5 Behavioural signs that suggest you are Addicted to Gambling

I think as long as we can take care of ourselves while gambling, we can keep our gambling activity from others and we do not have to tell them. But most people will say they don't gamble even though they already have a gambling addiction and seem to cover up their gambling activities.

But if they lie to borrow money and instead use it to play gambling, it can cause them trouble, especially if they lose and lose all their money. They can't tell the truth because it can make the people around them disappointed to hear it. That's why we have to avoid it so as not to cause trouble for ourselves later.

I agree with the guy above that lying about your gambling activities doesn't necessarily indicate that you are a gambling addict because you can also lie sometimes because you don't want people to simply know that you gamble even if you are not an addict, I personally tend to do that even though I know I'm not an addict, it is just better to keep some things to yourself instead of telling everyone about it.

About borrowing money, that should basically not be done if you are doing it for gambling, and if you do that and lie about it, you are definitely addicted to gambling and the urge to gamble is what makes you borrow money so that you can continue to gamble.

I'm not saying I gamble a lot because I'm uncomfortable saying so. But I also try to control myself while playing gambling and will not cross the boundaries that I have made. Yes, I also feel it's better to keep some things to myself and not tell others.

And borrowing money is not always a good way out, especially if we can't calculate how much we have to pay each month or whether we can afford to pay it off later. Maybe borrowing money to use other things is still acceptable because we need it for something and not for gambling.

So I asked myself what behaviour would suggest that an individual is a problem gambler. Did some research and found many behaviour that suggest an individual is struggling with gambling addiction. Out of those I found the following five behaviours to be most common ones in a problem gambler.  

• Preoccupation with gambling.
• The urge to increase wagers to achieve the same level of excitement.
• Having difficulty in controlling, cutting back, or stopping gambling despite several attempts.
• Lying about gambling activities.
• Borrowing money to gamble.

Lying about our gambling activities doesn't necessary mean we're addicted to gambling, some of us might be family or community that don't take gamblers as serious people and for you to maintain your reputation in the society you have to lie about your whereabouts.

Borrowing of money to gamble is the worst behavior of a gambling addict, borrowing money to gamble means you're not ready to stop playing even when the best are not favoring you. Instead of borrowing we should set budget for ourselves so we don't over gamble.

The behavior aren't the same for all individuals that's havung an addiction problem but they have similar bad behavior that if they can control that behavior then they'll be closer to stopping their gambling addiction.

The truth is that most gamblers are addicted to it, only that the level of addiction varies, which is why we shouldn't worry unless it has eaten deep into our emotions and we could hardly do anything without it despite losing money every time. In this situation, such a person needs help and must forcefully take a break from gambling before his mental state in this regard would be reset. The truth is that most people are just crying foul after they are addicted already but always neglecting what causes the addiction. People should not think that gambling is a means that will make them rich and should stop gambling without a proper budget for it.

They should gamble for fun, calculate their daily, weekly and monthly gambling amount and keep them in a separate account and be ready to be contented with the gains from it. These are some of the calculative plans to avoid emotional attachment to gambling and make you enjoy it rather than violating its responsibility clause.

The 4th one I do not agree with. I know some people who lie about their gambling activities because they don't want to get in trouble either due to their nature of work or to their family. Some are literally just trying to hide their gambling activities even though they play for fun on a handful of occasions or just to kill time and that doesn't mean that they are addicted. The rest of the list, well, it's highly possible that these guys who possess these behavior will turn out as addicts as it point towards one common theme: lack of self-control.

Not many are honest in their gambling activities, let alone to family or friends of co-workers, but that's also not a reason that can be said to be an addict, after all there are two categories of addicts, light addicts and heavy addicts, usually heavy addicts are more difficult to recover because they really don't care about the people around them, let alone advice, so they continue to play gambling spending money.

If I look at most of the lists that are written like light addicts, you can't be called addicts and most people don't want to be honest because they just want to play for fun for themselves and don't want many people to know about their fun activities, but even so, usually light addicts are still can still control themselves, except for heavy addicts.

There's a young guy who stay with me a couple of days because he was in the city for an event. I noticed very weird and strange behaviour from him which was that he liked to bet money on every situation even outside the betting or gambling platform. He can ask that you both bet on the first colour of car that will drive by the house, he can ask that you both bet on the gender of the first runner that we will see in the park, and other kind of strange bets. This behaviour is a sign.

The five mentioned behavioural signs that suggested a gambler is addicted, I think pretty much summarizes it all..
And for me,  I think it is pretty much easy for a gambling addict to know that he or she is addicted, and addict who doesn't know that he or she is addicted pretty much has to serious problems..

And the first of it being that, it takes knowing and agreeing that I am addicted to gambling, before I move on to the second stage which is embarking on the journey of breaking free from the addiction.

For a person to know what he or she is addicted even without being told, is pretty easy, when you find yourself spending on gambling, money you know you are not supposed to play gambling with, and you just can't hold your self back, or you struggle to hold yourself from spending that money on gambling, it's a pretty and easy sign of addiction.

Good to see a lot of users contributing so positively to this topic. We never talk about Gambling addiction on this child board nor on the main board. After reading your replies I did see a lot of you agreeing to the 5 behavioural signs mentioned on the OP. The fact is that we never accept we are addicted. We only find excuses that we are not. Stll, we go on and gamble that according to me is the biggest sign of our addiction. Already a lot of lives have been destroyed to this addiction. It is time we rethink what is the best option as a Gambling addict what is the best option for us. Reach out to the nearest anti addiction service if you want to live a happy life.
