maybe that person wasn't addicted to gambling yet, he just kept spending a lot of time gambling and it's very different from being a gambling addict, for example the guys who work in the casinos and do the odds they have to spend a lot of time watching the games and analyzing a lot of data from many games every day, but that doesn't make them addicted to gambling, they are working, also another example is the case of professional bettors, they also spend many hours doing analysis of many games to be able to decide which game they will place a bet on, it is not something they will do in a few hours

Just like others, even I thought you are talking about physical inability but after reading the post I got the context.
It's true though. A lot of gamblers out there cannot be convinced because of their gambling addiction.
There are many who still want to quit gambling but their addiction over powers them and they get back to gambling.
It's a sad reality but they indeed behave like a deaf not because they don't want to listen but because they can't follow what they listen.

He was still at the point where he could easily be saved, which meant he could still listen to what other people were saying to him. Luckily there is a brother who knows and wants to say that he has gone too far in gambling, because if no one advises him maybe he will fall into an even crazier addiction hole.
Now this is an example of why someone should know we are gamblers, so when we lose control there will be someone to warn us and that will be a brake on us. And also people who know we are gamblers must have a high sense of concern, because if they were indifferent people they would not think about us.

The story is not complete and what exactly he was saved? I only see on this story that someone is just absent mindend when gambling and not addicted at all. An addicted person will not gonna be on that state of mind because they are busy on their wager.

Maybe we have different understanding of what the OP is telling. OP said "I met someone who said he wasn't even aware he was an addict until his sibling told him he was too deep into gambling". I say "saved", what I mean is that the gambler can still be made aware of what he did wrong (gambling excessively).
It's clear here that even the gambler the OP is talking about is aware that he has gone overboard, and I see that because he realized after being warned by his brother. And usually we admit our mistakes at that time after it happened.

But yeah, majority of the addicts don't care about things and don't listen to people advices until they are on a very deep trouble because of gambling. It's rare to see an addict to stop doing gambling just because they are told to stop. Even with realizations, there still an urge to do gambling if you are an addict. Those who stop instantly suffered from withdrawal and they just continued to play after trying it one more time.

It is common for gamblers to play deafness to advice especially if it is coming from someone who doesn't gamble at all or who gambles seldomly. I am having the notion the brother to the gambler might also be a gamble and knows how to make his brother listen to him about his addictions. It takes an experienced and trained person to talk an addict out of their addiction.

When something grows into an addict it takes extra discipline to break out of it. And to make an addict see reason with you the words of conviction must be full of experience, less of condemnation and packed with encouragement.

In the world of gambling addiction is the worst enemy we have cause through addiction we can not control ourselves and that's the bad thing. That's why many Addicted gamblers have a ear deafness because they can not control themselves.  we must have the mindset that we gamble for fun and not for earning cause the more we mind that gambling is for earning then a big chance that we got into addiction.

Not just gambling addicts actually like we also see game addicts on the computer when they are engrossed in playing with their games sometimes they also like to be deaf they don't hear when we call, because they are focused on having fun playing and are definitely serious in playing, that's why there is always self-control before playing for example gambling, because basically being an addict or not is a choice.

If you don't want to become an addict, just limit your budget and time to play, including duration, so you can control the game and know when to stop. It's difficult, but if you're consistent, you won't fall deeper into a game like a heavy addict. that is why never gamble if you are not mentally prepared when you experience defeat. as you said addiction is the gambler's worst enemy.

I don't know if this can be immediately confirmed by a psychiatrist because I don't think everyone has the inclination not to listen. It's just that there are some gamblers who are like this, usually, here they are deaf, that is, in general, a man will focus on the one job he is doing. Let's say he is gambling, even though he is shouted at in a loud voice, he tends not to respond to the sound because his focus level is at one point. To make stimulation easier, you can do a small experiment with 2 subjects, male and female, to prove the response rate of both. Try calling a woman (subject 1) who is focused on doing something and how will she respond? then do the same thing to the man (subject 2) whether he is gambling or actually doing other tasks (provided that both are really in a state of focus as gamblers who focus on the game).

The thing is that realizing by your own could be also dangerous, because it could imply something drastic or traumatic has to happen in order for one to realize how deep the hole is where one is trapped after so many months or years. And at that point it is easy to have already lost the support of family and friends.

And I agree with you, this kind of things are not exclusive to gambling but rather happens quite often when comes to some behavioral addictions. I have a cousin who struggled with videogame addiction for months, League of Legends specifically, he would spend all the night playing and also play while eating, in spite the advice I personally offered to him about that kind of habits...

How would you know an addicted gambler ? When you start advising him to stop gambling,he will stop coming to see you anymore or want to interact with you so that you don't continue bugging him against his gambling wishes. I don't think that a gambler even knows when he is addicted because he thinks that it is his usual life style. I met someone who has lost everything he had on gambling and still believes that he will recover his lost,so many persons advised him but he turned his deaf ears on them. Gamblers will never be aware if they are into gambling addiction unless they monitor themselves and reflect on their gambling situation.  Addiction never tells a gambler that he will strike him, it is working in silence and it is late for a player when he knows about his gambling addiction.

But yes most people won’t listen or react angry when they’re presented with a negative aspect of their personality

That title confused me to be honest with you op. I thought you meant ear deafness in the literal sense here. Anyway, I don't have any friends who cannot control their gambling addictions since they don't really wager much.

However, I know how difficult it is to control your gambling addiction based on my personal experience. It can get really, really scary sometimes.

Anyways, personally for me, I used to have a friend who was addicted to gambling, and many a times I advice him to either reduce the way he gambles, or quit it completely, and the problem with him is not that he does not listen, he does listen but going with the instructions given is where his problem lies..
One time, he confessed to me that, he had been trying his best to see if he can stop gambling, but hes unable to, that as long as he has money in his pocket, he will not rest from gambling until the whole money is gone.

Now, that is true addiction, so not that addicted gamblers have deaf ears and don't listen or hear what they are told to do, they do listen and hear, but the spirit behind that addiction won't allow them do exactly what they are told to do.

And he is really lucky to have siblings who are willing to say that he is addicted to gambling, and this is good because he can ask his siblings to help cure his gambling addiction. And supposedly, the man can try to recover with the help of his brother, but it will return to the man because no one can force his will on the man except for the man who asks for help from other people.

Without reading the details of your posts a person will never understand what you have discussed here. Your title is one and the post is another.

Anyway, I am discussing your post. But yes there are many gamblers on online gambling platforms who have become addicted to gambling but they don't want to reveal themselves in public. But their behavior reveals their addiction to gambling. Here it is clearly understood that OP has become addicted to gambling everyone understands but dare not tell his elder brother because his elder brother is his savior. Gambling addiction is a very serious addiction and those who are addicted to it are completely destroyed.

I have been involved in online gambling for a long time but never turned gambling into an addiction. Moreover, till date I have not seen such a person as you quoted. But quite some time ago a person asked me about online gambling and how to gamble there. His family condition was very bad. So I advised him not to come directly to the gambling stage but he listened to me.

I've met a lot but to be honest I don't think they will listen to me if ever talk to them to stop on that addiction. I'm not the type to gave some advice but if I do I really get to the point and be frank to them directly on what are their problems and what to do to cope with it. I don't think they're deaf, they just don't want to listen to what others want to say.

I don't think the problem is that they don't want to listen, the issue is that they are not discipline enough to actually stop the act because to stop gambling addiction you actually need to be very precise on your decision to stop it, its not an easy task but anyone who knows how dangerous the habit can get will definitely find a way to stop this act.

Do not be surprised if many of us are fond of gambling, the fact is that they are not aware that they are part of the addict. I found many of these phenomena in the neighborhood where I live, although not all of them fall into the category of addicts. but many of them claim, that they play just for fun and nothing more. However, what they don't realize is that they are involved in gambling almost every day. there is also, they are very well aware that they have become part of the gambling addicts. yet they deny it, that they are not one of them. I'm pretty sure, there are plenty of us who are in denial like I said.

I myself, it seems yes, I am a gambling addict. however, that doesn't mean I gamble blindly like the image of gambling addicts. in essence, I have an understanding of gambling itself, the definition of gambling for me, and most importantly responsibility. at least, for ourselves without harming the people around us.
There are also some of my friends who are compulsive gamblers, even some of them have spent their possessions. to be honest, I have no right to judge what they have done. right or wrong, let them judge for themselves. My job as a friend is nothing more than to give them support and motivation so they don't overdo it in their gambling. some of them, knowing full well that they were corrupted. however, their high desire for gambling has taken root deep and made it difficult for them to escape their addiction. people like this, need support from friends, family, and need special treatment.
