Downloading the App
This is my own part of the Mixin Safe review and I will like to be very swift since my experience was not as complex as I thought  would be. I was able to download the Mixin Safe app through the main site without any difficulty.  I preferably choose to download on Play Store since I Android interface was always easy to use for me. The downloading was very fast and the Mixin Safe app has little Megabyte which made it very faster since the space was small.

After downloading,  I quickly create an account using a phone number to back it up so incase I have to retrieve it back. I was also prompted to create a 6 digits pin to backup my account which was one of the safety precautions of Mixin Messenger app to prevent unnecessary access by a third party. I took a walk around the app to see some of the functions that amazed me alot. I discovered that I can easily create a chat group and add my contacts making it end to end encrypted. It has a white background and a touch of blue with black words that makes it suitable to use and assimilate. 

Mixin Messenger Improvement
I would have been so happy if it has the option to adjust the background like putting it on a dark mode because I am a kind of person that like controlling the amount of light emissions from my mobile. I am allergic to been exposed to too much light for a long time and this is one of the reasons why I also switch my phone servings to dark mode because the white background generate too much white light that do affect my eye when exposed for a longer time than expected. 

The option of using only phone number is a turn off for me, so it will be impressive if the team can add other options that users can use to create accounts apart from just using phone numbers. This will be better for those of use that don't like using our phone online or attaching it to our wallet for any known reason. Since the Mixin Messenger wallet is a decentralised one, it will be much better to have so many options so create account. I also hope more coins will be supported because I tried searched for some of the meme coins I'm holding and can't find them.

Downloading Mornin Key
The morning Key is a good app but I add some challenges when downloading it. At first I downloaded the APK file since it was free to use but my device did not support it. I tried deleting it and downloading it with another browser but still couldn't install it which was a big headache to me downloading it consecutively.  I had no option than to use another mobile device to download it because I was almost fading up. I tried the Bitcoin Core as another option  but there was a lot of configurations I had to do to enable me to use it with my Mixin Messenger. 

The use of Mornin Key was the most appropriate option for me since it was easier to use.  I finally downloaded it with another mobile device so I can use it with the Mixin Messenger.  After downloading,  I quickly created an account and create a pin that was another safety precaution. Thr Mornin Key app was very simple to use with a nice interface. I was able to move around the app since it was a seed phrase back up app.

Creating my own contacts
The contact adding was a big challenge to me and I never wanted to waste time to add contacts to my list. The app was easier to use and adding contacts using the scan code bar. I was able to scan my contact barcode to add then to my contact list and the process was very quick without any delay. The speed of Mixin Messenger was very fast and I love it. I also allowed my contacts to add me too to there contact so tag we can see one another and create a single group testing it how efficient it was. Thr Mixin Messenger was very easy to use  with so many features that was appealing.

Creating a New Safe
For me to get to this stage confused me a lot because I was wondering how i am going to create a New Safe after I have done the necessary things to do. I was able to scan the bar code on the Mixin Website to get to my account, enabling me to have an access to create my own New Safe. The process of creating my New Safe account was very fast since k have already done everything that was necessary for me to do before getting to the stage of creating a New Safe. I added the number of person to confirm transaction and I was able to get to the stage where I was asked to upgrade. I paid $2 in bitcoin although there was so many options for me to pay but I preferred paying through bitcoin.

After sending the Bitcoin using my personal wallet, I waited for it to show on my New Safe and it does not take upto 3 minutes for the first confirmation before the second confirmation making the transaction to be approved. Immediately the transaction was approved, i was referred to another page to complete the registration.  After I was done with the opening of the New Safe account,  I decided to make a transaction to test the wallet based on transaction fee and how fast it will take to complete a single transaction.  It was very quick for the transaction to want through. 

Conclusion
MY experience using the Mixin Messenger and registering my Mixin Safe account was very simple and smooth. The team had really done a good job creating a good wallet that support so many coins and Blockchains that is a major desire of every users to see what they are looking for on the wallet. I hope more coins and chains will be updated soon so that we can have a smooth experience using the Mixin wallet with our New Safe accounts.

My Review of Mixin Safe - Decentralized Bitcoin Custody Solutions

Having being accepted into the review campaign. I read through the thread once again. This was to enable get a perfect idea of what was expected of me a reviewer. Gladly, there was a to-do which provided excellent directions for review. Therefore, I will follow the guide and provide my honest review of the product. Let’s get started.
creating a Mixin Safe - the process

(a) Download and Install Mornin Key
To create a Mixin Safe, I first have to download and install Mornin Key. Since I am an Andriod user, I opened my Google PlayStore and searched for Mornin Key. I had to pay around $0.69 to buy the app before I could download and install the app. I made the payment and was therefore able to download and install the app.
The two things I noticed from the Google Play Store about the app is that first, there is no review and second, it is yet to receive any rating.

     

I then proceeded to creating an account. I entered my preferred username, I choose the passcode option rather than the biometric option. Next, I was asked to secure my wallet by writing down the mnemonic phrase on a piece of paper and storing in a vault or safe place. I clicked on next and was asked to enter the mnemonic phrase. When I was done, it took me to a new page.

     
(b) Download and Install Mixin Messenger
After downloading and installing the Mornin Key, I proceeded to my Google PlayStore once again to download and install the Mixin Messenger. This was pretty smooth and it didn’t require me to buy it. Unlike the Mornin Key, this one already has a rating of 4.5 and a couple of reviews too.
To sign up, I was required to enter my phone number. A 4-digit verification pin was sent to my number. I didn’t experience any delays in receiving the verification pin. I received the pin in less than 3 minutes. After which I enter my preferred username. Then got a welcome message from the Mixin team which contained the messenger’s guidelines.  I proceeded to setting a 6 digit wallet PIN so as to create my first digital wallet. I entered and confirmed the pin four times. It took some few minutes synchronise and then viola, the wallet was created.

(c)Create Mixin Safe
To create my Mixin safe, I had to use the Mornin key I had prepared earlier to do it. But this is like the tricky part because I had to leave the app and go to the website to be able to do this. Me thinks that everything should be done in the app. It is a hassle going from the app to the website and then back. Crypto noobs may lose interest as they would conclude that the process is cumbersome. Okay back to the creating the safe on the website.

 
I followed the whole process on the website and the final step was to use Mixin Messenger to Scan the QR Code on my computer screen. I did so and an authorization request popped up – to read public profile etc I granted it my entering my passcode. Upon which I received a message on the app saying I have signed into Mixin Safe Successfully.
Going forward I followed the instruction and guide on the https://support.mixin.one/en/article/how-to-use-mornin-key-to-create-mixin-safe-1u1rf36/
I clicked on safe, then new safe, then entered the new safe name and choose bitcoin as my preferred network and clicked on Next. The next page is to confirm the owner of the safe by selecting the private key wallet that controls the current safe. I selected Mornin key and used it to scan the QR Code on the page. After this step, the next was to set up members and threshold.

At this point, I got the message that I have to upgrade the plan to create the safe

On the upgrade plan window, I chose the Standard $2 per year option and proceeded to make payment. I chose the USDT(TRC20) as my payment crypto and then proceeded to make the payment. I went back to my dashboard and clicked on CREATE to complete the process which required that I use Mornin Key to scan the QR code which was provided.

     

(c) Making a Deposit and Withdrawal on Mixin Safe
I used my Binance exchange wallet and transferred 0.0005087BTC to my Mixin safe Bitcoin wallet. It took about 45minutes for my Safe wallet to get credited. There was also a notification message on my Mixin Messenger that reads [Davidvictorson] received a deposit of 0.0004587 BTC. I go to my dashboard and the balance has reflected.

The withdrawal was pretty much the same thing. The process went like this From Safe – Receiver and Amount – Summary – Member(s) Approval – Owner Approval. I used my mornin Key for the approval. I monitored it on https://bitcoinblockexplorers.com/. It was faster than the deposit.

(e) Final Comments
1.   I totally enjoyed the process from downloading the apps to creating the safe, making deposit and withdrawals.
2.   For a first timer it wasn’t easy. The guide was straightforward and easy to follow.
3.   I have no problems with the phone number for sign up but then again there should be more than one signup option.
4.   I would also recommend that users drop their reviews and ratings on the Google Play page of the Mornin Key app.
5.   I look forward to doing more transactions.

..Preamble:..
Since the creation of bitcoin, the most challenge bitcoin users have faced is safe keeping of bitcoin. Many people which includes early adopters of bitcoin lost huge amount of bitcoin due to poor bitcoin management skill. Satoshi couldn't even bother himself much about this, such that he told us that the lost bitcoin is an advantage to the network as it makes bitcoin more scarce.

Recently, CZ of Binance made an exaggerated statement that 99% of the people will lose crypto storing in safe custody. Little did he know that mixin is coming with a solution.

The OWNER key is managed by third party and popular bitcoin wallets,  can have a normal backup solution, and no need to worry about it's stolen or lost. Because nobody will be able to spend the coins with this only OWNER key, and the coins can be recovered even if the OWNER key is completely lost.

This is the most fascinating part of this project and that is the reason of my interest in the project.

..My overall experience:..
I will firstly acknowledge that this is a big project unlike what I thought before applying for the review. Not only being a big project, it embarked on a project that isn't what an ordinary bitcoin user is conversant with. If anyone wants to be his own bank, recover lost bitcoin or seed, sh/e should be able or willing to make some sacrifices of learning.
From the morning key to the mixin.safe has a nice user experience and interface. There isn't so much deviation from the standards of a wallet or a messenger in either case, but uniqueness is maintained.

I had no issues with installation of morning key and mixin messager, but at a time I saw myself moving forth and back. It looked as if I was doing a repetitive task but at every repeating stage, the task isn't becoming easy. This was to be a big issue for a newcomer in the crypto world who has never installed a wallet or run a node.
Transactions were fast and prompt. Sending bitcoin from a private wallet to mixin was far, but the reverse experienced a high fee which many other reviewers have complained.
It seems the team is seriously maintaining the whole project based on the recommendations from this review. I was stuck while trying to access the wallet for more than 15 mins, with the information Server under maintenance error 502
Sending bitcoin to a contact was fast and cool.

My experience within the time of this review convinced me that this is a project I will have to use. I have mapped a plan of calling the attention of my tech savvy friends who are not in this forum to this project. This will surely be our new place of online hang out.

..Pluses ++:..
Below are features of the mixin decentralized ecosystem that deserve my accolade. There are more to this, but I have to list this for now:

• The first project I have seen that maintains decentralization and as well as offers a believable bitcoin inheritance solution
• A messenger with inbuilt crypto wallet. You chat and you share funds in same platform

• The OWNER key is managed by third party and popular bitcoin wallets,  can have a normal backup solution, and no need to worry about it's stolen or lost. Because nobody will be able to spend the coins with this only OWNER key, and the coins can be recovered even if the OWNER key is completely lost.

• The multi-sig method of transaction approval gives a resounding believe on security
• User friendly interfaces
• A little fun. I had to play games to wait for customer support. Unlike other platforms that I may boringly wait endlessly for the support

..Challenges:..
My experience wasn't totally a seamless one, so I have to list some challenges I encountered in this project.

• Having to frequently move from one device to another in order to perform or approve transaction was a challenge.  I understand it is for security purpose according to the multi-sig model that was used. I do no also have a recommendation of a better way to handle this, but then it was challenging to me.
• The mixin.safe interface is not mobile responsive.  I mean, I perceive the team behind this project is very competent.  They should understand that the responsiveness of recent time is mobile-first(because many people are using mobile than desktop). At a time I began to think that it's a deliberately act to achieve something.  But whatever it might be, it really frustrated me that i had to turn my phone to landscape and portrait within seconds. I wanted to stop reviewing till I have access to my computer, but on a seond thought the deadline for this review will elapse.  
• Transaction error 503 service unavailable invalid character 'W' looking for beginning of value - code : 400. I tried for some minutes to solve this, because this is relayed to JSON files. Not until I discovered I was using a crypto address in private wallet. I don't know why the addresses from either exchange or wallet are not compatible
• There are some kind of restrictions, majorly in the plan upgrade. I will like to know what other reviewers will say here

..Questions:..

• Is P-USD mixin's stable coin?
• Is the morning key password manager a project of mixin?
• Members to approve transaction was set to 1 by default, does increasing the number increase security?
• During registration, phone number was needed and not email. But during chat with support, email was needed, why?  
• If someone sends me an address for a transaction, will I have to ask the person if the address was from a wallet or an exchange?

..Recommendations:..

• There should be varying fee for transactions in the mixin crypto messenger.  Transaction of 0.123 BTC should be higher than a transaction of 0.0036 BTC. It doesn’t make much sense for transaction fee to be higher than transaction itself. If you feel no one should send 0.0001 BTC, then increase the transaction limit.
• I purposely entered a wrong 6 digit pin and I got this response. . I mean 24hrs is too long for someone who wants to complete a transaction to wait. But then, I proceeded without waiting.
• I have seen many reviewers suggesting that all the fees be eliminated. But if mixin wants other ways to earn, a means to convert from one coin to another could be introduced here. I know this is a wallet and not a CEX. But I wanted to convert btc to other coins and would have done it even if a small fee was charged me. This is not making so much sense because my proposal I am suggesting a touch of centralization

..Conclusions:..
For the purpose of the review I have dropped this, but will from henceforth visit the discussion thread of this project because I have found a great interest in the project, it solved an existing problem in a convenient way.
I pause here and allow other reviewers to cover other areas I could not cover in the review.

First Impression:

I am very new to such a project and I did not review this type of project previously. So it's a little bit hard for me to understand everything and try to do some study before making the review and it takes some time.

Installing Mixin Messenger:

After visiting the Safe website I go to download Mixin Messenger and I go to the google play store redirected from the Mixin Safe website. And I have successfully Downloaded it without any issues.

Creating Mixin Messenger account:

After successfully installing the Mixin Messenger App I go to create the account and see only the option of creating an account with a Mobile phone. But was looking for an option like email. Since it is all about crypto I think they should keep at least another option for creating an account. This will help to feel good about the user's privacy and also increase the installation/usage of this app I assume.

Then I tried to create an account with a Phone number and got a verification code on time. I saw some users were talking about delaying receiving the verification code. But I got it on time and very the code easily without any errors.

 

During the creating new wallet we need to set a pin. I was really amazed when I see the app asking to type 4 times the confirmation pin. It's annoying but I love it so that people don't forget the pin later

After successfully setting up the 5 digits pin. I can see a new wallet with a lot of coins. It's looking good that they are accepting a lot of cryptos. Here are some of them.

Mixin Messenger Features:

After creating the wallet I try to keep an eye on everywhere in around the app. I found some features that I really love. Some of them.

1. Privacy - Setting -> Account -

• Change Phone number: Nice feature where I am eligible for changing phone number if needed
• Delete account: I really feel good with this feature. It's always good If I can delete my account permanently.

2. Privacy - Setting -> Account -> Privacy

• Conversation: Where I can choose who can message me
• Phone Number: I can hide phone numbers from everyone like Telegram
• Incognito Keyboard: I love to switch on this feature
• Finger Print: This is also good for safety

3. Privacy - Setting -> Account -> Security

• Emmergency Contact: Where I can set a emergency contact
• Athorizations: I can give an authorization to other contact
• Logs: Where I can see my logs

Adding Contact:

To add a contact I created another account and add it as the contact. It also went smoothly.


Adding funds in Mixin Messenger wallet:

To make a deposit I choose LTC for lower fees. and I deposited some 0.174 LTC which arrived after 12 confirmations and it takes 5-7 minutes.

 

Installing Mornin key app:

Like downloading Mixin Messenger I also went to the google play store. And I realize that it is a Paid app and need to pay around $1 to buy it. But I was not able to pay due to the payment method. So I start to search again on the website and found a link of downloading the apk file free.

Creating Mornin key

After installing the app I created successfully the Mornin key after passing a few common steps which are super easy and without any issues.

   

Creating Mixin Safe

To create a Mixin safe I visit https://safe.mixin.zone/ and connect my phone to my PC by scanning the QR code easily.

Creating a New Safe: To create a multi-sig wallet I clicked on + create New safe button from the right top of the safe.mixin.zone website. They redirect me to another page where I need to put the Safe name and choose the crypto that I am creating the multi-sig for. I put them and Click on the next button. They show me a QR code to scan from My Mornin Key app.

I scan the QR code and click on next. Now need to add my Contact there. I was confused here. I tried this before adding my contact in Mixin Messenger. Later Create a new account and add it as a contact. During this adding contact period, I was on the same page where need to put My contact. But it was not working. Later logout and re-login and try to search for my contact. It works and it is there.
 

After adding the contact Clicked on next, and was redirected to a new page where I need to upgrade the plan. For upgrading the plan there were a lot of crypto payments accepted. But I tried first the MixPay+wallet, But it won't work(I got some error like insufficient funds. ) Later I choose Crypto as a payment method and select LTC. and I paid the fee of 2 USD from Mixin Messenger wallet without any issue.

After successfully creating the Safe it's activated and generated a new LTC wallet address. I scanned the wallet address from Mixin Messenger and send the fund from there. I sent 0.12 LTC which was $10, but the fee was 0.02 LTC which is like $1.66, I have to admit that the fee was bigger for mainly LTC. It should be less.

Btw it has arrived at my LTC Safe. without any issue. No need to time the test of the withdrawal method. After trying the withdrawal stuff I realize that you need to pass the same steps that you have passed during creating a new Safe. It it's good and secure.

Send -> Select Safe -> Receiver wallet address and Amount -> Member approval and Lastly Owner Approval (Mixin key scan).

After passing these steps the transaction was successful (takes some time since needs a few approvals). I got the fund to my other wallet smoothly without any issues.

Transfering fund to contact

After doing all the above things last I try to make a transfer to my contact. Simply click on my contact and go to the message page. From the bottom, I find an option like Transfer, Clicked on it, and come to a screen for inputting the amount and confirm button. I did and it was more than smooth and faster. I love it.

       

Final Impression: After completely doing all the essential parts I am really happy to use this platform. Now I am feeling better and easy to use. The most important thing is due to the multi-sig feature where users need multi approvals to make a transaction, I have to admit that it's super secured and recommended for all to use this platform.

Sugestions

• Login Option: As you all know, most crypto users like to protect their privacy, I will really suggest adding another option beside Phone number
• Withdrawl Page Scanner: While I was withdrawing the fund from my Safe. I need to put the address manually. I think if we have an option for scanning addresses would be good I think.

My Review:  UmerIdrees

I will share my experience here. Since I read some of the reviews and I was afraid that it will be a difficult process but once I initiated it was not as difficult as it seems. In fact i enjoyed it.

Mornin Key Installation

First, I installed Mornin Key on my Android phone. It asks me to create a new account. I created a new account with my name. I secured it with my face ID and also write down the mnemonic. The process was pretty simple and easy.



Mixin Messenger

The next step was to install the Mixin Messenger. I  downloaded it from the playstore and installed it.



On my fast internet connection, It hardly took a minute or two to get installed. The next step was to verify the phone number. I waited for some time but the code did not arrive. Perhaps my country was supported or it could have been any other reason (an issue at the cellular company). I tried another number and it worked.

I was asked to set up a pin which I did successfully. I had to verify that PIN four times. This was something unusual as verifying two times should be enough. I created my wallet on the Mixin messenger and was glad to find that it supported a few cryptocurrencies including bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB, LTC etc

Mixin Safe
So now after setting up both Mixin Messenger and Mornin key, the next phase was to test and experience the Mixin Safe. For this purpose, I opened https://safe.mixin.zone/start.  Since I already had the Mornin key setup, I used the Mornin Key as an Owner wallet option and my all the steps were already completed, so i moved on to https://safe.mixin.zone/login page where i was given the option to scan my mixing messenger. The process was very fast and i was directed to https://safe.mixin.zone/dashboard



So the next step was to create a safe. There were two options to choose from the network, Bitcoin or Litecoin.
I choose My favourite, Bitcoin.

Next, I connected my Mornin wallet which holds the owner key of the current safe by scanning the QR code. It was done successfully.



Now it says that creating this safe requires upgrading the plan, so I decided to upgrade to the cheapest 2$ plan. I choose the TRX to deposit 2$.



I overpaid a bit just to make sure that the TX fees are covered but surprised to find that they have the refund option too.
However, i did not opt for refund as the amount was not so big.

Finally the new safe was created and i also activated it by signing in the QR code through Mornin key.

Now i tested the deposit and withdrawal and checked if everything works fine. The deposit arrived as soon as it was confirmed and i faced no delay at all. Also i checked my mixin messenger and verified that the btc was showing there as well.



Finally i tried to withdraw and as expected i have to sign in and approve the transcation from my Mixin Messeger and then the onwer approval from the Mornin Key. It was approved instantly and the status also got confirm instantly.

Overall it was a very good expereince and i was satisfied with the working of Mixin Safe.

Review on Mixin Safe

Sign Up Process:
Generally smooth, gives the user detailed explanation and guidance to get their wallet set up. A little suggestion would be to list the alternative wallets that allows for PSBT signing, Electrum, etc. It would be possible to use a segwit address with the safe. The only modification would be getting the user to select the signwithprivatekey option and extract their private key that corresponds to the bc1 address.
Key Issue -
Website appears to be unoptimized for mobile viewing. User needs to scroll over the website to access the key functions, creating the wallet, reading the details etc. Can be coded better to optimize it for mobile UA. Messenger website appears to be fine.

Wallet creation:
The number of confirmations for the PIN setup appears to be quite excessive. It would be better to have a shorter PIN with rate limit on it, such that any bruteforce is difficult. There isn't any safeguards against using the digits of my phone number for the pin as well. Might be a good idea to restrict the user on the pin choices.
Wallet Usage:
Generally quite pleasing to the eye except for the menu selection, which is erronously labelled as "Bots" and the unclear labelling of the functions. Can be better if it is labelled instead.

3 Confirmations seems a little excessive for Bitcoin, but it is still within a tolerable range. 1 conf would make for a better user experience.
Messaging app:
The layout looks quite similar to Whatsapp's and messages are received pretty quickly. It would be good for it to have hyperlinks on links with a redirection for better security.

Sending of funds through messaging app appears to be working well:

Bug for withdrawal: There seems to be a bug where it says there are insufficient funds though the funds are clearly enough. In contact with support to solve this.

Privacy Recommendation:
The phone number can be used as a way for others to query and find their ID. However, this also means that they can see their profile pictures and other details. It would be better to have a privacy settings that hides it from people who are not in your contacts.
Mixin Desktop Site:
Tried to create a safe as I couldn't find a way to do so on the mobile app. Bitcoin Core's method is quite lengthy and difficult to follow. Instead, Electrum provides a better GUI in that regard and most of the other wallets should allow for a better way to create and use Multisig.

If absolutely required, a tutorial on using Bitcoin Core's GUI is far better and easier.

It is generally not advised to use an existing public key that is being used for another MultiSig as this can get confusing.
Payment for Mixin Site:
I could only find Crypto payment, which isn't too good for something that costs $2. Might be better to have Visa/Mastercard through a payment gateway as well?
Mixin Safe Usage:
Using descriptor wallets can be confusing and Bitcoin Core is generally difficult to use with the CLI. I recommend having a tutorial for the GUI.
Confirmation should only come after the safe is setup successfully, ie. after the signing of the message. This allows the user to change their public key in case of any mistake and not exhaust their safe limit.


I ended up having 3 different safes and I had to purchase an upgrade to do so.
Mornin Key:
Purchased the app directly, the app download for APK on their website is broken.

For recovery of the passphrase, it would be far better for the user to manually key in their key instead of selecting from the selection of words. This allows them to eliminate the ambiguity of the phrases. An example would be this: raw looks exactly like row. A font issue as well.

Few Clarifications:
- The website advertises MultiSig and trustless wallet but it appears like there isn't an option for the user to choose to create such a wallet.
- Descriptor wallet seems a little difficult for most users. It would be great if there could be a MultiSig implementation with multiple keys instead.
- Are there any plans to directly integrate the safe into the messager? That would provide for a more seamless experience instead of the current disconnect between the two platforms.

Recommendations:
- Eliminate any ambiguity in the setup step. There appears to be quite a few ambiguous points in the steps for the setup of the safe and it can be confusing for some.
- Try to be more privacy-centric. Allow for a privacy mode with certain features that exposes the privacy to be limited.

Verdict:

I think that the concept is generally quite okay, with the intentions and the user experience optimized. I think that the execution of the safe can be better, by giving the user a more straight-forward way to use it and the integration with Bitcoin Core feels quite haphazard. However, there are still numerous bugs and some questions about usability of the app (high fees, some bugs). Do let me know if you would need clarifications on any of those points that I've highlighted.

My Review of Mixin Safe


BRIEF INTRODUCTION:

In this review of mine, I was able to create the "Mixin Safe" while using the "Mornin Key" Bitcoin wallet on an Android smartphone device and downloaded all apps from Google PlayStore both the paid and free one, done specifically in Nigeria to be a guide for whoever living in this part of the world and will love to create a Bitcoin non-custodial wallet that have a recovery feature and same-time, grant him control over his private keys to use this for successful creation of a "Mixin Safe", as I will be taking you through the step by step processes from installation of app, depositing of fund and lastly the creation of Bitcoin Mixin safe.



INSTALLATION:


1.) Mornin Key:

To install "Mornin key" on my smartphone, what I did was that I heard over to Google playstore and I noticed this app was a paid app which cost #495 in my local Nigerian currency (i.e approx. $0.6), and I head over making payment while using my bank card "Verve" which was successful & I later  notice that both "Visa" & "Mastercard" can also be used for making that same payment, as you can see below;

  

2.) Mixin Messenger:

To install "Mixin Messenger" on my smartphone, what I did was that I heard over to playstore and noticed this was a free app which has a memory size of 45mb, launched on May 24th 2018, and has got over 50k downloads.

 

CREATION OF ACCOUNT:


1.) Creation of Mornin Key Account:

After a successful paying & downloading of the Mornin key app, to create an account, what I did was to open the app and got to notice it has two options (i.e To import an account & create a new account), which I heard over to create a new account, type in the name I will love to use and wrote down my 12 Mnemonic phrase, create a pin and everything went smoothly.

 

Observation:

I was able to observe that while using the Mornin key mobile app, if your phone light happens to blink off & you on it just immediately, you will be required to put in your 6 digits password again (i.e it has an automatic lock) which is a good security feature

2.) Creation of Mixin Messenger Account:

After a successful download of my Mornin key app, I heard over to open it and notice it requires a phone number to create an account, which I went ahead using my Nigerian phone number (+234...) and I was sent an O.T.P which arrived 30seconds later (very fast). So I went ahead choosing my desired name, create my pin and everything went successfully.

   

DEPOSITION OF BTC ON MIXIN MESSENGER:

After my successful installation and creation of the Mixin Messenger, I head over to the wallet section of the messenger to deposit some BTC, and I must confess, I was at first confuse for 30seconds, as I expected to see minimum amount of BTC that could be deposited, but yet nothing was shown, which is a very good feature to be made public, so as to help people falling victim of sending BTC lesser than the require minimum deposit.

However, after checking how much Btc other people deposited on this thread, I made a conclusion to deposit 0.00025 BTC worth $7.31 at around 12:49p.m and the fund arrived in my Mixin Messenger at exactly 20minutes later.

 

CREATION OF MIXIN SAFE:

To start my Mixin Safe proper, what I did was that I ensured my owner's wallet was prepared, and two other  member wallets ready namely (i.e Benita & John). I added those two member wallets to my contact list, went ahead to set mixin messages pin, and then tried signing up through the QR code on the Mixin Safe dashboard homepage through a different device, and I was asked to put in my 6 digits messages pin, which I did and finally got a notification saying "You have signed in to Mixin Safe successfully", and that was all as you can see below.

After everything was done successfully, I noticed that I was grant access to the Mixin Safe dashboard as shown below automatically.

 

So, after been given access to the dashboard, I went ahead to add a "New Safe", named the Safe as "CryptoHeadlinenews", selected the network as "Bitcoin" and proceeded confirm the Owner wallet by selecting "Mornin key" as my private key wallet and scanning the QR code with the owners Mornin key, as shown below

 

So after that, I went ahead to set up members and threshold with the 2 contacts I added as shown below (i.e Benita & John)

 

So after my successful adding of contacts, I selected the $2 upgrade plan, chose the BTC payment option, and noticed I was asked to pay 0.00006674 BTC to a certain address, which I did while using my "Mixin Messenger wallet" for the upgrade activation, and just immediately the payment got confirmed, I noticed that the Mixin Safe got activated without any stress or challenge, as you can see all shown below.

 

   

After my successful purchase of the $2 upgrade plan, I head over to activate the Mixin Safe finally by scanning the QR code via Mornin Key and then got the final result as shown below, as everything went successfully well to activate the Mixin Safe.

   

CHALLENGES:

The only challenge I encounter was that my laptop got bad, and the only option I had was to use my smartphone, which for me to be able to carry out this "Mixin Safe" successfully just as I did, it required me getting 4 android smartphones, that is, 1 for the creation of owners wallet, 2 for the creation of Mixin Messenger contact lists and last 1 for the display of the QR code that will be used for signing into the "Mixin Safe" dashboard. But apart from that, everything went smoothly, as I was able to follow up the step-by-step guidelines as given at the first page of this thread




CONCLUSION:

In conclusion, I will love to say that whoever wishes to have a non-custodian wallet which has a recovery feature, then "Mixin Safe" is the solution to that.

I wanted to start clean, so I didn't read other reviews before I did mine. I'll check (and Merit) them when I'm done.

Initial thoughs
HODL! Not your keys, not your coins! Self-custody! Be your own bank! We, Bitcoin users, all know this.
This isn't a service attractive for Bitcoin hodlers, this is a service that should target the users who keep "their" Bitcoins on an exchange. Imagine that: you deposit dollars, and instantly get self-custody over your Bitcoins.

Now, let's see how much of my initial thoughts are correct.

Test setup
I started with a fresh Linux installation on my spare laptop, using VPN. I copied a pruned blockchain from my server, installed the latest Bitcoin Core version (25.0), and enabled PSBT controls.
I installed a VPN on an old Android tablet, and installed Mixin Crypto Wallet Messenger.

Mixin Privacy Policy and Mixin Terms Of Service
There's one very big problem with both PP and ToS: I have to share all phone numbers in my phone regularly. I also have to confirm I'm authorized to do so. I don't want to do this, and I'm not allowed to do so either. That would (based on privacy laws but also based on the conditions stated by Mixin) mean I have to ask explicit consent from everyone who's number I store in my phone. Can you imagine I have to call hundreds of people, explain to them I want to use an app, and ask all of them for their consent? And if even one of them refuses (and that's what I would do if someone asked me), I can either remove their number from my phone, or I'm not allowed to use the Mixin app. I know apps like Telegram and Whatsapp all do this, but this is a huge no-go for me.
To fix this: sharing phone numbers should be done manually, and only the numbers of the users I want to interact with through your app.
The rest of the Terms look acceptable to me.

SMS verification and first impression of the Mixin app
I used tempsmss.com for SMS verification (+447893932805, Mixin ID: 41189703), and after a double captcha inside the Mixin app, it worked on first try.
Now I have a messenger. The only other combination of "wallet" and messenger I've seen is Byteball (now called Obyte), an altcoin based on a DAG instead of a blockchain. It worked well there.
My first impression on Mixin Messenger is: now what? I get 4 automated messages from "Team Mixin" (the same 2 messages twice), and click "How to use Bots on Mixin Messenger?". It shows a video, which to me is a waste of time. I now need to be in a quiet environment and waste time listing to music for something I could have read in 5 seconds. The voice in the video has a terrible accent, I can barely understand what she's saying. Part of it doesn't even sound like it's English.
Clicking "back" is what I needed to see the normal view, and "Create wallet" looks like what I was looking for.

Security
When creating a PIN, I'm told that the Throttled Identity Protocol makes a 6 digit PIN a strong secret key. I have a hard time believing that, as there are only 1 million possibilities no matter how you encrypt it. Even worse, it's less than a million, because the first PIN I tried was rejected.
This feels very, very weird! I now have a wallet, without seed phrase, and I have no idea how to recover this outside your app. As an experienced Bitcoin user, this is confusing. None of it is what I expected from a wallet.

Deposit
For testing, I deposited a low-fee expendable altcoin (0.001 LTC). It showed up after 2 confirmations, but the balance needed 12 confirmations to update (this is more than usual for Litecoin).

Withdrawal and fees
I tried to withdraw again, which is where it got ridiculous: Network fee: 0.02 LTC, Minimum withdrawal: 0.0001 LTC. The fee is 10 times higher than what exchange Kraken.com charges. I guess my Litecoin is a donation to Mixin now.
Note that the transaction fee for a normal Litecoin transaction is 0.00000226 LTC, about 8800 times less than what Mixin charges. That's not a "network fee", it's outrageous! It also shows Mixin is not a wallet: a wallet (by my definition) gives me full access to my funds, and only makes me pay the actual transaction fee. At least call it a "service fee", now it's misleading. And it's a stark contrast with this:

What good does it do me if I can send transactions to other Mixin users for free, if I have to pay 8800 times more for on-chain transactions? Even if I'd send many, many transactions through Mixin, it would still be much cheaper to make all my transactions on-chain from my own wallet.

This made me curious how much the Bitcoin withdrawal fee is. It's 0.00037 BTC, almost 50 times what I paid for my last Bitcoin transaction, and 7.4 times what Kraken.com charges.

To send a transaction from Mixin, I have to first add the address, then enter the PIN, then make the transaction, and enter the PIN again. That's one more PIN than I want to use for making a transaction.

So my first impression is ... confusing. I see high fees and a complicated app, while I have no idea how I could recover my funds without Mixin. If I compare this to for instance Coinomi, Coinomi does exactly what I would expect.

After installing and verifying the app, I was hoping to continue on my desktop. Unfortunately, there's only a Microsoft or Apple version, and nothing for Linux users.

Are those numbers real? The average customer transferred $1M, and the total amount of assets managed are transferred almost daily? When I see claims like this, it instantly raises doubts. Especially when I see this after creating a Mixin safe:

This page is filled with buzz words, but it doesn't tell me how to recover my funds. That's weird, especially since any other wallet would just give me a seed phrase, and I can get started. The page is filled with stories about people who lost their Bitcoins, but I've also seen many people lose access or have a really hard time recovering their funds after they used a non-standard wallet implementation, some of them with multisig shared by a third party.

It sounds great, but I'm missing the "how". And that's concerning.

Mixin Safe
Creating a Mixin safe on https://safe.mixin.zone/login worked well, after scanning the QR-code. So at least I can continue on my desktop.
This part turned out to be tricky: I first wondered why the Howto defaulted to Bitcoin Core CLI, and not just the console in the GUI. I copied the commands into Bitcoin Core's console, and create a Mixin Safe. I paid $2 in Litecoin (for speed and low fees), which was accepted after 3 confirmations. After this, I got an invite to a Group Chat with Testers, but the users there only post smileys. I already had my own contacts through Bitcointalk, and sent some funds back and forth with OmegaStarScream. At least that works without fees.
At Step 6.2, I realized I should indeed have used bitcoin-cli: "-named" doesn't work in the console, so I started over.
I got it to work, but it wasn't a nice process. Copying text from a browser to a console and back to the browser, and searching the exact right parts on a small laptop screen is not user friendly. I don't think the average Bitcoin buyer (who now keeps his Bitcoin on an exchange) is going to do this.
The result:


Emergency contact
I made OmegaStarScream my emergency contact. This required me to enter a 4-digit pin, which was sent to him. That means I had to leave the "emergency contact tab" to go back to chat to ask for it. When I went back, it sent a new code and the old one expired. This interface should be improved: at least give the possibility to use the last code, instead of instantly sending a new one when I go back to the "emergency contact tab". I had to try a third time, and wait for the code to pop up on top of my screen. Thanks OmegaStarScream!
After this, he made me a safe member. I haven't made more use of this.

Withdrawing from Mixin Safe
After the deposit to my Mixum Safe was confirmed, I made a transaction from my Mixin Safe. I got a notification in the Mixin app: "a transaction need to be approved as a member" and "Please sign in to Mixin Safe dashboard to view the details". The latter is where I created the transaction, the former I knew already.
It's not entirely how I expected it to be: the Approve button is on my dashboard, and gives a QR-code to scan with the app. It would have saved time if it showed the QR-code instantly when I made the transaction. After Approving it, I got another message on the app saying the exact same thing. Going back to the dashboard, I now have to sign from Bitcoin Core. After following the instructions, I get:

This was caused by a bug in the instructions:

The error disappeared when I removed the "=" at the top arrow. The "=" at the bottom is correct.
After this, the withdrawal completed.

Withdrawing from Mixin Safe (2)
I was especially curious to see how much I can withdraw from my Safe: I'm supposed to get one free withdrawal, but if it's non-custodial withdrawing from my own address, I'm curious to see who pays the transaction fees.
This is my withdrawal transaction:

It started from my deposit address, but Mixum added another input. That one pays for the transaction fee, and adds an OP_RETURN output.

Improve interaction with Bitcoin Core
In the instructions, there's often a field with data to Copy to Bitcoin Core:

Then there's a link to the Guideline, where I find the commands to use on Bitcoin Core. It would be much more convenient as a user if you can combine those 2: add the Bitcoin Core commands to the first copy field, so I can copy everything at once.

Custodial?
The Mixin deposit addresses aren't multisig, so for sure deposits to the Mixin wallet are custodial. I was hoping the wallet would actually have a non-custodial method to recover funds, but I didn't find it. I guess only the Mixin Safe is non-custodial.
Now all I have is a PIN, a username ("Loyce"), a Mixin ID, a phone number, a Dashboard on my laptop and a wallet in Bitcoin Core. I consider data in the app and access to a phone number as something that can be lost at any moment, so that leaves a Mixin ID, username, 6 digit PIN and my Bitcoin Core wallet. I doubt that's enough to recover my funds, and the app doesn't offer to save a backup.

Other thoughts

• I don't understand the inner workings of the multisig Safe, but I do understand my Bitcoin Core holds 1 out of 3 keys. From what I understand, 1 of the keys is held by the Mixum app, but since the app doesn't have private keys and is custodial: does that mean Mixum could get their hands on 2 out of 3 keys (even if that means waiting a year for the timelock to expire)? In other words: if a HODLer doesn't touch his wallet for a year, he is no longer the only owner. Is that correct?
• The withdrawal from my Mixin Safe included another input that wasn't mine. How does that work? I assume this withdrawal was still custodial.
  
• Generally, I don't like services that require a phone number, or an app. The reason for this is that I don't consider any device I carry with me on a daily basis as being secure, and when it comes to money, I don't use my phone for anything other than small daily expenses.
• The QR-scanning to open a Mixin safe worked well. So it is quite convenient, but linking Bitcoin Core undid all convenience. I really dislike the fact that I have no idea what it's doing "under the hood". I'm not in Bitcoin to trust companies.
• The URLs used by Mixin are inconsistent: I've seen mixing.one, mixin.network and mixin.zone. I'd say: pick one, and stick to it. Now you're making it easy for phishing sites, as I already lost track of all the domain extensions.
• Compared to Obyte, I miss functionality to send funds and payment requests directly from the chat to the person I'm talking to, instead of having to go back to the wallet and then select the Contact to make a payment.
• In general, before funding any wallet, I create a backup and try to recover that backup from scratch. I couldn't do this with Mixin Safe, and I would never send any substantial funds without being able to recover funds on my own.
• All in all setting up a Mixin Safe is much more work than setting up a hardware wallet, and it feels like I'm much less in control, while I pay higher transaction fees.

From all the reviews I've done, this one was by far the furthest out of my comfort zone. I had no idea what I was doing when I started. I can only imagine this is worse for Bitcoin newbies.

How to Register after Downloading Mixin Messenger

Below are the procedures i follow for a successful registration of my mixin messenger:


1. Verification of phone number: this is the first step you will need to do by inserting your contact number to be used for the registration and it must be an active one because there will be a registration code sent to the line for confirmation which the process does not take much time to do.

2. Creating a username: choose a desiring user mane to bear and insert it as part of the procedures needed to register your mixin messenger app.

3. Creating your mixin messenger pin: this is one of the most interesting aspects because here you will be asked to provided your mixin pin four (4) consecutive times before approved just to ensure you're deliberate about the pin you're giving and to ensure its not what you could easily forget which is a good take by me because I'd like it that way, not everyone can easily remember what they use as pin in some cases except they have used it repeatedly.

4. Add a contact and ensure that your contact also pass through thesame procedure in creating their account for registration and must add you as his own contact as well, same goes to emergency contact, both of you must added each other, but ensure its someone you're reliable with before adding them as your contact or emmergency contact.

The most important aspect of this to begin with is to download the mornin key app on the playstore and pay a little and affordable amount of money for the permission/access to allow for the app download, the whole process was made simple without stress and they provide you with different options for payment methods as you like, this is shown by the images provided below for your view.

Here's were you will have to use your mixin messenger app to scan the barcode on the homepage to enable you log into your mixin safe dashboard proper, this does not take time as well to scan and you get updates from the mixin messenger that you've successful log into your mixin safe dashboard, here are the procedures as followed by me.

To make an upgrade on the plan you wanted to subscribe to, they appear in packages you will need to make a little deposit fee of $2 for the least package subscription you wanted to have.




Creating a New Safe

there's a owner creation of new safe in which you will have to create and scan the new safe QR code with your mornin key app to link them up together.




Receiving a Deposit

The process of making a deposit comes a little bit tactical b cause you will be generated a new address which must be made deposited the desired amount you intended within 10minutes, i have to redo do the process more than twice to be able to maximize the time given before elapsed for the transaction to get confirmed, so in this, you have to make use of the highest transaction fee priority to make it faster and in less than 3 minutes you send it you get confirmed




Withdrawing Your Deposit

You will have to follow the same procedure to withdraw your money, use mornin key to confirm your transactions by scanning the QR code it will need you to sign into, just as when making deposit, withdrawal procedures are very fast as well, it take no more than few minutes to achieve.




Conclusion and Recommendation

1. The whole process in mixin safe is perfectly safe and secured and one could actually make a recommendation for that.

2. The purchase of the mornin key app may seems discouraging by some users on discovering it's not free

3. I've heard about people complaining of the transaction fee to be very high, to me when making deposit, the time limit is so close that 10 minutes may not really be enough except you make use of the high priority fee to get confirmed on time and meet up which some may not like paying higher fee

4. The withdrawal procedures are fare enough and cost less, this is a good start for people to have the assurance that they can easily make withdrawals without issues.

5. I recommend using not more than one app for mixin safe and the mixin messenger app could perform the other functions the mornin key performs because some may not like the complexity of the procedures required.

6. The little challenge here is the platform being a decentralized one but yet request for your phone contact and email address, maybe you can work on that just as the forum operates, you can use an email address but not verified just as the mobile number user will not be verified.

7. I see the use of mixin safe more applicable in an organizational settings where two or more people are needed to sign a transaction just as in the case of using a multisig wallet, corperate or joint business account could be best use of this and also individuals or family can best utilize mixin safe to the best for their privacy and safety.

8. Mixin safe allows deposit and withdrawals without any issues or form of delay.

9. Lastly, i must applaud their customer service for prompt and accurate response, they are best at what they offer.

Mornin key
I tried downloading  the mornin key app from my Google play store but I later noticed that it requires an installation fee of about #495 Nigerian naira and since after reading the past reviews  of others who were also Nigerians, I observed that they didn't pay any fee but rather installed it from the website which was absolutely free and I had to do the same and I was able to install  it free.

The whole download  and installation process was really smooth and very easy and I like that.

Mixing Messenger
I also downloaded the mixing message from the Google playstore and this time it was free and the registration  required me to complete registration  with just phone number option and i believe  im not the only one kicking against this option and it will be wise if you add other options like the email option and that will be more better and more private rather than using same phone number you use for all your deals for registration and I also had to create a pin and repeat that for over four times and its my first time repeating my password and it was funny the way the comments made me it for over four times and you also have the option to add friends and you can chat with friends and have the option for transactions with zero fee and you can add friends either through their phone number or mixin ID.


Mixin messenger security
The security protocol was cool and I also had the option to add an emergency contact and this can only be possible if the other contact approves of it


Mixin pay
Well I don't know why many people didn't make emphasis on this every area but I did  or maybe they didn't do it to my clarity but the mixin pay makes it possible to deposit  and withdraw  withing the mixin messager and you can also send cryptocurrency to your mixin messenger contacts and the best part is that it is free and I thinkni will always recommend this very one and since it isn't rampart yet, I will confidently use this very mixin pay for transactions if the need be.
And I also had to deposit about two btc for testing and it was smooth and it was successful  and I reflected almost immediately.
And I also had to try sending it to my contact and it was very fast and smooth



Mixin safe
Signing in the mixin safe was an easy one as it requires a desktop and simply just scanning the QR code which code me signed in and it required me to select a wallet which I did and selected the mornin key

There were also options to upgrade  and I had to choose the $2 plan and there were several options  to make payment  and I had to choose the paying with bitcoin  but I also noticed that i was redirected to another website and I really don't like been redirected because it makes me feel the website isn't professional enough but I guess they all should get this very one fixed and upgrade  was cool and I had to deposit  and also withdraw  from my mixin safe and it was a cool experience.

Customer service
I love their customer service response and though it claimed to be active 24/7 which wasn't  absolutely correct but there was an option to submit a ticket of your complains with an email and your ticket will be resolved and an email will be sent to you and the email stated that since we're in different  time zones, it would  be the reason for not having a direct response.

Conclusions
The whole process wasn't  an easy  one and it will be better they add an email  option to the registration  and also make the customer service a 24/7 irrespective  of the time zone and country involved.
I enjoyed using the mixin safe but I think it is too complicated and requires a lot of downloads and redirection wish isn't right for me  but I'll the mixin messager designs on the desktop version.

OWNER WALLET
I made use of Mornin Key as my owner wallet I did not download the official app from my play store because I found an alternative .apk file that was cost free. I was willing to use this option because it is was not done on my major device, so I could accommodate the risk.

-Mornin key has good security to with passcode or biometrics to safely store your owner wallet and prevent easy access from outsiders.

MEMBER WALLET
- I checked on my app store and found the Mixin crypto wallet messenger app for download easily and it had a 4.5-star rating already, so it was easy convincing to download and my expectations high on what to expect on the app.
- After completing the sign-up process,


-I was very impressed with how the app is built, the app design is very sleek and attractive for use, it is also exciting to have a wallet on a messenger, I had only seen web browsers that have wallets in them like Brave, but not a messenger. It is new and sets this messenger asides from the rest with the unique feature. It has a good potential to attract crypto friendly people who are social media engrossed.

-In the wallet on the messenger, a lot of confirmation (four) for password setup is required, so it means that before someone will pick a password, they are really sure of it and less likely to forget it. This is also good.

- There are many options of coins to choose from in the wallet side, it will also be good for people interested in the app and will like to have other coins to send asides bitcoins.

- I added a contact to see how chatting goes on the messenger and asked my contact to try out the transfer option on it with USDT, it was prompt.


In conclusion,  Mixin crypto wallet messenger is standard and nothing short of a good job in design because it works really well and attractive for first time users to want to come back.


CREATING MIXIN SAFE
I accessed mixin safe via the messenger. Barcode from the messenger was scanned with the Mornin Key to create an account and the scanning process was sharp and sensitive as expected, the process went smoothly. I created a safe with just one member.
 

 I made payment via USDT to upgrade my plan. Since it is for review purpose, the $2 upgrade plan was okay. My Payment went swiftly and a notification was sent on the messenger app thanking me for subscription to the standard plan.


MAKING DEPOSIT TO SAFE
The first deposit to the safe made for review purpose was 0.00034482btc, and it went smoothly of which a prompt notification was sent again on the messenger to confirm. (It came in a few minutes)


MAKING A WITHDRAWAL
After a new transaction has been created for withdrawal,
there is the requirement for the messenger as the member wallet to scan the barcode created on the safe for approval


after that the Mornin key as the owner wallet is required to scan the barcode for approval too before the transaction can be completed.


SUGGESTION
- Buy option for bitcoins on the messenger will be good to improve the rating of the app.

- The number only option for sign up is typical of some messenger apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal etc. so that people can easily find others on t heir contact list who use the same application, But the Mixin Messenger application is not just a messenger, but also a wallet, so it has to not be like the other typical messenger applications. It will good to have an email option too for sign up, It will not affect the possibility to see other users on your contact list who signed up for the app using their emails as well.

Downloaded the application from APP store. To find the app I had to type the full name otherwise with just Mixin other result were appearing.
One installed, registration process was super smooth, just a phone number was required (to be verified with SMS) Less headache than other app in the market where you are account looks active then you are asked to provide proof of address and ID.
Once on the app I was surprised with the clean UI, Wallet, QR Scan, and what appeared to be menu button but turned out to be just a shortcut to Wallet and QR again.


Profile:
The magic happens, once you click on the profile picture This the real menu button: There I had access to check the different functionality such as the Adding contact, Chat, and settings.
Worth to mention Great to have the option to add contact using MixinID as this privacy level higher then only via phone number.
Cons:
No cons really other than maybe the to add small camera logo and allow directly the profile picture change without going through the menu.


Chat:

 Allows direct transfer, texting, calls, sharing file and more. Great to see crypto and IM combined that can replace 2 app easy.

This review is a bit early, but I hope it's not a problem.

I've found the idea interesting, so coming to try out and review the service was a normal step.

Seeing the website has a list of tutorials/how-to steps, I thought it will be easy-peasy. It wasn't, hence I advise the owner increase the number of tutorials, add redundant information, make it really easy. Imho this service' audience is more the not really tech savvy people (the tech savvy people will complain about privacy issues of using phone numbers for this service, or will just find their own ways of safe storage). It took me longer than expected look into the applications (Android and Windows), the tutorials on mixin.one website, then the actual safe on mixin.zone website...

This being said I did read a little into this or that review, hence I don't think that just describing with images each and every step would still be helpful, there are tutorials and other reviews with that. I will tell my feelings and ideas while finding my way with this .. suite of applications, to say so.


Installing on phones is easy and the fact it forces you remember the PIN is somewhat new and interesting, although it may induce to the user the wrong idea to rely on his memory. Adding contacts is easy (although it's somewhat unclear at first that a contact need to have Mixin account, it's not just a random contact from the phone book). Finding the place I can set up an Emergency Contact was quite a hassle.

The first bitcoin deposit went just straightforward, the money have showed instantly after the 3rd confirmation. Transferring coins to friend are very easy (of course, this means it's all custodial there). I liked the fact I could make the font big in the messenger (overall I struggled with the small font of the UX in the Android app). Mixin Messenger looks like a mix between WhatsApp (including the registration) and Revolut (for the money transfer).



Paying for the service with Mixin Messenger was easy and instant, although I need to try twice, since I didn't have pUSD and didn't set the Bitcoin wallet to be used for the payment. If the ecosystem will grow, this may become very interesting, although the concerns on the fact all the money is in Mixin custody should not be forgotten.



I've looked into withdrawals too. I don't see why and address needs to be specifically saved for the job. And the fees the bitcoin network are excessive. If now, when a transfer costs less than 1$ you charge 12$, what will happen when the network fee rises 20 times?! However, I think that this is a bug.



Creating the Mixin Safe with Bitcoin Core was a headache. Sorry to say, but I think that it's better to avoid that. It started nicely, it went good until the safe was created and I had to activate it. The importdescriptors command was not accepted from command line (under Windows) no matter what (see image). A struck of luck and the idea came to try from Bitcoin Core wallet's console.



I had other bad surprises in the process afterwards (at signing message from command prompt it didn't recognize the wallet, but I managed from Bitcoin Core wallet.
So I have now a SAFE. The address is in my wallet, but I will need Mixin service to actually spend.



Interestingly the deposit was shown earlier than 3 confirmations. But yeah, it's my wallet after all.

Withdrawing from safe starts easily, with user(s) required to scan a QR code. In Bitcoin Core it's again a bit cumbersome, but at this step, manageable.

   

I've went through the pages and the billing shows both the failed transaction (no pUSD) and the normal. But it also made me wonder: what happens after my billing period ends, especially as the withdrawal needs to be approved via Mixin services? I've found the answer in the FAQ of https://safe.mixin.zone/ and it's reassuring: the account is only frozen if the plan is not renewed, and can be renewed when one wants to withdraw. On the other hand, unless I'm missing something, this seems to make it worthy for one to pay for subscription only in the first and last year.

Since I deposited more than 2$ at start (I thought I'll make the deposit too from that money), the last step was to find ways to withdraw the difference. The fee for Bitcoin is huge, so I looked for alternatives. The Beta Testing chat group was really helpful in this one, with pretty fast answers and very good ones too. I've installed ExinOne dapp, converted the bitcoins into BNB (don't shoot me!) and withdrawn them. The fee was 0.005 BNB, still a huge one for BSC transactions, still more bearable.


Conclusions
It's a nice service (and I mean it), much nicer than you may think from my review. But it still needs polishing, and needs it quite badly, I fear.

I went to the tough route (Bitcoin Core) because not many have review it and I'd say now that not many have tested it though, but imho Bitcoin Core is not the software for the audience of this service.

The information is scattered, the apps/pages to use are scattered and the Windows desktop application is just a waste of time.

On the other hand, having a service helping not too technical people set up a multisign wallet for safe keeping their money is great. And the community / messenger / wallet, although that part is custodial, is not bad at all (just it needs improved readability).


I've made a list of advises and bugs I've found, especially for the owner, but maybe also for the people struggling or surprised.

• The service will need to be advertised more and made clearer it's a SAFE, not a MIXER.
• There may need to be done tutorials for the entire walkthrough, especially as there are the applications, then the websites, and you need them all for the full package.
• The fact there are two different tutorials / FAQ pages doesn't help (https://safe.mixin.zone/start, https://support.mixin.one/). Plus, while one tells that only OneKey is supported, the other one offers tutorial for Ledger....
• [Schedule a demo]. I didn't try that out and a demo is a great idea, but it should not be scheduled, it should be a YouTube movie, there for everybody to watch
• Imho the windows app is pretty much useless, it needs either more features (become pretty much identical to what's offered in the Android app), either just save the development time.. (on the other hand then the safe web page should also contain the messenger and wallet).
• Since Ledger is on the list, I think that, with some luck, adding support (and tutorial) for the older Nano S may not be a great effort. It will take time until the old Nano S will be phased out and there's quite a potential user base there.
• Bug: the welcome message and the guidelines message came twice (reproduced on both phones I've installed Mixin app for Android)
• Bug: this page has a broken image (attempt) on it: https://support.mixin.one/en/article/how-to-switch-on-the-dark-or-light-mode-14tjvfd/
• Android: there are two places one can scan QR codes, one for linking with the website and all other generics and one only for linking with the Windows app. I think that it worth considering making the same scanner in both places understand both QR codes.
• Something seems wrong with the withdrawal fees. I don't know if it's intentional, it may be a bug.
• Since the safe functionality is on the website (for now?), the app should have a link to that. Plus, implementing it also in the app I'd expect to be a next step (but please also make the app easier to read/optional bigger fonts if possible)
• I'm not sure why there are two different domains, but it could be less confusing to merge them.
• I think that https://safe.mixin.zone/start should emphasize the importance of an Emergency Contact and where to set it up.
• In some cases (transfer to friend, add address) tend to work only if memo is set or at least clicked in. I see this as a bug, but I don't know how often it occurs.
• If you keep the Bitcoin Core walkthrough, please re-check it on other OS-es and setups. Also it may be better to just make a tutorial for doing this from within wallet(s).
• Imho the app should have an "dApps/extensions to install" link to https://mixin.network/dapps to make people's life easier.

I will try as much as possible  to keep my review very brief and it wasn't really difficult  as I earlier imagined since I already took my time to read and study the earlier reviews of others and learnt from their mistakes.

I tried downloading  the mixin mobile app from my phone and it wasn't a free one for me as I was charges about 0.99 dollars  but I had to download  it from the website and it was successful and I was able to create a 6 digit password on it .

I downloaded  the mixin messager  from the store and I was able to register  on it using my phone number and a verification  code was sent to me for verification and I also had to create another pin but this time I was asked to enter the pin 4 times and this also makes the security more better and one wouldn't have to forget their pin easily even without writing it down.
The mixin messager  has a social check background and wasn't much different  from the  regular social chat app bjt the difference was that you can easily carry out transactions while chatting.

Wallet
There are lot of cryptocurrencies to choose in the wallet section of the mixin messenger and I love the fact that they made a wide range of them and you can se d and receive  any of this cryptocurrencies  directly  to your wallet and I also has to test this with some of the coin sent to me ($10) and it was fast and normal.

trying to figure out the mixin safe and logging it in wasn't an easy task for me as it was first confusing not until after reading the past reviews of others and I was able to figure out that it only works on desktop and I quickly had to switch my browser  to the desktop mode and It figure went smoothly.
I will  recommend  that you do something about this as not everyone has a desktop and not everyone is aware of the option  of switching  to desktop mode from their mobile.
To sign  in the mixin safe, I had to scan the code and after scanning, I was successful  logged in the mixin safe and i must say that I love the step by step procedures and guide as one wouldn't be able to skip any process.

Mixin safe upgrade
There were options for upgrading and since it was for testing, I only used the $2 option and there were also lot of payment options for the upgrade and I went for bitcoin  since it was my available source of fund and the upgrade confirmation was very fast and I was upgraded before I knew it.

Creating safe
After the upgrade,  I went straight to creating a new safe and I had to scan the new QR code with my mornin key app and i was able to create a safe and link it up with my mornin key.

Deposit and Withdrawal
The deposit  and withdrawal processes were cool and they both have time lapses of about 10 mins and for deposit, an address  is generated after the 10 minutes time count which means that , the deposit  and withdrawal  are supposed to be done within the space of 10 minutes each. But I think the time for this process need to be extended to about 30mins or so.

CONCLUSION
Everything is cool by me and I hope that the bugs and errors be taken into consideration and also the email option listed by alot of reviewers be also put into consideration.

So I first started by downloading the morning key password manager.

The app costs 0.99$ however and since I couldn't use my google play balance on the app, I had to use the APK file instead which brings me to two questions:

1. Why is the app available for free from the APK when it's 0.99 on the app stores?
2. If the plan is to make this a paid product, then I think it would be wiser to make the app free to download so that the user can use his crypto (or his credit card/google balance) once inside the app.

The app is extremely simple to use and straightforward. After you open the app, you can add an account which you must set a PIN for to access your passwords later. You can also take a seed phrase backup so you can recover your account later.

Once that's done, you can add your personal accounts/passwords to the app:



But here are some bugs and things which I think need changing:

1. Forcing the user to type the PIN multiple times:  (like Messenger mixin) to make sure he doesn't forget it. Although some might find this annoying, it would be good to have since we're still dealing with sensitive data here.

2. Password complexity: Typing the following on Messenger mixin wouldn't work because the PIN is too simple: 123456, 999999,999912, 789456 etc. The same thing should apply to the Mornin key.

3. The ability to regenerate a password: Right now, the only thing you can do is to add an account with a password, but what happens if a site is compromised and my password is leaked? For a better user experience, I think there should be a button to re-generate a password for an account you already added.

4. Dark theme: It's great to have, but it looks like it's not working properly in certain parts of the app. For example, the seed phrase is not showing unless I change the theme back to light mode:


Mixin Messenger app:

The app is cross-platform but I tested it on Android. The registration process was pretty simple. All I had to do was to write my phone number -> typed the OTP (one-time-password) -> filled in the captcha -> Setup up a PIN (had to type it four times) and was good to go.

The app consists of two main parts:

The wallet:

I topped up the wallet with multiple coins (with small amounts) just to see if everything is working fine and to also see how accurate the confirmation times are, everything went smoothly:



The transaction seems to show (unlike some other wallets/services) as soon as you send the funds even when there are no confirmations, which I like. That way the user knows that he sent the funds to the right address instead of just panicking.

The messenger

I added a contact and also sent my Mixin ID to @LoyceV (Thank you!) so he can add me. We exchanged messages, and some coins (BTC and LTC), and everything went fine.

Bugs/things that can be improved:

- High fees: I'm not sure what the exact formula for withdrawal fees is but it's a bit too high.
- The confirmation times: for certain coins (like for Polygon) should be decreased.
- If you try to log in (I managed to reproduce this) and resend the SMS more than a couple of times, the app would freeze completely. I couldn't click any buttons, type the digits, or do anything really. Minimizing the app doesn't fix this either. You have to completely close the app and reopen it again.

- When locked out of the account: I keep getting this same message:



Which I find a bit misleading. So instead of showing the above, the message should show the "time left" instead.

Adding an emergency contact:

The process itself was easy, all I had to do was tap my profile picture -> Settings icon -> Account ->  Privacy, choose one of my contacts as an emergency contact, and then get the 4-digit PIN for them to confirm.

However, for someone who never used the app before, I found it to be a bit difficult to access (assuming that you can't access it in any other way than the above). It should probably show somewhere in the profile/contact list.

Finally, we have Mixin safe:

The web interface looks great, and just like the previous products, it's very easy to navigate. I first started by creating the safe, scanned the QR code given to me using Mornin wallet, and then added myself and LoyceV as a member to the safe.

I then had to upgrade my plan and pay for the 2$. I had an issue doing this at first, it was probably my fault for choosing the wrong option: "MixPay+ Wallets" instead of the other wallets but that shouldn't have marked the QR code with a success message and showed this exception:



After paying for the upgrade, I went ahead to deposit some funds into my personal deposit address.

And then to test the withdrawal, I had to following a few steps:

- Went to the Safes page -> Selected my safe.
- Pasted my Bitcoin address, as well as the amount I wanted to withdraw.
- I then had to approve the transaction from the Mixin Messenger, and the Mornin key by scanning a couple of QR codes:

Conclusion: So overall and in addition to the bugs/suggestions I have mentioned above, the UIs were pretty simple to navigate and use, and also pleasant to the eye, however when using all the apps together, things can become a bit complicated. I'm not sure if that's something easy to improve though, considering the nature of the product and the need for multiple apps but I would imagine that using a Showcase library and making some walkthrough videos would help.

Thanks, Royse777 for giving me the opportunity to review Mixin Safe. This is not my first review as previously I was part of another review campaign. I found Mixin Safe not to be user-friendly as you would need to use multiple apps. I started by downloading Mixin Messenger from the Google Play Store.

Mixin Messenger

What I liked about this app is that it is open source and uses End-to-end encryption for communication. What I did not like about it is that you can only log in using a phone number. While reading the privacy policy before setting up the app I found out that this app does access your [https://mixin.one/pages/privacy] phone contact list. Which for me was like an invasion of my privacy.

Setting up the app doesn't require any effort. It is simple to understand. Enter your phone number and wait for the OTP. After receiving the OTP create a username and then followed by a six-digit pin number, which you need to enter four times for you to remember as displayed on the screen. The reason is if you forget your pin you won't be able to access the app. In no time my wallet got created.
 
Mornin key

It is nothing but a password manager that is not free unless you download it from the Mixin Safe website. It is available for download on the Google play store for Android users. In my country, the price was showing INR 95 which is approximately $1.15. I did not find any rating for this app on the play store & didn't understand the reason to make it chargeable as its job is to just be a password manager. You can download it for free from the website, but I think the apk file does not work for the old Android version as I was using an old Android mobile with Android version 10. I basically bought it from the play store.

The registration process is again very simple all you need to do is to follow the instructions showing up on the screen. For backup which comes In the end, it will ask you to write down the mnemonic phrases but I found out that you can take a screenshot of that screen. I feel the screen capture facility should be disabled when it displays the phrases for the first time. If not then no need to write the following instructions asking the user to write down the phrases.



Setting up Mixin safe

Before I start I would like to know from the team the reason behind https://safe.mixin.zone/ not being mobile compatible. In today's age, I expect at least this feature from any platform running a web3 application. After being in service for 6+ years and having 1M+ customers mobile compatibility should be the prime focus of the team.

Now, let's go to the complicated part which I think will not be easy for someone new. I mean someone who is new to this industry. The major discomfort would be using a PC and mobile phone at the same time.
 
I followed the steps first step by studying the user guide mentioned on this thread. As I had already downloaded the Mornin key app my owner wallet setup was already done. The next process was to Sign in for which I need to scan a QR code using the Mixin Messenger. After scanning a window will pop up which is basically a request to authorize certain things. You can disallow everything except Read your profile. It will again ask you to enter your pin and it is done.

After you are signed in on the left side you will see the menu. I clicked on Safe and then clicked on New Safe, then add a name to Safe and select Bitcoin or Liecoin. On the next screen, you would now need your Mornin Key as you need to scan the QR code. Which I did and then followed the screens which for me were simple tasks.

Now, I have to again go back to the website and click on the next button. It asked me how many members I need for confirmation and I selected one and clicked next. On the next screen, I was asked to upgrade. As $2 was the cheapest and it served my requirement I went ahead with it.

Mixin pay

I think this is a great application and the team should work on creating a mobile application. What made me say wow when I saw there were multiple cryptocurrency payment options available. I selected USDT (TRC20), by default they had Tronlink pay as I did not have it I went for another option which was scanning the QR code. I used my Binance app to scan the QR code and it did not work as the minimum for this transaction is 10 USDT.

The next option for me was to use TRX. I went ahead and transferred the required amount of TRX using a local exchange. What I did not like is that Mixin Pay has a time counter on the payment page.



I feel it is useless as you cannot be sure about confirmation considering they have Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other cryptocurrencies as these cryptos are known for their volatility and uneven transaction fee. I have recently noticed that the Bitcoin transaction fee is more volatile than the market price of Bitcoin.

Next, I clicked on create button, and the owner approval step was done. I was now asked to use the Mornin Key app to scan the QR code, which I did and it took some time. I do not know why? Next, deposited Bitcoin did the transaction as everyone here did.

Conclusion

My experience was neither that bad nor that good. If I assume that I am new to this Bitcoin or Litecoin mixin. I would have been devastated as I need to use 2 mobile apps and then use the desktop application to get my desired outcome. The team needs to come out with a singular interface regardless of whether it is a mobile app or a desktop one.

THE GRAND BREAKDOWN
The system of networks revolves around 3 innovations working interchangeably to ensure security of data and coins. Where you have the Mornin Key: for securing your private key, seed phrase and whatever important data.
Mixin Messenger: for a chatting window amongst other users and to ensure the possibility of a Multisig functional system amongst wallet features and
Mixin Safe: which functions in safe guarding of crypto assets.

To be frank, I must say I was met with some worth challenge in trying to get the app. This is because, it works mainly a paid version although, there is a free APK version to it but then, the paid version has to do with you having to leave out your payment details as per credit card number amongst others with Google of which, it ain’t an option for me. No matter how promising Google security might seem, it’s susceptible to hacks from time to time which could lead to compromise and we know what follows, leaking of details. I think a more different approach should be used in archiving this process of paid versions to it. It’s hard for a privacy and security concerned user to leave out important details online.

With that been said, I succeeded in getting the APK version to the Maxin Mornin Key and it seems to be a very promising one. It’s an app that nails it to the head on simplicity and very directional in its operandum, easy to navigate and places a clear options before you. It came with an Electrum wallet set up feel about it to be precise and that’s some top level wallet in the crypto space.

You have options to create a new account or import an existing one and avails you the luxury of naming your account to avoid complications in the event that you own not just a single account. Now the app is accessible either by biometric means or password of which, each has there individual susceptibility but, I find the password function more effective as, it takes conscious act by someone who knows to access the safe.
The owning of a seed phrase to it tells you, your in control and that’s what users in the crypto space needs although, on the course of set up, the words to it was plainly suggested with you to fit it to numbers (I hope this isn’t the case on import; on this I would verify).

Notation on course;
Each deviation or even a screenshot to any of the process during set up brings you over to input password and that’s a good step towards security.
Another thing I noticed was, in course of the additions, I think there should be some faq file to describe what’s being added to avoid deviations and ensure more clarity.
For the record, it’s a decentralized safe that ensures control over your keys or privacy concerned data/data set and that’s what you’ll be doing adding. The app features a light and dark mode of which, user privacy can be assured supposedly you activate the dark mode and that’s cool.
Another thing is, logs of files could be kept on the safe and it features a search function to invoke them with its title.


MIXIN MESSENGER
Okay, I must say I was surprised with what I was met with, haven’t seen some of the reviews that talked about the messenger featuring a WhatsApp setup in some ways and it really does.
In fact, it’s a WhatsApp incorporated display and the first interface on agree on T&C speaks volume which makes it cool.
It promises to never share your contact details and features a bot for directives and faq questions.

The Mixin messenger doesn’t only feature a chat platform but, also comes with a wallet through which, you can receive and send over thousands of coins. The coins set up are in order as found in some renowned exchanges and the address to them could either in one of two options.

Either your to supposedly send and then click on the coin directly to open an interface that asks you to choose between send and receive for its address generation or you choose your actions first (send/receive) afterwards you pick a coin intended to generate address. It’s just that simple and it estimates the confirmation block for transactions as well as displays the price of each coin and also your holdings.

I did test its efficiency with a $7 (0.00025sat) at just 2sat/byte and was amazed with its speedy confirmation period which started in less than 5minutes although, the network was about 2.8mb from top but, this was for bitcoin and I wonder just how instantaneous it would be for altcoins.

It’s got a Dapp feature just as you have on trust wallet and this is some cool feature that could let you surf the web rather easily while working on your wallet as well as doing some active chat with other connected users. It’s a new line in the space and the developers behind this are up to something with this innovations.

Just added one user and that be LoyceV with his Mixin ID available on review. Left a message though but is yet to get any back at the point of writing this.

Haven’t scaled the steps of the Mixin messenger, it was time for the Mixin Safe and that seemed to have been the hard part to the whole process. While all the rest needed little or no directives to its setting, the Mixin safe came with a different challenge.


MIXIN SAFE
Firstly, if you’re not well informed of the process to it or aware of its usefulness, you just might never know you never know there is a need for the Mixin safe set up.

The steps begins with you having to scan a bar code with your Mixin Messenger. For this to work you need to employ the services of two distinct devices and that’s unlikely what we want to experience with this innovation. Not just having two distinct apps but surfing between two different devices to work a single app is stressful.

     

     

The steps was some worth directional and followed a progression to allow you go to the next phase but haven’t followed it all round, you get your safe ready. I used my Mornin Key in setting up my safe.
From safe creation procedure, one is allowed to create more than one safe and determine just how many members needed to confirm a transaction for it authenticate. Haven’t created more than one safe, you get the chance to chose which to send or receive coin on.


DEPOSIT
Due to the possibility of having multi safe accounts, you start by selecting an account of interest and request for an address by clicking on receive and the network for which you would be receiving from. This first generates an address for you of which in my case, it was a Bech32 address for bitcoin transaction. After the needed confirmation on transactions, deposit dropped successfully.


WITHDRAWAL
This was initiated almost same way as the deposit. The difference was in the actioned icon which was SEND. Then it allows you to pick a date of interest, proceed to impute address and amount in coins, then proceed. The later seeks your approval of which comes in phases, member phase having to do with you scanning a bar code from your Mixin Messenger and owner approval phase which involves you having to scan a bar code with your Mornin Key.

 

 

PROCESSION TIME
The whole process was swift, your given a summary of the entire transaction and process before a Hash for the transaction is generated amongst other and complete afterwards. It took less than a minute or 2minutes to complete process and coin was already going through confirmations.

The whole process might have taken a bit of time and had series of procedures to it but, it’s all in line towards safety and might have appeared rigorous based on first encounters. On the whole, it was a success.


Summary
* It was an enduring process but there is some relief when archived.
* The Mixin safe setup proved to be more challenging than the Mixin messenger and Mornin Key
* Mixin messenger and Mornin key required password more often to ensure security but the case is different with Mixin safe which could be on standby for a longer period. I think that shouldn’t be the case.
* Mixin safe came with a particular ease after you’ve gone through the process of having to set it up and I must say, it felt safe.
* Deposit and withdrawal came off successfully.


Suggestion
* Having some sort of app for the Mixin safe would be a good move and offer users some more desired comfort.
* These apps are distinct but corporately functions to archive a goal and as such, it would be nice to have them incorporate in a multi-app and have some gateway to switch in between them on a single app/device. Having to function between devices is challenging and not very handy
* On Mixin messenger, I’m not sure about saving addresses as it didn’t come with a particular means of denoting them for easy referencing. Also, the minimum transfer is pegged at 0.0001sat but, its fee is at 0.00042. Just how does this work? Having a few that is higher than the minimum. That should be looked up!
* Mixin Messenger wallet came with a means to swap between values to determine just the amount and I feel with the available coin offerings, it should enable a function that swaps between coins as well.
