Here is an example:
My best friend doesn't see the advantages of Bitcoin.

When we talk about the currency or mention numbers and quantitates of the asset, the word should be spelt with a lowercase b.

Here is an example:
I sent my best friend 1 bitcoin as a birthday gift.

Do you pay attention to this while you are posting on the forum?

I think this is about difference in semantics. The difference is not closely felt but with the example I see that the first is pointing to the name Bitcoin and the second is about the digital currency.
To the second example, it is particularly about the spendable coin, fractions , example 0.002btc
Semantics is indeed a good explanation because it talks about general concept of something. I don't really care in a sense that things are still the same. There are existing misconceptions already such as Bitcoin represents the whole cryptocurrency industry. That's how popularity works, but in this case it is a a difference between a concept and amount. I don't really get why a discussion still is needed in such topic lol.

BIG WINNER!

Bitcoin is the technology or the blockchain. When you talk about coins on the Bitcoin blockchain, you use bitcoin.

The thing is, they don't appear red in my Grammarly when I tried to post both words it seems like both of them are correct
Both of them are grammatically correct, so your Grammarly app wouldn't be able to mark either of the two as a mistake. It's just the meaning that is different.

You can use both options. Can anyone forbid you to do this?
Is that what you understood from this thread? That there is a law, or that I am proposing there should be one? Bloody hell.

As I was completing a survey about an hour ago, there was some mention about the distinction between Bitcoin spelt with capital B, and bitcoin with a lowercase b. Although I have heard about this before, and I usually pay a lot of attention to spelling and punctuation, I have to admit that I have totally forgotten about this.

When we talk about Bitcoin as a blockchain, payment method, or a service, we are supposed to spell the word with an uppercase B.

Here is an example:
My best friend doesn't see the advantages of Bitcoin.

When we talk about the currency or mention numbers and quantitates of the asset, the word should be spelt with a lowercase b.

Here is an example:
I sent my best friend 1 bitcoin as a birthday gift.

Good post! It is good to learn new information or clarify something, and of course it is great when people use different words or abbreviations correctly. But very often people communicating do not pay too much attention to such things. Because in my opinion this nuance of the using Bitcoin or bitcoin, or BTC even does not influence on the meaning of yhe text greatly in fact. It is like you will write Ethereum or ethereum, or ETH. Or something like Dollar or dollar, or $. Or something like Number or number and so on. It is the same like "I am going to" or "gonna"... Of course I try to use Bitcoin/bitcoin/BTC correctly in most cases, but not always. May be for some article or website information it is very important really, but for ordinary communication between forumers it will not play substantial role. Because the most important is the content of the message to my mind.

Does this mean that Bitcoin has a good place in our world? It has become a name of many different objects that were newly created from 2008. No doubt that Bitcoin has changed the world in some scales. Blockchain, Bitcoin - what awesome inventions  Roll Eyes

Though I never think about this carefully but after reading your threads, I have realized many things

In my opinion, this is only in writing. They make B and b in the first letter.
Why do I say that ?
Since 4 years ago I knew bitcoin, I never heard of any difference about BITCOIN with the first letter B or b
But I also don't know if anyone thinks it is different. For me, the difference in the first letter as you mentioned above has no effect.

Uuuhm Roll Eyes I hardly pay attention to that. Whenever I am writing something that has to do with Bitcoin, no matter how I put it, whether it’s small letter 'B' or capital letter 'B', people always understand it.

It’s just like the two statements you used as an example, whether the B's on the Bitcoin word is in small or capital letter, people will understand what you’re trying to say. But it’s still good that you pointed this out and I have gotten to know about it, next time when I’m writing about Bitcoin I will know how to put my words.

Same here! Well, I know about it before when I was just starting here in the forum. But I guess it didn't matter much if you use any of it anyway so I guess I just kinda disregarded it and didn't make much a big deal out of it.

Whenever I post a response with the word bitcoin in it, no one tells me that I should write it with a capital letter or whatsoever so I assume they already understand what I mean. But even though it's not such a big issue, I'm still glad that it was discussed 'cause it surely made many of us realize and recall the difference between them.

Do you pay attention to this while you are posting on the forum?
Even I just came to my senses and found out about this.
So the use of capital letters will depend on the context.
So far, I just write about what I wrote. Commonly, only used upper case for the starter of a sentence and then will be in lower case, or even I don't pay attention anymore to the use of B in upper or lower case. New for me.

But, if most people don't know about this, will it really influence the meaning of the word "Bitcoin/bitcoin"?

Honestly, for me, it doesn't matter anyway whatever you use, and personally, i don't even pay so much attention to it when typing bitcoin or Bitcoin.

I guess the B is better or maybe BTC at some point since this is available in the forum.

When we talk about Bitcoin as a blockchain, payment method, or a service, we are supposed to spell the word with an uppercase B.

When we talk about the currency or mention numbers and quantitates of the asset, the word should be spelt with a lowercase b.

Maybe the difference between the two is not really that important so anyone could just use Bitcoin or bitcoin in general. So in the end it is still understandable when explained here in the forum.

Nobody will tell you that you wrote it wrong. Many have never heard about the difference, others don't care, so when you combine all that -  It's not really a big deal, but an interesting observation. It's all based on all old discussion, very few people follow this unwritten rule.

Would be interesting to investigate whether Satoshi himself made this distinction while posting. Or the Bitcoin developers who worked on the project at the beginning.

Thanks for the information but bitcoin will be always bitcoin. Well, honestly I don't give attention to any of this as long as we understand what it means. IMO, 3 years in my forum, it's not a big deal discussing with anyone here since they're getting what we mean by our statements.

Things are getting complicated and I don't want to make terms be complicated also.

As long as your thoughts about bitcoin was understandable, it's fine but still, it's a good find that there are differences between bitcoin and Bitcoin.

In general internet conversations I could care less how Bitcoin is spelled. That said, as others have pointed out, when writing a technical article yes there *is* a difference which depends on if you are talking about the currency itself (Bitcoin) or the unit of currency (bitcoin).

The only thing that matters is that when folks - especially newbs - talk about it, they MUST be talking about BTC and not some alt crap coin. Far too often folks talk about them (alts) and call them "Bitcoin" as if they are the same thing and of course they are NOT.

Think sparkling wines: Despite them all being bubbly only those from the Champagne region of France are "Champagne", the rest are just wannbes. Perhaps very good but still not Champagne. Same with crypto coins - only 1 is Bitcoin. The others are all alts.

Cool, I don't know there's any difference between the term bitcoin and Bitcoin. For me as long as you understand each other here in the forum, it doesn't matter how they spell. Some members don't really talk about it and point out the words used incorrectly. It doesn't even influence any discussions and I don't personally pay attention to what word I'm using. In the end, the important thing is content of what you're trying to say.

Bitcoin had been classified as a currency and all currencies are written with the uppercase, think about any fiat currencies written with lowercase, you can't find any, so currency is a noun and all noun starts with uppercase.
Definitely, the use of the uppercase "Bitcoin" is appropriate to use in our everyday life.

It's an interesting grammatical rule, but I always write bitcoin with a lowercase *b*, never thought about this difference.
I think as we are talking informally at an internet public forum it's not an issue at all, but if I were going to write a formal essay, article or something else like that I would take it in consideration for sure.

And yes, depending where and to who you are writing a text rules like this are a must, so people should care about it.
It really matters how you spell bitcoin.

Do you pay attention to this while you are posting on the forum?

I must say it was quite interesting getting to just know about this like right now. I had no idea but usually notice the difference when I come across articles on bitcoin. Usually I just thought it had no significant but after reading your threads the pictures are all coming back. Still though, don't think it's worth any attention as we can simply decode what the message is trying to say without having to indicate if the writer night as a blockchain or an assest.

Also we have very large audience of non- English speaking country in the space and most don't have english as their official language, how then do they come into this conversation since they won't be making use of the english language.

Yes, i talked about this before. Coins use small caps, this is very important when the coin has the name of someone. Bitcoin the project, the network, etc. and bitcoin would be the coin itself, like you explained.

A good example for this is the satoshi, a hundred million of those make a bitcoin. The creator of Bitcoin (and this forum) is Satoshi.

There is a catch, the grammatical rules say that you have to use a capital when starting a new paragraph, so when you want to refer to the coin, you should try to add some extra word, so you would say "The bitcoin value is 16k" rather than Bitcoin value is 16k, because Bitcoin is the project, code, network, blockchain, technology yadda.

But this is a rule of thumb for all currencies. Always use small caps.

Yes I know Bitcoin and bitcoin difference but it does not matter unless you like to really specify the right use of grammar. Here in our place where English is not our primary language, most or all people I know here does not matter when it comes to using the right word. Bitcoin is a noun and that itself could be use to name the system.while.bitcoin is a system unit wherein the smallest unit is satoshi.
