The DCA is a proven best strategy for every kind of investor but some investors once in awhile defer to buy the dip or lump sum by their own decision. What’s important in all these is remaining consistent and investing with discretionary money.

You are convoluting lump sum and buying the dip.

They are not the same.

Guys might ONLY have opportunties to lump sum when they come accross some extra money, or otherwise, they could free up some money from some other investment that they have.

Whenever a lump sum comes available, there still should be a consideration about the extent to which the lump sum will be used to 1) buy right away, 2) defer by time (DCA) and/or 3) defer by price (buy dips that might not end up happening).

A great thing about lump sums is that it gives options that may well go beyond the usual income situation that a guy might have on a weekly/monthly basis.

No no no no!!!. You probably misread my sentence, I’m not complicating or convoluting them, I know they’re not the same thing. I only meant that investors who practice DCA may sometimes deviate from their regular DCA and decide to buy the dip OR lump sum depending on their own decision and the situation at the moment.

Not that he misread your sentence, rather you Said that "some investors once in a while defer to buy the dip or lump sum by their own decision" how? A person can not just wake up and then decide to switch from regular DcAing to lump suming when he or she does not have enough discretionary funds to do that. It is only when investors figure out that they have enough discretionary funds available that they mostly think about trying new methods and that's exactly what jayjuangee was trying to say. and i quite agree with him, because an investor that does not have enough discretionary funds would rather stick to regular DcAing . because they wouldn't want to try something they are not sure if they can maintain it for longer time.

while lumpsum can make sense when you already have a good amount of discretionary income ready to invest. The important thing is to have a clear plan instead of always waiting for one big price crash before buying.
Is it all lumpsum investors that waits for a big crash before they buy? Of course no, waiting for a crash to happen first before buying can lead to missing the opportunity of buying at a certain and because those kind of investors understands thiis, they do not really wait for a crash to happen first before buying. I don't disagree with you that there are people that wait for that crash but not every whale investor does so and it might interest you to know that some investors that use DCA still look at price and wait for a dip to happen first before they can buy and the funny thing is that most time price will not dip to their expected level. For example, those people that have set a limit order to buy from $50k, price got to $58k and bounced to $82k+, if price never got back to level again, they have missed out.
Apparently, any form of waiting for a price crash before buying Bitcoin is no longer in the scope of lump sum rather it is buy the dip, buying when there is a crash is good especially when you are not waiting for it to happen first before buying, there is something off about waiting because it may likely not happen and at that point those buying without waiting becomes more advantageous over those that are waiting, of course those waiting for a big crash are wasting time that they should have used to buy bitcoin, and some times they can lose interest in buying again when price didn't dip to their expected level.

The aim of what we’re always discussing here and what JayJuanGee is advising is so guys can be able to make better choices/decisions with their investments no matter the level of their incomes and how it comes.

The DCA is a disciplined approach to investing in bitcoin for the long term while the lump sum and the buy the dip are alternative side strategies that an investor can choose to employ when they have the funds and circumstances to do so.

Before deviating into waiting to buy the dip, an investor needs to ask themselves some question like how often have they been buying bitcoin and how is their bitcoin portfolio, have they accumulated a decent amount of bitcoin to confidently say that they have achieved their accumulation target or perhaps over accumulation. If they can’t provide any good answers to this question then they don’t need to deviate from their regular buying of bitcoin with the DCA into waiting for a dip they aren’t even sure of when it will happen.

It is only going to be reasonable and advisable for investors who have accumulated a reasonable amount of bitcoin and reached their accumulation target to decide to wait or deviate from their regular DCA to waiting to accumulate during dips and not when an investor has not accumulated any reasonable amount of bitcoin because there’s every tendency that such an investor might end up being a low or no coiner as the dip is something that may or may not occur. In the same vein, an investor can also decide to mix his accumulation pattern depending on his financial position such as lump sum buy especially when an additional income comes to them while they are regularly buying with the DCA, they can decide to lump sum buy with it, and also if the dip happens along the line that they are buying regularly with the DCA, they can still take advantage of the opportunity and buy even more and HODL for such a low price.

You have been registered on the forum for nearly 3 years (since November 2023) and what have you been doing during that time since you have been here?  Have you been fucking around trying to figure out dips or have you been ongoingly and persistently buying bitcoin on a regular and consistent basis?
@JayJuanGee
Although I have been on this forum for three long years, just because I have not been active here for three years does not mean that I have not invested in Bitcoin.
Actually, I started investing in Bitcoin around 2018 and since then I have been increasing my Bitcoin holdings. However, I became active on this forum again when I needed more knowledge about Bitcoin. Especially so that I can share my knowledge with everyone.

Well good. I am glad that you have had more time to be involved in bitcoin and even to be able to increase your bitcoin stash, yet still some of my same questions would apply whether you got started buying bitcoin 3 years ago or 8 years ago, and from my own perspective, the better of the strategies remain ongoing accumulation through buying and not fucking around with selling and/or trying to trade or even fucking around with trying to time the market.

Of course, if you had more time to accumulate bitcoin, then your decisions could be affected by how much you had been able to put into bitcoin, how many bitcoin you had accumulated and some guys might have had been able to front load their bitcoin investment rather than merely relying on their monthly, weekly (or whatever is your normal pay period).

And, yeah, of course, in a forum like this we have abilities to share ideas, and we do not necessarily need to agree, yet of course, at the same time, since I had created this as a self-moderated thread, I do prefer to try to stick to themes that relate to my own various investment ideas.. so for me it can be a wee bit frustrating if I get the sense that we might be getting drug into areas of conversation that I might consider to be trading or even talking about theory that may not necessarily come off as practical to me in regards to the themes of this thread.

Anyway, it is true that there is no need to wait for the price to drop, because we have seen how Bitcoin has corrected in the past years. We do not need to be afraid of investing in Bitcoin, because I think that even if the price of Bitcoin is completely dumped, it is still very likely to pump up later.
Anyway, I do not want to confuse anyone here, I just wanted to share my knowledge here.

Nothing wrong with sharing ideas and even striving to get clarifications and/or even sometimes coming up with our own examples.

If you glance through the thread, I am frequently suggesting that I think that it tends to take guys a whole hell of a lot of time to really build up their bitcoin portfolio and to get through their accumulation phase... and I really think that ongoing buying of bitcoin is helpful, yet sure at the same time, it can be difficult for guys to both ongoingly maintain discretionary funds so that they can both ongoingly buy bitcoin and also ongoingly build and strengthen their cashflow management, and at the same time, building bitcoin and strengthening cashflows is not the only thing in life, since guys also will have some money that they are also regularly using for discretionary spending, so there is a bit of an ongoing balance, even with guys who have ongoingly strong discretionary funds, in terms of how much priority to give to each of the three categories of investing, saving and discretionary consumption.

Honestly, I believe that if we have an idea about Bitcoin and we have patience, then we can invest in Bitcoin for the long term. But at that time, we have to use money that we can afford to lose and so that there is no bad effect on our Bitcoin holding in the future. But I have created another emergency fund for this, so that if I need any urgent money in the future, I can solve my problem from there. So that there is no bad effect on my Bitcoin investment.

I tend to think of the bare minimum back up funds as emergency funds, so that guys are going to set up their emergency funds in such a way that they don't tap into those funds at all unless they run out of all other funds.  Of course some back up funds might have more flexibility or you might even designate those funds for specific kinds of purposes, and I consider those kinds of funds as reserve funds, yet of course, if a real emergency happens in which income had gone down and/or basic expenses had gone up, even your reserve funds might end up getting used in the place of emergency funds and even prior to the use of emergency funds merely because you have them and merely because your shortage of income and/or your increase in basic expenses had left you with no choice but to use whatever funds that you had that were in excess of your emergency funds prior to tapping into your emergency funds.

Sure both the categorization of funds and even the choices about which funds to spend first or even the giving of priority to not tap into your bitcoin, these are personal choices, and guys are going to draw lines in different ways, and no matter how they draw their lines, it is most likely better (and perhaps best?) if they are able to build up their bitcoin holdings and even their various back up funds in such a way that they tend to always have options, since one of the more frustrating and stressful things for anyone tends to be when they get into situations in which they have no options... and maybe they have to spend from funds, whether emergency funds or bitcoin in ways that they did not want to do and at a time that they did not want to happen.

So I think if someone wants to invest in Bitcoin, then if they buy Bitcoin using the DCA method without looking at the market, then they will definitely benefit in the future.

Sure, any of us longer term bitcoin investors likely both stay in bitcoin and we got into bitcoin in the first place based on a bit of a presumption that it is better for us to build up our bitcoin holdings and to invest into bitcoin rather than investing anywhere else, and so in that regard we may well have both a presumption that bitcoin prices are going to tend to trend upwards, and at the same time, we understand that there is no guarantee that bitcoin has to go up, so in that regard, we try to figure out a bitcoin investment allocation amount that we consider to be reasonable under the totality of the circumstances, and perhaps when we are new to bitcoin we might be a bit hesitant and unsure, yet the longer that we invest into bitcoin and we study bitcoin and perhaps bolster our own cashflow management, we also might start to gravitate more towards more aggressive investing into bitcoin, and surely I frequently suggest that guys should strive to try to be able to invest into bitcoin as aggressively as they are able to do without overdoing it, since surely no one wants to end up losing in their bitcoin investment based on their being correct about the direction of the bitcoin price, yet their failure to build up their bitcoin stack as well as they could have based on their own screw ups and their own going too far and then losing bitcoin because they did not manage their bitcoin and/or their cashflows well.

[edited out]

Mixing both strategies makes sense. It's not like the lump sum will done frequently, its only when you have a spare cash that isn't of no use, then there no problem throwing it into bitcoin.  Keeping in mind that you are still accumulating with your DCA and your backup or funds are in place.

The only thing that often of makes some investors avoid doing lump sum , is if after buying bitcoin at a particular price and the price keeps dropping. Seeing your investment go down immediately can make you feel like you bought at the wrong time. But an investor whose focus is on long term won't care much, since short term prices fluctuates alot. What is more important is to make sure you have everything in place before doing lump sum . By that,  I mean one should look into their finances maybe their bills, adding more money into their backup funds and other reserves etc.

One of the reasons that I frequently suggest that if guys get lump sum amounts that come available to them, then they should at least consider the three different ways of buying bitcoin with the amount that they authorize to buy bitcoin: 1) buying right away, 2) defer by time (DCA) and/or 3) buy dips that might not happen.

The buy dip portion of the lump sum can come in handy for who consider that buying a bunch of bitcoin at a set price is risky, so then they save some portion of that lump sum for buying dips that may or may not end up happening, and if some form of dip ended up happening, then their buy  the dip amounts are triggered, and if the dips do not end up happening, then the BTC price ended up going up and they still profit from whatever lump sum portion that they had put into bitcoin with the lump sum amount that they ended up having and allocating towards buying right away.  Accordingly, both DCA and lump sum end up serving as a hedge to the portion that was bought right away, and the buying on the dip portion is specifically tailored towards specifically buying with the allocated amount in the event that the BTC price dropped after the portion of the lump sum had been used to buy right away.

1) Self-Custody is a right.  Resist being labelled as: "non-custodial" or "un-hosted."  2) ESG, KYC & AML are attack-vectors on Bitcoin to be avoided or minimized.  3) How much alt (shit)coin diversification is necessary? if you are into Bitcoin, then 0%......if you cannot control your gambling, then perhaps limit your alt(shit)coin exposure to less than 10% of your bitcoin size...Put BTC here: bc1q49wt0ddnj07wzzp6z7affw9ven7fztyhevqu9k

I totally get your point, but the best decision is just for folks to DCA... Looking at it from one perspective it could look good to buy when there is a crash especially when one isn't actually waiting for the crash to happen before they buy.. But then again the long term implications of such an habit is that it could eventually make you so dependent on dips that you could even stop or reduce your consistent accumulation habit just to hunt for cheaper entry price...Infact that is just one of the implication...Another implication could very be the ideology that every time Bitcoin goes up in price that you are buying at an expensive price, and over the long run, this very mentality can even lead you to start basing your aggressiveness on how low the prices of Bitcoin is, and such is something that can slow down the very pace of your accumulation...

The bone of contention here is that dips you expect isn't always guaranteed to occur at that price that you expect, and so I think DCA is just the best.. So regardless of the existence of dips or not, DCA should always be your go-to strategy since it very well encourages consistency above delayed accumulation...

Honestly, if we consider these things with a cold mind, then it proves that if we continue to increase our Bitcoin holdings little by little using the DCA method without looking at the Bitcoin market and waiting for a good market to find it, then of course, as our Bitcoin holdings grow, we will be able to sell some of the profits there.
Actually, we cannot predict the market accurately, but after considering various aspects, we can make some assumptions at some point that the market may go to this level in the future.
For example, I have assumed that Bitcoin will not reach $200k after a long few years from now, which makes no sense.

However, we believe that those who deposited in Bitcoin many years ago are now making a lot of profit. I have a guru who started investing in Bitcoin since 2016. He buys Bitcoin little by little every week or every month two to three times. To be honest, his Bitcoin holdings stood at about $2k after a year.  And he told me about his profits that he had saved a very good amount of profit from Bitcoin by 2026. But even then he did not stop investing in his Bitcoin, he is still continuously increasing his Bitcoin holdings.

So I agree with you that we do not need to wait to invest in Bitcoin, when the price of Bitcoin reached a maximum height of 126k dollars, if we had invested in Bitcoin at that time, then we would have definitely benefited in the future.

Since I have been investing in Bitcoin for many years and I have chosen this form to gain some more knowledge about Bitcoin. So I do not want to disappoint anyone here, I just want to share my own knowledge and the knowledge of others.

A crash has already happened, you have discretionary money, and you bought some extra Bitcoin, and this may not be a problem . But the problem is this behavior can easily create a new rule in the investor's mind that buying Bitcoin at a low price is the best strategy overall. Many people try to buy Bitcoin in the dip, along with DCA. If the price continues to rise in the future, then the mindset can be created to stop buying Bitcoin and buy Bitcoin in larger amounts when the price falls. To me, this is the biggest problem with the Dip oriented mindset. DIP buying not only teaches an investor to look for lower prices, but can also teach an investor to automatically find higher prices unattractive. But in the case of long term investment in Bitcoin, the price at which Bitcoin is being bought today will be as dip in the long term and give additional profit. Therefore, it would not be right to change decisions or change mentality by following its price changes in the short term. And it is unpredictable whether a perfect dip will ever come, so if someone keeps $500 as DIP buying fund and later the price of Bitcoin increased a lot then he will not get the opportunity to buy Bitcoin at lower price. Rather, it was more logical for him to do DCA regularly.

Very nice takeaway here. I like the way you put it that bitcoin accumulation should not be treated as only financial priority. Someone can consistently buy bitcoin while maintaining an emergency fund, managing cash flow properly and keeping some money for normal life expenses. This is definitely what most people that just came into bitcoin investment find really difficult to balance.

Because finding sustainable balance is really difficult if you’re not properly oriented. like if someone put much of their discretionary income into bitcoin, they may end up under funding their savings or cash reserves. On the other hand, if everything goes towards consumption, accumulation then becomes really difficult. That’s why a long term approach is therefore more about having a plan that can be maintain consistently rather than trying to maximise bitcoin purchases every month or week.

Those waiting for the dip to buy bitcoin are just wasting their time and dont even know what they are doing. The question to ask about waiting to buy bitcoin in dip is how much bitcoin would one buy if the dip comes?  And how often they will buy the period of time the dip will last and if what they want to buy is enough to hodl? Many people who wait to buy bitcoin are just decieving their self and it is only few who buy in large amount in the dip.
Buying bitcoin consistently is the best way for anyone to buy bitcoin because many people who reasons to buy in the dip thry just think one sided and they think it is good to buy the dip because it is cheap. They dont think if accumulating Bitcoin,  they dont even know every bitcoin bought at any price can still add good value by hodling it.

It's wrong for you to start selling part of your bitcoin during your accumulation stage because it will slow you down from reaching your bitcoin target at the right time. Just because you are in profit does not mean that you should sell part of it and take profit because that's what traders do. Any long term bitcoin investor that sells for the sake of profit when he hasn't reached his bitcoin target is a trader and not an investor.

This is because you might end up selling more than expected and start thinking on how to time the market and buy cheaper which has made you lose focus on keeping your DCA ongoing persistent and consistent overtime till you reach your bitcoin goal. As a brand new investor, you shouldn't think about profit but focus more on growing your bitcoin stash with DCA overtime. It's till you have reached your over accumulation stage that you think of selling.

Even if you want to sell, you need to use the sustainable withdrawal method to take little profit once in a while either by using a particular time or when bitcoin reach a particular price.

Why would you want to sell some of your assets for little profit @Gragebox? I doubt if you have been able to accumulate a reason amount of Bitcoin, and so you are moved by some sort of growth in your portfolio and you want to sell? Only traders think this way, because they are carried away by immediate gains and don't think of long term HODL of Bitcoin.

Selling for short time gains make no sense to me because Bitcoin accumulates value if we Hold for longer period. Investors aren't moved by little pump in market price, not at all and I doubt if you are an investor. From the way you sound, it's clear that you are a trader who is in the market for little profit.

The idea of this thread by JJG is clearly for long term investors, who try to HODL the BTC while consistently staying in the market so long as you are still in your accumulation stage or early stages of your investment. There is no need to push for selling at an early stage. Just buy and HODL, the real gains would come if you HODL much longer.

How much Bitcoin shouldn't be a question since the amount anyone wants to buy or invest with shouldn't be anyone's business, they’re msking a mistake that needs correction and the right question to help correct the impression of waiting for the dip before they buy is if they can get the right timing of the market.

Bitcoin is volatile so it would be tough for anyone to perfectly time the market, if it was possible then their won't be any need to ask people to buy consistently or adopt the DCA method, infact that would've been the perfect strategy if timing the market accurately was possible so if you're adviding someone on a mistake, make the person see reasons why what he or she is doing is wrong instead of weighing the amount they intend investing with the wrong strategy.

Selling is a wrong investment approach my dear. There is absolutely no need to sell because of of little up climb of the market price. Bwe know we can't predict the market when it falls or when it will clin again, but judging from past happenings, Bitcoin has proven to be a store of Value and will sometimes in the future create a new ATH market price.

So if an investor gets carried away by little profits now and sells, what happens in the next coming months or years when Bitcoin climbs more, maybe it hits $100k-$150 or above, will he keep selling everyday till his portfolio is empty?

The best approach to Bitcoin investment has always been long term investment plan, and I think you should emulate that and not selling some due to little profit.

it is only investor who did not save some money for this moment will not be able to buy the dip. However, preparing for the dip does not mean an investor will keep or save a large amount from their discretionary income at a time no, the money for dip is accumulated (it is saved little by little till..) so do not get it wrong.
Saving for the dip as a guy who has already acquired a big stash of BTC and close to his accumulation target isn't bad, since he already has a lot of bitcoin, but as a guy still very much early in his accumulation journey, you don't necessarily need such practices, it can be unnecessarily distracting to you and before you know it, you may find yourself being overly whimpy in your periodic buys and focusing more on your preparation for the dip, which is still the same thing as using the waiting strategy and the waiting strategy is discouraged for beginners and those who have not yet acquired a descent stash for themselves.

It is a better approach to follow up your DCA with as much seriousness as possible, buying as aggressively as you can, without overdoing it, in order to get further ahead in your accumulation journey, then if you bump into some free cash, have a work bonus or some cash gift in a dip, you can decide to use it to lump sum on the dip or frontload your buys. It is important you desist from any practices that might distract your focus on your consistency in enlarging your portfolio when you are still early in bitcoin investment.

The only saving from your discretionary income that becomes very important while you're following up your DCA is the one you put into building your backup funds. You can consider those savings important to shield your portfolio from being tampered in the case of an emergency and/or other discretionary consumptions.

Selling your bitcoin before getting to over accumulation is totally wrong and you will end up committing a blunder by doing that, however you’re meant to buy bitcoin for 1 or 2 circle considering how long you feel you want to buy bitcoin, the target shouldn’t be about profit when you’re still in your accumulation stages you should also understand that profit isn’t guaranteed while buying and accumulating bitcoin, which is why you have to focus on buying and accumulating bitcoin instead of selling your profits, maybe you’re going to tell us if you’re only interested in making quick profit, which would completely make you a Trader.

This is a wrong practice, capping off profits from your bitcoin portfolio is trading rather than investing, you should allow your stash to keep growing as you add more to it with consistency in your buys. selling some for profits means you are actually monitoring your portfolio for quick profit taking when you should be more focused on enlarging it and drawing closer to your accumulation target.
If you continue this way, your portfolio might not be growing and you would remain a no coiner for long when you should've had a descent stash if you focused on investing rather than trading your coins for little profits.
Bigger profits are possible when you hold and allow your portfolio to keep growing and the bitcoin price increase compounds profits on your portfolio after a long period of time.

But even then he did not stop investing in his Bitcoin, he is still continuously increasing his Bitcoin holdings.
Your friend has some good qualities of a real investor, his investment has a higher possibility of profitability and success as he continues to enlarge his portfolio and hold, without selling. The best way to go about bitcoin investment is a long-term approach, you should not take quick profits since you'll be depreciating your stash by doing so.

The DCA is a disciplined approach to investing in bitcoin for the long term while the lump sum and the buy the dip are alternative side strategies that an investor can choose to employ when they have the funds and circumstances to do so.

hope you understand that the DCA strategy capture both buying the dip right, as for buying in lump sum, it is not a regular strategy stuff for investors, because we can only buy in lump sum when we have the money to buy so, will I say your words made it look confusing, accumulating with the DCA method and deciding to increase your buying capacity as the price dump, is not bad as long as you have what it takes to do so and wouldn't allow it to affect your DCA continuously, but I'm of the opinion that, we should prioritize buying efficiently with the DCA method, instead of trying to do it the other way which might be obstructed due to unavailability of funds to carry on.

It is a personal question for those who are making this mistake , because waiting for the dip dont worth it. The reason why people who wait to buy bitcoin needs to look into this well is because after they wait to what will be the next? The time they waited to buy the dip and the amount they used in buying if it is worth waiting. Most people wait to buy the dip and at the end they just buy only small amount, which they would have done better if they understood accumulating of bitcoin no how small but to be consistent.

The aim of what we’re always discussing here and what JayJuanGee is advising is so guys can be able to make better choices/decisions with their investments no matter the level of their incomes and how it comes.

The DCA is a disciplined approach to investing in bitcoin for the long term while the lump sum and the buy the dip are alternative side strategies that an investor can choose to employ when they have the funds and circumstances to do so.

Am investor that is using DCA to buy bitcoin can also make use of the other strategies like buying the dip or even lump sum buying while DCA remains their main strategy. So they don't necessarily needs to deviate from DCA in other to buy the dip or lump sum. The important thing is if they have an extra cash to buy lump sum or to buy the dip after their regular DCA. So deviating from DCA strategy, may mean not continuing with it, which seems to be wrong.
Yes, DCA strategy gives that privilege of combo strategy without deviation from DCAing. As DCA bell rings, you accumulate for that date and when there's a dip you buy lump sum or with decided amount. Deviation as agbam said would mean stoping DCA strategy to hold on to another strategy but that is not the case in this combo. This combination of strategies only means investor buying aggressively (that's an additional accumulation to DCAing) without deviation from DCAing.
Strategy combo is an advantage of DCA strategy which is made possible by keeping extra discretionary funds to take advantage of the dip while actively DCAing without deviation.

Sometimes they might think they've succeeded in buying the DIP but you actually look at it you will sometimes find that from the time they started waiting for the DIP to when they finally bought, the price of bitcoin has gone high enough that a DIP then was still higher that when they started waiting so while they may been telling themselves that waiting was worth it, a careful examination will tell that it was the wrong choice.
Personally I will never see the point in waiting for a DIP as an individual investor, especially with the DCA still there, why wait when I can buy right there and then.
