We all know Bitcointalk was the victim of several attacks in the past, in 2011 and 2013. So is there any source code for BitcoinTalk? Is it published to the public for exploration, for finding any exploitations, or if it has any vulnerabilities? I am not a programmer, so I don't have enough knowledge of it. But I wanted to know details about it anyway. It was just a curious mind question: who wants to know more about this forum?
This question came to mind because of a recent post I saw about Bitcointalk being down for 7 minutes. That's it.

Bitcointalk was down for around 10 minutes or so.

Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

Bitcointalk uses SMF (simple machine forum) which is open source.
https://www.simplemachines.org/

there is some additional customization, which,  AFAIK, is not open source.

I didn't find anything in github.com

What relation you are trying to draw with the source and that 7 minutes down? A website can be down for many reasons. Server overloaded, DDoS, Hardware issue, Software issue, including any other reasons. Sometimes it takes time to figure out the problem before resolving it.

I think he meant the customization part is not shared. That is indeed the base code for the forum afaik. You can see which version this forum is based on the footer easily. CMIIW.

There isn't any relation nor it was a relation based question. After seeing that thread this question came to my mind. Also in that threat there were mention of attacks of 2011 & 2013. That's how I got curious. It was just a random thought that suddenly popped in my brain.

The original SMF source is public I know but as far as the the other customization or modifications only the admin knows I guess.

I guess theymos is the only programmer who wrote those customized codes since he was handed over the forum. Recently PowerGlove volunteered by coding some forum patches! PowerGlove always creates a thread and posts the sources in forum. So, there are open source as well. But, we don't know about the modifications made by theymos.

Some times a website can get attacked due to it's poor coding, but I do not have proper knowledge to talk about it. Being a open source software helps other developers to check the vernabilities.

So is there any source code for BitcoinTalk? Is it published to the public for exploration, for finding any exploitations, or if it has any vulnerabilities?

Yes, there is a source code for BitcoinTalk and only theymos has access to that source code and he will never publish that source code in a place where public or other authorities can access the code and if they find any vulnerabilities then that could cause much problem for the users of the forum.

There are many security bounties for the ones who can find vulnerabilities on this forum and the highest amount that a security tester can get is around $50k and if you or someone else who knows hacking very well can find those vulnerabilities then the person will be rewarded for his/her finding.

Here's that page where you can learn about those bounties:

The forum was hacked three times in 2011, 2013 and 2015.

Bitcointalk history of hacks and vandalism

Theymos coded the forum and made many customization to make the forum software better in security. He explained why he does not usually make changes in forum codes, first does not have time, second because of security wise.

None of these ideas are new to me. Even if I don't respond to suggestions, I do read them, and they float around in my mind going forward. If it's not already done, then there's some reason why. A big possible reason is that I'm the only person who does development on the current code, and my time is limited. Another big reason is that this is a huge forum with complex dynamics, and even small policy changes can have big effects which need to be thought through very carefully.

I didn't find anything in github.com

I found something but not sure though.

https://github.com/SimpleMachines/SMF/releases

Why you are interested in the source code? Do you want to build anything for your or the forum? I haven't seen anyone looking for the forum source code before.

The Bitcointalk forum is built using the open-source Simple Machine Forums software (SMF), even though Bitcointalk itself is closed-source.
SMF is the software that helps create and run forums. It gives you the tools to manage and organize forum features.
It's essentially a template that allows for the rapid creation of forums with minimal effort, while also providing administrators the flexibility to tailor it to their specific requirements.

If he wants to launch a forum all he needs is a domain and Cpanel and there are ready scripts in the Cpanel like SMF no need for a source code, The forum uses one of the original SMF themes and version and I don't think the admin will change the theme because it is coded for security and maybe the modifications software that are being used is commissioned and not coming from third parties, there are some risks using a third party mod software.

The forum downtime for a few minutes has nothing to do with whether the BitcoinTalk source code is open or closed. There are many reasons why any site might stop for a few minutes, such as maintenance, exposure to an attack, or anything else.

As for the source code for BitcoinTalk, it is open, as most members indicated, but in my opinion, it is not good for it to be completely open because open source is a double-edged sword. Hackers can view the open source code and exploit the loopholes in the code to attack the forum.

bitmover gave you your answer, SMF is Simple Machines Forums and this is what is being used for bitcointalk. And yes, it's open source but not the bitcointalk forum.
You can create your own forum using SMF but no one can get the data or user details for any forum, that's kept private for the accounts with administrative powers.
And to get your forum at this level is kinda impossible now. This is the go to place for everyone in Crypto.

As for the source code for BitcoinTalk, it is open, as most members indicated, but in my opinion, it is not good for it to be completely open because open source is a double-edged sword. Hackers can view the open source code and exploit the loopholes in the code to attack the forum.

Open source is best when there are so many people interested in the project and its code. So, many developers will be working actively to monitor vulnerabilities and will like discover a bug before it will escalate. An open source code project where many people are not interested in the maintenance of the code is a time bomb waiting explosion. This is because, since not many people are interested in the project, bad players will have enough chances of exploiting the code and do their worse. This is the reason no everyone that wants their code open, opens it.

If there are loopholes hackers can discover them anyway, but with closed source the public will not have a clue what happened or the extent of the breach.
Open source codes are infinitely better for the privacy and security of the users of the website and should be encouraged for all platforms that can opt for it.

Bitcointalk is using a very old version of SMF  because 1.0 and 1.19 license is restrictive it allows the user to modify the source compared to other and newer versions but the user of versions 1.0 and 1.1 are not allowed to redistribute or release the software without written permission from SMF team.

The user can modify the script according to their needs but any modification they can create cannot be release in public that is why the Bitcointalk version of SMF is unique in its own way

Are you going to use it for trivia or something? Since you are not a programmer I cannot see any value for you knowing that you can see or read the source code. Like what is it for aside from "knowing" it and getting to know the "forum" or something like that?

Do you want to create something similar to this forum? I think SMF is easy to setup.

I already explained bro that's easy to set up but you cannot get version 1.0 or 1.2 anymore it's the only version where the license is restrictive so the user can modify it.

Two years ago I had 1.1 in their gallery but I cannot replicate the width and the length every time I post an image as they do here in Bitcointalk.

In case of an attack or exploit there's always a backup coming from the host, The host keeps as long as a week in their backup, and besides the forum's security is enhanced.

Sorry for that. I wasn't able to read your reply on the thread. But getting it running is easy right? Is it just that the modification that is hard?

What happened to this? Why were you even trying to rreplicate it?

For sure there are backups here. Secure more than ever.
