I found another option: Myetherwallet offline signing.
This is a dead end: I can create a transaction, but I can't independently verify the signed transaction offline. That means I'll have to trust this software encodes what it says it would, and I don't like the "trust" part.

You wont be able to use the latest versions of electrum with a ledger nano with  old firmware too....
I'm not sure how old the firmware is, but I haven't flashed it since their "Recover" exists. It must have been years, and still works fine with Electrum. I'm using firmware version 1.6.0.

If you are interacting with questionable devices, then are you working to transfer to some device that is more comfortable?
That's the plan. I just want to be able to securely send it (and pay for hosting).

Quote
for these one time transactions into some place that you have more confidence.
The irony is: that place was supposed to be the current hardware wallet. I must say I'm quite disappointed in hardware wallets overall: they basically want you to buy a new one every few years, which doesn't give me more peace of mind than my own cold storage. I want something that still works 20 years from now.

Quote
I do admit to holding a few shitcoins
Some have a purpose, like low-fee small payments from a hot wallet. I initially received this Eth in a hot wallet, but moved it to Ledger when the value went up. Ironic, isn't it?

Quote
I still sometimes have difficulties figuring out where and how to store them and potentially compromising myself in the process
The more I look at Eth and how it works, the more I realize how clumsy it is compared to Bitcoin.

Quote
it looks like you guys have got this worked out.. to the extent that you are dabbling with shitcoins and wasting your time, energy and money in those endeavors
I think I'll have to cave in, upgrade the firmware, and consider the device bricked afterwards. That's unfortunate, as I would have wanted to keep using it with it's current firmware and Electrum. I just don't trust new Ledger's new firmware.

Ledger Recover isn't compatible with Ledger Nano S.
I can't take Ledger's word for it after they lied that seed phrases can't leave the device.

Imo, metamask is the best EVM (ethereum) wallet
I don't think it needs ledger live..
It didn't work.

I'll stop going off-topic now. Thanks for the suggestions!

Try metamask. It is a browser extension  maybe it will recognize your device with the current firmware.
If it doesn't, you just uninstall it.

Most users on this forum discourage people to use Ledger now because its secure element is close source, the wallet developers do not care about their users privacy, and it encourags seed phrase to be sent to companies online. Coinomi also is a close source, but if he is not able to use any other open source wallet, it could be his last resort. I have just downloaded Trust wallet again and searched for ZEC, the wallet supports it but it is also a close source wallet and which I can not recommend.

I checked the ZEC in Trust Wallet and there is no issue with its synchronization but I don't know why unstoppable is unable to solve this issue. I guess they are having problems syncing most of the privacy coins, like my DASH is also not synced on my wallet  and I previously already told that ZCash sync is too slow.

When you see the latest features in Unstoppable Wallet upgrades, you will find that they claim to add support for privacy coins and fix the syncing problems, but in reality, a lot still needs to be fixed. For example, in the latest 0.45 upgrade, they claim to have ZCASH SDK update to the latest release  Huh

Unstoppable wallet doesn't support hardware wallets, and my only other experience is with Electrum for Bitcoin. How do I rid of Eth from a Ledger hardware wallet?
This is correct, Unstoppable wallet is not supporting hardware wallets, but latest version of Cake wallet does support Trezor HW, and other hardware wallets including ledger crap.
I think Cake wallet have support for ethereum and few other altcoins, so you can try using that, but their mobile app is better than desktop wallet.

I don't know why unstoppable is unable to solve this issue.
I don't have issues with syncing monero on unstopable wallet, but one of the issues could be if Tor is enabled or some node settings.

I have used both the desktop and the mobile, they look almost identical, but just that seeing it on desktop is better somehow than on phones but in a way they are not comparable, they look so identical to the stage that I will say they are almost not comparable just asj have said.

Nop, i am still facing the transaction history not appearing for some of my BSC transfers to my unstoppable wallet. For example, I transferred some USDC on my unstoppable wallet through Bep20, but a few of those transactions are missing when I see them in the history. However, there is no issue in the balance. That's perfectly fine.

All this time I thought that I might have some syncing issues at my end, but after seeing this update, I came to know that it is a bug and it's still not completely resolved.

Unstoppable Wallet has announced a partnership with a yet unnamed third party that will enable users of the wallet to make free USDT transactions on the Tron blockchain (TRC20). This is supposed to be implemented in the next version of the app. TRC20 transactions can cost up to $3 depending on if the receiving party has TRX in the address or not, so this can come in handy. We don't know much yet except that the party Unstoppable Wallet will work with is affiliated with TRX in some way, and they will pay the transaction fees from their pockets.

It still feels like there will be some strings attached, and that users will have to meet certain conditions to take advantage of free transactions. Let's wait and see.

Here is the announcement:

I saw this news but I didn't understand this would only work on Unstoppable wallet.
Tron network is stupid and centralized, and long term this is waste of time and nothing more.
They are probably going to charge higher fees for all swaps to cover for this ''free'' transactions.

Their goal is to have people use their wallet and not some other brand, so it makes sense that it will only work on their software.

Tron network is stupid and centralized, and long term this is waste of time and nothing more.
Centralized or not, it remains the most popular blockchain for USDT. Even if it's the most expensive one. Tron's centralized nature doesn't matter much if you take into account that Tether itself controls everything that has to do with USDT. They can freeze the tokens in any address, regardless what wallet it's in. They have their blocklists where they add addresses to based on God knows what data and information.

They are probably going to charge higher fees for all swaps to cover for this ''free'' transactions.
Maybe, we will see. Or they will find another way that users of free USDT transactions will have to pay.

What about other networks like ethereum and binance smart chain? They are all centralized. If we are talking about centralization of a blockchain, many altcoins are guilty, which makes bitcoin to be unique.

Ethereum is the only one which has some decentralization, it is not exactly centralized. I think ethereum achieved some great things.

Long ago (until 2020) USDT used to run in bitcoin blockchain, in the omni layer. Unfortunately, USDT move to other blockchains, but it might come back to bitcoin (in LN, liquid  or other implementations)

They are centralized to different degrees. Of all the popular blockchains, Ethereum is probably the least centralized one and has the biggest set of validators. Chains like Solana and maybe Avalanche follow Ethereum. Binance's chain together with Tron are probably the two most centralized ones. Bitcoin is, of course, unique and shouldn't be compared to altcoin networks at all.

Unstoppable Wallet has announced a partnership with a yet unnamed third party that will enable users of the wallet to make free USDT transactions on the Tron blockchain (TRC20).
I saw this news but I didn't understand this would only work on Unstoppable wallet.
Tron network is stupid and centralized, and long term this is waste of time and nothing more.
They are probably going to charge higher fees for all swaps to cover for this ''free'' transactions.

I guess this is a good move, and the Tron network might have some partnership with Unstoppable Wallet, so they are offering free USDT transfers.

Ever since Binance Smart Chain transactions are almost free, people prefer to use BNB chain to move USDT and not the trx network. I remember there was a time when it cost a dollar to send USDT via trx chain but now it costs 2 to 3$ and it has become very expensive, much expensive than many other blockchains.

I find it weird when I see free stable coins transfer on any chain, it's rare for these  chains to see revenue and then ignore it. One way or the other, they make fees.

I'm not sure if there is any network that will sustain free stable coin transaction for long time, the binance smart chain transaction is a promotion, it will soon come to a stop. I noticed this some month back when I was sending a couple of USDT on BSC and I wasn't charge a fee. Out of curiosity, I checked and it was stated the USDT promo will end on the October and it does. If you try to make USDT transaction now to any address, you will be charge,  the fee is minor cents but it's not free.

Only few left stablecoins on BSC is free which is going to end on 31st of December. By the time this promo comes to an end, they will port back to Tron.

How come it remain $1 on some centralized exchanges which still have additional fee to their withdraw fee?

I'm not sure if there is any network that will sustain free stable coin transaction for long time
I will avoid such blockchain.

An exchange can charge you any amount as fee even if the transaction fee is cents, they are business people with profits in mind, not your chain.

This is not what I am saying, virasog said the fee is $2 to $3 now on self-custody wallet, but how come it is $1 on few exchanges. I am saying it is possible some people are overpaying.

Centralized exchanges might lose a bit for withdrawals over Tron, but they will make up for it with more expensive withdrawals on other chains, trading fees, etc.

Another thing you are maybe forgetting is the way that the Tron network works. You have probably read about "Bandwidth" and "Energy" in connection to the Tron network. When you make transactions on the network, you spend bandwidth and energy. In fact, each wallet that holds a little bit of tron gets two free TRX transactions per day. That's used for the fees. When your bandwidth is gone, you pay fees in TRX.

You spend bandwidth when sending TRX and energy for TRC20 tokens like USDT. You can increase your bandwidth and energy by staking TRX. That's what exchanges are doing. They have loads of TRX staked. That gives them plenty of bandwidth and energy, enabling them free transactions (up to a point). So even if they charge you just $1 for a withdrawal, it's more than likely that it's clean profit because of the amount of TRX they have in stake, allowing them to spend bandwidth and energy for transaction fees.

Tether itself earns billions of dollars per year from the government bonds they bought with their users' money. I don't use stable coins, but I would have expected very cheap or even free transactions on some chains just to promote their usage.

But why is that? Most USDT are on Tron blockchain and followed by Ethereum blockchain. If you see some other blockchains and layer 2 like BSC, optimism, and especially those like Aptos that the fee is almost $0 like someone is not paying any fee, people do not use them up to Tron and Ethereum blockchain if it is USDT.
