The moment this was announced, lots of boxing critics on social media said that it was a clear cherry-picking for Canelo.

What do you think guys? Who should be Canelo fighting instead of John Ryder?

I think the rematch with Bivol does have prerequisites and it's something that can be materialized that easily. Moving forward though, this was all set and Canelo should be considered as HEAVY favorite, not just a simple favorite.

Yes, a rematch with Bivol should be next for Canelo, and everyone was caught off guard with Ryder although his name keeps popping up when you ask Hearn about what's next for Canelo.

It was cherry pick because Canelo is coming off from his hand injury. But it's going to be pity to see Ryder maybe getting knockout by Canelo in the late rounds. But the real winners here will be his fans as this will be in his country, Mexico.

Is anyone surprised Canelo is still only 32 years old? For some reason I thought he was older, having had so many big high profile fights over so many years.

It is interesting that Canelo vs Ryder is slated for mexico rather than las vegas, which has long been billed as the "fight capital of the world".

Will this become a trend where many professional athletes will try to hold events outside of the united states, for whatever reason.

Well, not really. It's just that we feel he's old enough because we keep on hearing his name and certainly that is also connected to a big fights in the past years and then that three fights against GGG really gave us an impression that their age is not that far but in reality, GGG was just way ahead compared Canelo.

That said, Canelo still have at least 5-7 years of his prime to reign as a champion and be viewed as a dangerous boxer in the industry. So, I guess that also means that we will still see some more fights of Canelo in the coming years considering that there's many boxer that is calling him and that will grow in numbers as he gets older.

Yes and he could really started very early but we only get a glimpse of Canelo when Oscar pitted him against Floyd Mayweather. And then we see how Canelo developed after that to become the next cash cow in boxing.

So there's a lot of time ahead of him, although he has hand injuries, and it could be broken again. But still he is still at the prime years and even says that he  can fight 3 times a year.

I don't see how John Ryder would possibly upset Canelo. I'm interested at how the Ryder team would set a game plan that would deal Canelo an unexpected loss. Although this is a huge opportunity for their fighter, they will surely be challenged at the odds in front of them. They've got nothing to lose, yeah, but winning is just too big to simply disregard.

So far, the odds I've seen has Canelo at -1450 and John at +770. That's practically saying John doesn't stand a chance. To be honest, I'm seeing a KO victory for Canelo, but I'd be happy if John would give everybody a shock.

I think is really hard for him to take a second fight against Bivol since it was not been that long since they fought and to have another tune-up fight after he fought with GGG is a good move if he wanted to take on Bivol next.

It will be an easy fight for him and he chooses John Ryder because he will fight in his country and he wants to show off to his people and wanted to give them the best fight they can expect from him without putting huge risks on his titles.

Of course, it's a cherry-picked fight because Canelo just got his wrist fixed as he underwent a surgery just recently. His camp needs to make sure that he is ready as well as his wrist before fighting with the likes of Bivol or the winner of Benavidez-Plant fight, Ryder has been picked because aside from that fact that he is an interim champion of one of Canelo's belt, Ryder is not on par with Canelo Alvarez's prowess.

As some would say, this is a tune-up fight so somehow, it is already expected that Canelo's foe won't be that strong to try and get his belts.

It might be sad to say but John Ryder's sole reason why he is picked for this specific fight is to keep Canelo warmed up before fighting Bivol in their possible rematch and not to challenge Canelo or be an acid test if he can still dance on the ring. John Ryder's record is enough to consider that he's not that good.

All great fighters in the past and the present and even in the future will have fights like this where people will consider it as a tune fight or a cherry-picked fight, some great fighters overcome this easily while others fall to this via upset, the prominent in the heavyweight is Tyson, Joshua and even Ali, it's part of being a great and exceptional fighter.
You get low-level fighters because it was ordered or because of circumstances like upsetting your would-be opponent or a last-minute replacement, it's a test for great fighters on how they treat low-level fighters and fighters that are equal to their skill and strength.

Fighting on "Cinco De Mayo" has been a tradition now

Cinco de Mayo is May 5th. Not 6th. Tradition broken. Undecided

Not going to add a poll, OP?

Regardless, I would say that Canelo Alvarez is going to be the favorite here. Especially if you look at all the losses under John Ryders belt, 32 wins and 5 losses compared to Alvarez's 58 wins and only 2 losses. Although Alvarez has been showing weakness, especially against the opponents in his recent fights. His Dmitry Bivol match did not go so well and Canelo's hand surgery is making me feel a bit uneasy.

Still, John is the obvious underdog here and my money is not on him.

The notable win of John Ryder is against Daniel Jacobs, and maybe he caught Jacobs at the tail end of his career, and prior to that he lost to Callum Smith, in which Canelo beat already, and he doesn't have a good KO % as well.

And some bookies already listed him at 12:1 underdog against Alvarez.

Let's see what will be the other "good" betting options for this as obviously, Alvarez is going to be the overwhelming favorite.

His team knows how to pick the right fighter for a tune fight this is understandable because Canelo is coming from surgery and he may not be 100% to properly condition him he needs a low-level fighter like Ryder good for Canelo and Ryder but not good for the boxing community I think the odds at 12:1 underdog against Alvarez is far fetched guy is coming from good wins while Canelo from surgery, the guy still has a good chance, what a huge and record if Ryder can pull an upset who knows.
While I think the majority of us would like to see Canelo fighting a more challenging opponent, this is simply not possible, he is just recovering from a surgery and he needs to get back in boxing shape before he fights against a more challenging opponents, besides this was also a good opportunity for Canelo to bring a fight to his hometown, and it is obvious he was not going to bring anyone that could challenge him and risk losing at his home.

So this is a tune-up fight for Canelo, no wonder he is facing a much less popular boxer and not that heavy hitter.  Though I can tell that Ryder is a durable fighter since he only lost once via stoppage.  This fight might not be as exciting as Canelo's earlier fight but it is good to see Canelo fighting in the ring again after his surgery.  I thought it would take longer before he will dance in the ring again but surprisingly he got a match already.

This should be a really good fight, I am expecting Canelo to win this though.

It might be a good fight but I think it isn't that exciting to watch due to the opponent's records of 5 losses where 1 of 4 is via stoppage. Grin.

No odds yet for this fight from our crypto bookies, so maybe the handicappers are still trying to get the odds. But I reckon and as others speculation that Canelo will be the huge favorite here.

And it might be the first time after many fights though that Canelo opponents doesn't have any physical advantage against him. Ryder is not going to be taller than him and the reach are almost the fight. And we all know that Canelo are used to fighting tall boxers and then completely destroys them in about 10 rounds. So Ryder might not go to distance against him.

Has anybody seen any early fight odds, please post any crypto bookie odds here if and when you see them.

It will be another advantage for Canelo despite his previous injury. I agree that he'll be the favorite here no wonder because he always shows aggressiveness in the ring. His fast punches are also admirable despite facing taller and bigger opponents. Strength is really more important than the physical edge when it comes to the ring. Canelo only needs to make sure that his surgery will not affect the fight.

@mirakal - yes we can look it that way, but maybe it's the fault of the governing body that they have a interim champion that we didn't know and probably it's because Canelo is the cash cow and wanted more name fighters and thinks that Ryder doesn't deserved it. But Canelo doesn't have a choice now, he is coming from an injury and this is the right time to give Ryder his chance, beat him and remove that interim title for him.

@goldkingcoiner - Cinco de Mayo is a big holiday celebrated by the Mexicans, and in boxing, it is usually a "fight week" for Mexicans like Oscar Dela Hoya and now Canelo Alvarez, but it doesn't mean that the date of the fight itself is exactly held in May 5th, just saying.

And that is the thing, we don't know if his hands are going to be fully healthy, or if he will suffer another injury as we all know that hands are very brittle and once it has history of injuries, it might come back to haunt him later in his career.

Most likely this is the same reason why they take Ryder, in paper it seems to be legit, as he is has earn his place against Canelo.

But we all know that Eddie Hearn has cherry pick another British fighter for Canelo to beat.

Without a doubt canelo alvarez will be the favorite here cause we all know how he perform in the ring how he knocking down his opponent and how he handle the fight. And also the aggressiveness of Canelo is his best weapon in any fight. But the sad part here is that canelo has an injury before and this will be the disadvantage for him because when he reach beyond the limits theirs a chance that the injury will occurs .

I guess we can say that Oscar Dela Hoya did really pitted the young Canelo who was still 23 years old at that time against the prime Floyd Mayweather Jr. just because Oscar believed that his cashcow will be the one who will stain Floyd's record. But that certain defeat indeed molded Canelo to be much a clever boxer inside the ring and did took the Philly Shell personally as he invented an intelligent way how to counter it afterwards because that was the reason why he lost most of the rounds.

I also believe that it was the only time that Canelo had his chance to fight Mayweather because if Canelo was already a heavy name at that time, the latter might've ducked him and we cannot witness that certain fight.

Has anybody seen any early fight odds, please post any crypto bookie odds here if and when you see them.

He is a $1.10 favourite on all Australian sportsbooks so assume it'll be the same with Crypto ones too.

I guess that is somehow expected that Canelo will be a heavy-favorite to all the bookies considering that John Ryder is not that kind of boxer who is viewed as a threat to Canelo's belts and undisputed title. Even the people who are an avid fans of the boxing industry are not that swayed about this Ryder even if he holds the WBO interim belt and that he can give an upset to the undisputed champion given that Canelo just got his wrist fixed recently.

Anyway, for those who are not familiar about John Ryder, you can see his record here.
