For me it's the whitepaper. In essence, you can see their intentions from reading their whitepaper. You can also spot unsuspecting things from the team by reading the whitepaper. The biggest factor for me when buying an alt coin is how popular it is. I tend to look at the average daily volume traded in that coin voer the last 90-180 days. If there is almost no volume in the past and the trading only picked up recently it might be an indication of more investors swichting into that coin. So if the price is too high now, it might be better to wait a few month again and hope for a lower price again once all the short term traders swichted out of the coin again. Also looking at past traded volume in a coin can help give an indication on how fast you could liquidate your positions again.
