Do you give me a quote? I can not find it.
It took me a while, but I managed to find it. I remembered that I merited the person who shared the quote, which made it much easier. Upgrade00 quoted theymos here

The original post by theymos dates back to 2015. It's this one:
I can manually make threads self-moderated (only I can do this), but I only do this if the thread is extremely long/entrenched and the OP is trustworthy, since you are not allowed to delete any posts made before the topic became self-moderated.

Even in the event that an attacker gains more than 50% of the network's computational power, only transactions sent by the attacker could be reversed or double-spent. The network would not be destroyed.

I am not sure why theymos did not mention Archival.
Wouldn't that be irrelevant?  Archival is basically the trashcan where dead threads go to die, so it's not as if members can create threads in it--and they certainly wouldn't be worried about whether those threads were self-moderated or not.  Someone correct me if I'm wrong there.

I don't know but it seems your opinion is correct.

I tried to search the use case of Archival board in Unofficial list of (official) Bitcointalk.org rules, guidelines, FAQ but failed (not sure why). Anyway, the short description is
  • Archival: Old stuff.

  • Archival: Old stuff.
The Archival is used as a testing ground by some members. I have seen campaign managers and ANN thread creators post threads there to check how they look before creating the official thread in another section of the forum. I don't know if the use cases for Archival changed throughout the years, but here is what theymos had to say about it in one of his posts:

Old threads don't need to be moved to Archival. Just lock them. Archival is meant to be used by moderators in only a few rare situations. (Though I don't mind if you move your obsolete topics there if you want to for some reason.)
It was never intended to be a graveyard, but theymos doesn't mind that it became one. Maybe someone else has some more information about the "rare situations" it was supposed to be used for.

You've done quite a good job on this thread as to some extent, it sums up the most developments on the forum that one might wonder as to how it came to be and how come others tends to have some privileges than others.
I can say most of the threads to have futured is good enough for me but I feel there is one more that you could add if i may:

Remove Proxyban (evil fees) - email to get whitelisted for free

For a time I think this has been probably an issue for new users from joining up on the forum. You know, in an instance you think you've found this new forum that you could learn, contribute and possibly benefit but your hit with a proxyban (Evil fee). You know it takes a truly determined mind to go through from there and for others, they fade off. Especially when they've got no one to motivate them or help them push through with the fee. Even given the fact that, most of them might not have the know how on a way to work a bitcoin payment, never owns a sat and shits like that.

The whitelisting procedure very much comes through for these users, it's a new inception and I feel makes it to the historic changes of the forum if you ask me.

Bump after a long time!
Tbh, this is a great thread. If not that you decided to bump this thread, I wouldn't have known that such a nice thread exists. Many good posts are indeed buried in btt, especially the ones whose authors are no longer available in the forum to bump.
I have read the history of the newbie jail, it wasn't as strict and harming I thought it was. Any newbie whose intention wasn't to spam could easily escape the jail.

Thank you!

I put efforts when I am doing something with relevant and meaningful objectives before I started. Sometimes, my works (topics) are great, sometimes they are not.

For good topics that have long-lasting value, I will pump them after a while some time.

This is informative thread and it has all the answers that one need to get started with this forum. Appreciate all your efforts to create a thread like this. I can feel how you might have searched through whole forum to get the proper links and gather it together.

I’m so impressed with “bitcoin button” tag which was launched back in 2012. It made me think why they did not added more symbols into the repository.

Reading through different threads is like traveling back in time and see how they were making conversations with each other to develop the forum as we see it today..Great job!

Yeah, typos. Of course I do sometimes. Updated!

I really hope this thread gets to stay up and gets regular historic updates such as those that answers some major questions by providing links to its resource on the forum. I was thinking it should have been on Meta but I realised its more useful here, as beginners who never coexisted with most of these changes are the ones that needs to be more aware of how they came to be, the opportunities available to them and restrictions too. A periodic bump of this thread would be in order, as its clearly very useful to those having a difficulty in using the forum search button and might find the contents of this thread to come handy.

I try myself to keep it up-to-date, but sometimes I know about update but I am not available at that moment. Later, I forgot to update OP.

If you or anyone knows of something is missing here, please ping me for update. Much appreciated! This way, you will also contribute as asset of a forum.  Cheesy

I do bump it regularly, but not too often. Perhaps, periodic bump should be 3 months, 6 months as I don't want to flood Meta board with my bump. In the past, people complained about it and I think it makes sense.

Wow! It is in Meta, how did I get there or how did I come by that mix up! Here I was thinking something else!
Perhaps that's my thought on what board I feel suits more better as I think, most of these informations are more lacking with the newbies although, I can admit that there are a lot myself that I didn't know off and I've come to appreciate this thread for providing answers.

In the end, where ever it is, those seeking it have got chances to see it as threads on meta aren't easily flushed. Nice one still.

I came to the Forum in the year 2021 December. Even as I registered in the forum as that time I was not active for about 2 months. And it is recently that I found out the origin of bitcointalk from my reading threads.

As for the Forum domain name, Satoshi said, the former sourceforge.net was charged to bitcointalk.org and some of the threads from the sourceforge website were transferred to the new site (bitcointalk.org). Now I like to know the reason of changing the former to the later. I am also asking this question because a student in my class asked this question and I have not answered the question.
For the Forum administration: Satoshi created the site in 2008 and lunched it in 2009, then Theymos, Gavin Andersen, and Sirus promoted the site to the maximum level till date. Sirius took over from Satoshi Nakamoto. From the above analogy, I came to the conclusion that the site (bitcoin) was created by a group of people.

And as for the ranking system. November 2009 to January 2018 no activity was used to rank up and as of June 2018 the same year activity system was introduced, and later merit was also introduced. So when the activity and merit were not used in the Forum, what was used to rank up users as of then?

I can not understand your analogy. satoshi created this forum and can give admin role to other members who get trusted by satoshi.

About Bitcoin history, it was discussed in a group namely Cypherpunks but we can not conclude Bitcoin was created by a single person, a group of people, government or any entity.

This is very informative thread and deserves a small bump to stay on the front page. I always say, it is better to revive old threads than to create new ones on the same topic.

I much appreciate your support. It's kinda recognition for my effort put into this topic Wink

Actually, people can create new topics about same issues but ONLY IF
  • Past topics were locked, inactive and can not be updated as OP left the forum, dead, permanently banned etc.
  • That member actually believe his / her new topic is better than old and available one.

Honestly, mostly we witness the first IF but we don't witness the second IF. Similarly in scientific research, if a researcher can not make a new research to answer and solve an issue better than other researchers with published researches, don't try to make a new one.

In addition, to know that there are available topics about one issue, let's use [Guide] Searching effectively

To add to that inactive remark, it's almost always better to create a new thread, unless your post directly contributes to the discussion of that older inactive thread, and quite substantially too. Otherwise, yeah new thread every time, which is usually the case of why we have duplicate threads, which is mostly okay, and not a big deal at all.

Also, technically they don't always have to think it's better, but rather they might not want to participate in a certain thread for x reasons. For example, if it's self moderated etc. That's just one of the reasons, but there's a few legitimate reasons why they might want to create an additional thread, without participating in the current one, and it wouldn't be much of a issue. The above reason being the most popular.

Today I occasionally find this interesting post. It is from a donator member and I am not sure all information is correct. I share it here as a note and maybe theymos or Cryus can share some more information about forum history.

As in OP, I highlighted that I still don't know when Cyrus became a forum admin.

No. There was also Sirius which helped Satoshi immensely with the Bitcoin project in 2009. My knowledge on the history is limited because I was new at the time, but I believe they both trusted theymos to take care of it in 2010. Sirius gave control of the domains to Cobra. theymos and Cyrus run the forum now. That link appears to be a bit behind the times as BadBear isn't an administrator anymore, he doesn't appear to be even a moderator. He last posted in late 2016 and his account was last active on here in spring 2017.

Satoshi left the project over 7 years ago and there's no point in identifying him anymore. Sirius, who was responsible for porting the code to Linux and getting a lot of early interest (even more than Satoshi) eventually decided to leave the project in the hands of those who were interested in taking it further. The forum grew a lot from 2010 to 2013 and even though the signal to noise ratio hasn't always been the best, theymos and Cyrus have done a great job given the limitations of the software. theymos also runs the subreddit which has grown quite well over the years.
