I have been motivated by every person here who has in one way or another promoted bitcoin in their locality. This year, there’s been more bitcointalk members teaching bitcoin outside the forum and accepting bitcoin payment in their businesses. I’m happy I am ending the year trying something new and unique in my business.




We are a beauty, cosmetic and personal care shop ( pedicure and manicure, lashes extension, facials, micro blading) in Nigeria.



To be honest, I was hesitant to do this because I thought it wouldn’t work in my profession. But there’s no downside to trying, so I did. After browsing the internet for a good bitcoin sign, I settle for this one. The sign is on my Secretary/cashier’s desk next to the card that has my bank account details. Placing the two together was deliberate because I put a discount on bitcoin making payments in bitcoin cheaper to attract people. The only challenge I face right now is 99% of our customers are female, and most do not have any prior knowledge of bitcoin or cryptocurrency, the ones who do either heard about bitcoin from their partner or social media campaigns but they haven’t given it much thought. It’s popular among the male folk here, I am yet to have a customer pay in bitcoin but it’s good enough to start the conversation. I placed a 10% discount for those who pay in bitcoin and that I think that move prompt my clients to begin asking how they can do so. I’ve had clients ask me to explain to them how Bitcoin works which I am always glad to do. Even my neighbor is curious and is likely to join the crypto fam soon. Though I haven’t had a bitcoin sales, this new addition to my business has added value and a closeness to my relationship with my clients.

We BTC users want merchants in our locality to start accepting BTC payment, while we forget that so many of us in this commuinity are merchants ourselves, so i believe if you are a merchant here, and if BTC is legal in your country and you would not get into any trouble with your government or police, then you should consider accepting BTC in your business. It is easier if one is already a bitcoiner, you would know the best way to accept your money and how to educate your customers.

Despite the fact that your customers are predominantly female, and like you said BTC knowledge is not common amongst them, it might get some of them interested and learn about BTC from here; and from what i know women like going to the beauty and cosmetic shop with their lovers, and we know who usually pays , so male Bitcoiners might use the option of BTC to pay for their partners in your shop. Bitcoin adoption must be done from two sides. Buyers and sellers are two sides of Bitcoin adoption.

If you are using a service, you are a buyer and the seller must accept your bitcoins. Seller also must accept risk of having bitcoins in their balance. The best is a seller must consider bitcoin received from buyers as investment for their business. It is not problem now because not all buyers will use bitcoins as their payment method so a part of bitcoin in a business balance sheet is small and less risky.

In future, if bitcoin adoption is bigger, buyers use bitcoins for payments more regularly and bitcoins become bigger in a business balance sheet, risk can be higher. Fortunately, in future I believe that Bitcoin volatility would be smaller and it makes risk for sellers smaller too.

There are some points that I would like to draw OP's attention to.

Make/order a beautiful frame for the text "Bitcoin is accepted here" with an attractive design and appearance and hang it on the wall in a conspicuous place so that buyers of your services can see it in front of them at the time of payment.

Create (or use ready-made) guides explaining what bitcoin is, how to use it and make transactions. Order from the nearest printing house and distribute to your customers so that they learn how to use btc at least at the initial level. Why else would they need a discount for btc they can't take advantage of. The next time your clients come to you to be prettier, they will already be prepared to pay for the services with bitcoin.

I don't believe so, BTC payment option is more of a second choice, i don't think there is anywhere that BTC payment would be embraced more than fiat. The expectation in my humble opinion shouldn't be for BTC to be the first choice, but for BTC to be a second choice option globally, i think that is the way to go for mass adoption.

One has to first be a bitcoiner before they can spend BTC, but they do not technically have to be holders, as long as they use BTC for any other purpose, even if it is trading, then can surely spend any amount out of what they have to pay for stuffs, it is a matter of choice.

Through the year 2022 we had good level of cryptocurrency acceptance into businesses. In particular we were able to see good number of Bitcointalk community members started to accept bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies into their businesses. This could've given good exposure to bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Through our forum members more people knowing about bitcoin is really good and a must one. Over the year more users have taught people about bitcoin to people who doesn't had knowledge about bitcoin. As a cosmetic shop which is not general to everyone but specific to women, and women who use bitcoin are not much in Nigeria compare to the male counterparts. But one thing I will also advise you to do is to place advertisement banners in social media and billboards around the cities close to you. There are some females that are using bitcoin are unknown but with your advertisement they will be informed to come to your shop. This is how the process will begin and work for you. Don't cross your heart or make an oath on that. You never can tell how people react to the invention of things and that's why on the hindsight we tend to regret actions we didn't take. A few years (over a decade, anyway) I can recollect making a suggestion to a paper company I worked for to also have a hard copy version of what it ran online, owing to how Nigerians reacted to online stuff then towards newspapers. There was low patronage for stuff like that then. Now fast forward to date, we know how voracious Nigerians have become towards online news and gists. How many people buy hard copy newspapers this day in Nigeria? Most people now get their news and gists online, on soft copy.

There is hope for bitcoin. It doesn't go unnoticed. Your clients will be curious to know about bitcoin sooner than later because you are indirectly programming their subconscious mind to think about bitcoin. I'd advice you do a pamphlet that explains the basics of bitcoin, what it is all about and how to use it. Teach your staff about bitcoin so that they can also educate the clients when they ask a question about bitcoin. This is a step in the right direction.

I think there’s no harm in trying to inculcate bitcoin as among the payment methods in your business. I think it’s a plus and always great to have various methods in which a customer could pay for services rendered. I also love the fact that you’re giving out a 10% discount on services if payment is made in bitcoin.

If I could get any form of discount to pay with bitcoin, I know I would jump at that opportunity. I think the discount given would also help stimulate peoples interest in bitcoin even if it’s a little.

You’re partially right, I may lose 10% profit so to speak but I boost sales and gain a stronger customer relationship. This is common business practice, I would normally give discount at the end of the year. This year is different only because the discount are only on bitcoin sales. Also the discount isn’t limited to a number of customers, I plan on running it for a month straight.

Thank you. Bitcoin is popular here because for one it is a good way to hedge the inflation of the naira. However I don’t agree “ every woman” has a man who’s paying their bills, many women are financially independent and live on their own terms

Congratulations.  Accepting BTC is a great step in getting more involved.  Accept it, mine it (or mine shitcoins and trade for BTC immediately with a GPU), spread the word, and keep stacking!  Physical shops accepting Bitcoin is what this community has needed for a long time.  The only Bitcoin accepting shop I've ever seen was on a trip to Vegas, and even that implementation was questionable and not functioning most of the time.  I hope someday I'll be able to use real BTC on chain to make actual purchases in person.  So far those opportunities are few and far between.

I don't see anything wrong in the fact that anyone who has a private business enables their clients to pay in as many ways as possible, because that way they only expand the base of possible customers. If we know that Bitcoin is conceived as a cryptocurrency that enables transactions between private users without the intervention of a third party, then we need as many people as possible who will start to think like that.

I have nothing against anyone who keeps Bitcoin as an investment and tries to fight inflation that way, but I think it is necessary to find the right balance between the investment and what Bitcoin actually is, which is a currency. If the majority of those who own Bitcoin would pay something with it from time to time, then it would be a more than good sign for others to be encouraged and accept Bitcoin in their business.

That's all we can do if we own a business. There might be not that much demand at the moment but the time will come when most customers will see that banner of bitcoin acceptance for their shops and eventually, the number of customers that pays them with bitcoin will increase.
There will be more for sure as this year starts and we shall see that many of them becomes successful both with accepting cash/fiat and mostly, with bitcoin.

That's all we can do if we own a business. There might be not that much demand at the moment but the time will come when most customers will see that banner of bitcoin acceptance for their shops and eventually, the number of customers that pays them with bitcoin will increase.
There will be more for sure as this year starts and we shall see that many of them becomes successful both with accepting cash/fiat and mostly, with bitcoin.

I think it doesn't matter how many places accept bitcoin as payment but how many of their customers pay with bitcoin that matters. If one out of every 100 customer pays with bitcoin then it's not too bad, if it is more than it is great if it is less than it's not good at all.

I personally would love to have a world where we could end up with much more money spent in bitcoin than fiat and we reach to a 2-3% all worlds transactions done in bitcoin type of thing. If that ever happens, it would mean bitcoin is already huge and will happen to be amazing. I know it's not that common at all right now, but it will become very common if we just focus on making it a bit better.

You’re partially right, I may lose 10% profit so to speak but I boost sales and gain a stronger customer relationship. This is common business practice, I would normally give discount at the end of the year. This year is different only because the discount are only on bitcoin sales. Also the discount isn’t limited to a number of customers, I plan on running it for a month straight.

As I said, your idea will definitely attract some of your customers to pay you in bitcoins for a 10% discount. I really think it's a good strategy to increase the number of your customers to use bitcoin as a means of payment, and it's a good idea to limit it to an entire month only.

You make a good argument, it’s always a good option to diversify although I’m not into alts, I think they are far more volatile than bitcoin. Choosing a stable coin is not a easy choice, USDT, BUSD, USDC are scary to me because I worry they may lose their peg.

I think there are more entrepreneurs in Nigeria than civil workers. Getting a white collar job in Nigeria is hard despite your qualifications so most of us have chosen to be our own boss and creating multiple streams of income. That’s the way to survive in Nigeria. Nigeria is one of those underdeveloped or poor countries so people there needs to work hard. One of the ways that they can think of to help their lives is to run a business. Every business do always start small but as soon as they got successful, this will grow eventually. The emergence of cryptos such as Bitcoin is also an asset for them. These people saw a big potential in BTC so they think it will be a good idea to adopt it on their business. Let's only hope that their government is going to be more friendly with cryptos later on.

From the OP's story his business is a beauty shop so it's normal that most of his customers are women. We shouldn't underestimate them because they also do what other most men can do including taking a risk and BTC is already popular now so they heard and use it even before.

Because when people talk about Bitcoin adoption, Ecuador does not come to mind, unlike places like Venezuela, El Salvador, Argentina or Nigeria.
In my opinion sounds very situational, but since you live there I guess you have a better idea than I do about the utility of Bitcoin in your community.
Since Ecuador uses the USD as currency, I would not think the general population would immediately jump into accept BTC.

I was very lucky to see this post. There are several places near my home where BTC can be exchanged for US dollars. There were none last year. I think this is the process of the encryption industry that happened around me.

The ban didn’t stop us from going about our business, we were more careful how we make p2p transactions so as not to alert the authorities. Fortunately Bitcoin is now legal in Nigeria so there is complete freedom to use bitcoin, this will boost the number of people buying bitcoins.

In my country Bitcoin has really become popular. not only among men but also popular among women. even some of the crypto market analysts I know are women. I always exchange ideas with him regarding market analysis. Only if you want to keep it long term. But what's wrong with having it as another solution for those who don't own bitcoin, I guess you're still safe having payment options other than just bitcoin. On some of the services they also accept stablecoin and I think that will help their business reach those customers who don't own bitcoin. Anyway you might sell it soon or might be able to buy bitcoin with that stablecoin instead of depositing your fiat, but those are just a few of my thoughts.

I need to know who is going to be responsible for the fee. Are you going to task the customers for them to pay for the fee or the fee is going to be deducted from your pay? Bitcoin acceptance is good and this will promote the use of Bitcoin to people that have never heard of it before. To be honest, I was hesitant to do this because I thought it wouldn’t work in my profession. But there’s no downside to trying, so I did. After browsing the internet for a good bitcoin sign, I settle for this one. The sign is on my Secretary/cashier’s desk next to the card that has my bank account details. Placing the two together was deliberate because I put a discount on bitcoin making payments in bitcoin cheaper to attract people. The only challenge I face right now is 99% of our customers are female, and most do not have any prior knowledge of bitcoin or cryptocurrency, the ones who do either heard about bitcoin from their partner or social media campaigns but they haven’t given it much thought. It’s popular among the male folk here, I am yet to have a customer pay in bitcoin but it’s good enough to start the conversation. I placed a 10% discount for those who pay in bitcoin and that I think that move prompt my clients to begin asking how they can do so. I’ve had clients ask me to explain to them how Bitcoin works which I am always glad to do. Even my neighbor is curious and is likely to join the crypto fam soon. Though I haven’t had a bitcoin sales, this new addition to my business has added value and a closeness to my relationship with my clients.

That's cool, now she has that parlor. I really hope that there will be no problem with this along the way. This forum is indeed the best place to spread awareness about using bitcoin and various other crypto platforms. There will be many people who start adopting bitcoin in their businesses. But it also depends on how their country treats adoption and provides related regulations on the use of bitcoins. In the eastern region of course it is an area that supports bitcoin, but in my country in Asia Indonesia, bitcoin can only be used as a commodity tool and nothing more.
Not expecting much from a legal means of payment with bitcoins, I just made a few investments and trades as that's all that's allowed.


Regarding the OP's adoption of his business, I just wanted to see how they accept bitcoins and what payment methods are used. Because so far I have never seen documentation of payments made. It should be if anyone starts paying with bitcoin then it should be documented from the beginning of the payment until the payment process is complete, it will prove that the small adoption in OP's business becomes an actual adoption in the acceptance of bitcoin.

Yeah, I did that whenever I travelled/worked in countries with hyperinflation long term (and I actually kinda did a few heh). It's not like I even really need the service a lot but it's nice to support local economies especially when you're embedded there for a while, kinda builds trust too.
