Same situation happened with the China Super league years back when they were pumping money into signing top European stars players that were closed to retirement age just to create attention from the public to their league thinking they can measure with the competition with European top leagues in terms of views. I also think the purpose of Saudi Arabia investing heavily by bringing legendary players to their league is to create a football culture like in Europe in the Saudi League. I do not deny that the arrival of foreign players like Ronaldo or Benzema will make local players become bench players and that will affect their performance when playing for Saudi Arabia. But I think that is only true to a limited degree. No doubt that players can improve if they are training and playing with top players from Europe, but most of the time those European top players go there at the end of their careers and it is a huge difference if a player has gone through the best football education during their entire career compared to players who spend their career in Saudi Arabia and now get to play a few seasons with former world stars.

Ronaldo is perhaps not the best example because he is an exception, but most of these overpaid top players who go to play in the SPL have spent their whole life with great coaches and staff from very early on. That is a different ball game in my opinion.
