight cutting torture and i wont be surprise if there will be an upset tomorrow.

Since you mentioned about placing a bet, Jorge Masvidal who is a professional fighter made a $100,000 bet on Sean Strickland and after seeing the weigh ins, I placed a bet on under rather than placing a bet on Khamzat Chimaev to win FYI. So there goes you 8 billion theory.  Cheesy Tongue

Three days ago, Khamzat was ranked 3rd on the P4P list. Three days ago, anyone who said Sean should be there wouldn’t even be able to get a driver’s license in some U.S. cities. Doctors would tell him to get a medical report... Smiley

Is there anyone today who could say Sean should be ranked 3rd? I’m sure no one would say that.
If you care too much about the ranking, media decides who gets into the pound 4 pound ranking and majority of them are so called pundits who never had an amateur or professional fight in their career.

Not sure about the rest of the ramblings, i understand you are too much vested on the pundits and influencers who predicts these fights but there are other facts that you need to consider.

This fight completely demonstrated to me that Khamzat’s skills outside of wrestling are insufficient for an elite fighter. We’d witnessed this in his previous fights against Kamaru and Burns, but his fight against Sean proved it conclusively. DDP dominated Sean on his feet; Alex knocked him out. If you can’t knock out Sean, who are you going to knock out?
Here is yet another demonstration of how you view fights, have you watched the fight, Khamzat Chimaev is an elite grappler and a decent striker but when you cut 21Kg to meet the weight, it will reflect on your body and he gassed out in the first round, watch the fight again, he could not complete the take down in the second round and Sean was able to reverse that with ease, what does it say !!!

Interesting.
I would imagine he made enough money to secure his financial future, i.e. he can afford to never work again while maintaining a fairly modest lifestyle, but I don't think he made nearly as much as to splash out money on buying expensive cars to people.
He only really had 3 high-profile fights prior to the Strickland fight. But maybe he made more from gifts from Kadyrov, sponsorship deals and other sources than he made from UFC fights.

He has really only just entered the stage of his career when the real money start flowing in. But not every fighter is primarily money-motivated.
My personal guess would be that he was really struggling with weight cutting, which took a massive toll on his body and fighting enthusiasm. But maybe we just don't want Strickland the credit he deserves. There were quite a lot of fighters who pointed him as a winner, which can't be a coincidence.

I think Chimaev will bounce back. And it's not like he got badly beaten by Sean. It was a close fight and a split decision loss.

Remember how few pages back I have posted about how Tsarukyan has increased value of RAF promotion by having wrestling fights there? He has said it was easy money for him aslo. Check out RAF 10 June 13 card. Khamzat Chimaev vs Dillon Danis... Another easy money for Chimaev. Value of promotion will skyrocket. Why fighting against Danis? There is an option for Chimaev to earn easy money there, instead of fighting in UFC... Kinda betrayal...

He has said many times that his priority was money but I wouldn't say that he lost his hunger. He needs hunger to maintain that luxury lifestyle because his fighting skills gave them to him and if he stops being good at fighting, his wealth will be taken from him. Not directly taken but he won't receive new wealthy things and with his cognitive abilities, I don't think that he will run successful businesses.

Ilia Topuria is the best fighter out there and I would even call him the GOAT. The man buys luxury things but he took fighting on another level. He invested a lot of money into his training, nutrition, recovery and strategy building. He is a phenomenal fighter and no one is on his level right now. He used money smartly. Instead of following a luxury lifestyle, he invested in his personal development as a fighter.

Have problems with weight cutting, then stop cheating with it and fight in your natural weight Cheesy As if it was his first time dying while cutting weight. And his excuse that he wants to go to LH is such a bs. Because guys there cut weight also to fit in. If last weekend he has taken multiple jabs from Strickland and got only face smashed, then a jab from bigger guys will turn his light out. Who he will fight against ?

Ulberg? That guy is huge. He has good takedown defense.

Jiri? Rumors try to say that Chimaev was preparing to fight him. Jiri wrestle and grapple on same level with Texeira. If Chimaev was dead after first round of wrestling with Strickland, than how he would look after Jiri? Plus Jiri will never tap Cheesy Jiri will gnp Borz to death.

Ankalaev? Also low chances of winning.

Costa? As a fight it will be interesting, but Costa is on secret juice while Chimaev has troubles with stamina. Costa is a good kicker also, and strong af.

Rountree ? Only possible opponent. But then what? Move to LH to win Rountree and lose to lower in tier guys? Not a legacy we expect from former champ.

Pereira? This fight will never happen.

^  Exactly why Chimaev 'was dead after first round of wrestling with Strickland'...  He cut too much weight as he got bigger lately.  I don't think he'll have the same problem with Prochazka 205.  If anything, Chim will be a lot stronger with his wrestling.

I think it's gonna be Ankalaev vs Chim for the 205 strap at some point.  Wink

There will be always one bad sheep in your herd Cheesy How many crazy parlays have you already tried? How many correct picks you had in one parlay on average? Its time to run statistics. I have quickly gone through odds, and there are too many 1.60-2.5 predictions which means its going to be such a random in octagon, that almost every fight will be like flipping a coin.

I dont see Bukauskas vs Edwards (previously it was Bellato) in your pick. Could be an easy pick as Edwards will be having a debut against experienced guy and it is going to be a catchweight, that also plays in favor for Bukauskas.

^  I mean yeah...  I know it's a long shot but it's all for the lulz and fun.  And I wasn't asking everybody if they think it'll win.  I'm asking more about the match ups if you guys agree or not.

And like you said, there are 1.60 - 2.50 picks in the list.  So which of the 1.60 - 2.50 ones do you disagree with and why?

As for the Bukauskas vs Edwards match up, it wasn't listed at Stake when I did the picks.

You have quite a mix of choosing favorites and not. For instance Santos and Wellmaker, I agree on that bet, but why Costa over Allen? Because Costa is higher in top and he is on a series of wins? But Allen has more experience. Allen lost only to Evloev and Holloway, and accidentally to Silva, who was on a good series of wins. Gulure - not a single win in UFC, but you have picked him. Even in contenders series he won by split decision, which means he was "." that close to losing. Gulure had finishes only in some local promotions and they were first round mostly. Is he really experienced or did not have enough to gain it? As soon as he left his local promotion he had only decisions and losses in UFC. Why have you chosen him?

With rest pick I agree with you / ignore chick mma so I cant help or comment much Cheesy
