Lot of Newbies suddenly wake up after many years of hiatus

I've noticed last week newbies suddenly waking up:

And there's still a lot of accounts out there, I will report them later. They started to post in this thread, https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4810134.260 minutes after one another, that caught my attention. What I'm afraid of is that this account might buy/trade some merits to rank up to be able to join bounties later.

I reviewed all of their post histories and they all are making very low quality replies in the Off Topic sub. They are mostly posting in the same threads, and none of them are putting any effort into any of their recent posts.

I reported a handful of the threads they are posting in for attracting no effort replies. I strongly suspect they are hacked by someone who is planning on doing something not good with them.

I don't see risks fro them if they did not scam in the past 8 or 9 years (it seems they did not); because nowadays it is so hard to scam other users in the forum with newbie accounts. Especially when there are lots of scam hunters like ICOethics, and others. Additionally, the topic in which you listed them all, decrease chance to scam others by using those accounts.
I guess there are two possible reasons:
- They are from past account farm(s), that woke up recently.
- They from someone whom own hacked accounts, now use them to spam or run bumping service.

They are all transparently the same person today. I can't think of any other reason why they would all have the same posting patterns, be posting in the same threads, and all be posting exclusively no effort posts.

I don't see the value in selling nor buying them, but it would not be the strangest trades in the Invites & Accounts section. They could have at one point been hacked if weak passwords were used.

Data breaches will eventually push out the most weakly-secured accounts. I'm willing to bet that what's happened is that we're seeing various Newbie accounts reactivate due to their low barrier of entry.

Higher-ranked accounts were most likely cracked earlier due to their value and (expected) higher security.

I see no threat to them anymore I think. Maybe they are just reawakened because of bumping or maybe because of spamming.

I think those accounts will be reported and banned (maybe).

I checked 4 of them on BPIP, and they all changed their password in August last year. Someone has been planning his spam-army for a long time, so that the accounts don't show "password changed" when they're activated.

It's probably account farming from a member who didn't know yet about the new merit system since merit system is almost 1 year now and most of the accounts are wake up after 4-8 years. He/she maybe know that it's still easy to rank up accounts now since most of the posts are on off-topic board.

Hmm... My understanding is that old accounts that hadn't been touched for many years were automatically banned as a security measure after the forum got hacked and the password hashes were leaked. In fact, I have several extremely old newbie and junior member accounts which display the below message if you try to log in with them:

Sorry XXX, you are banned from using this forum!
Your account is locked because it sat inactive for years after the password hashes were leaked in 2015, and was therefore at high risk of being hacked. Email XXX@XXX.com to get it unlocked.

As far as I know there is nothing even brand new can post on ANN so they no need any activity to be increased for shilling.

There is no activity requirement but the shillers would still probably want to build up their accounts with posts before starting their spam fest so that the accounts involved don't look brand new and just recently created.
