Greek subforum here needs moderation

The Greek subforum in bitcointalk currently has no moderator. There used to be a single moderator but I guess he became busy with life and gave the forum up.

If theymos would be kind enough to assign a moderator, I can say that I volunteer for the role.
I have been a member of this forum since 2013 and I am a native Greek speaker with activity in the Greek community.
Most threads that were removed for spam in the Greek community were reported by me, global moderators can attest for this perhaps.

Anyway, hopefully theymos listens. No need to dedicate this entire thread to me. If theymos decided to add a mod it could be me or anyone else really. It's just that someone active needs to help on the Greek subforum. Other members of th Greek community have also been saying the same as it becomes evident by recent threads.

Mods are replaced rather slowly around here even when a current mod becomes inactive and there is high evidence that the board is getting overrun with spam. Things move much slower in the local board section, maybe owing to the language barrier for the admin.

I'll like to see each local board moderated just as we have with almost every regular board. If there's enough activity to warrant granting  the users their own community, there should be some sort of moderation in place to regulate that community.

Theymos works in a mysterious ways..
He might asked someone or you to get create a poll in your community and get few user listed to vote, whomever gets the higher numbers of vote would be assigned as mod, again it may be a trusted based selection where he thinks that person will not jeopardize the position that would be given to him/her for security reasons. And of course your community needs a mod, but for now you can still report those you founds not worthy in the community to the mod and when theymos see to it then he will decide.

There are many english mods that are not active I don't know why theymos has leave them to remain there instead of changing and putting more active and vibrant user to act on that role. I believe your community also has more reputable people so I believe you should all put heads together to know what to do, just as we are seeking to have our subforum at a time will required mods to act on those board to be able to put post where they belongs.

Some local boards are suffering due to lack of moderation. Let's see the Hebrew for instance. There Is still this inappropriate topic in there and this one, both of which are over a half of year there so not to be reported as it is about "cleanliness". If there was a moderator monitoring that section those topics should have been deleted months ago.

So I totally support your idea of getting a mod for your section. But until then don't forget to report all spam and trash in your section to help global mods to make actions on cleaning your board. If reporting, your board can be much cleaner.

You just woke up recent weeks and you don't know that earlier this year, there is a Request for the moderator position in Greek board.

Theymos must see it is needed and there is a procedure to get that position. Do you think you meet any criteria mentioned there?

Report a lot of posts and be a very active member of the community and theymos may ask you eventually.

Report history is the most important consideration for a moderator candidate. Over the forum's many years, relatively "newbie" members with good report histories have consistently done much better as mods than veteran, well-respected members with poor report histories. That said, not all reports are equal, so a simple report count doesn't tell the whole story. Also, in addition to report histories, it's necessary to consider factors such as the ability of the candidate to be neutral, their trustworthiness, etc. It's also nice to choose a moderator who people generally already trust/respect, but sometimes this is outweighed by other factors.

If a poll is created, I will not completely ignore the results, but I will also not use it as a primary influence. I'm more interested in arguments people have for or against certain candidates.

Here are the top non-bad report counts for the German sections over the last 6 months, along with the German boards which those reports covered (broader coverage being better).

One thing about moderation you should know, forum would  logically hire a new mod if the work load of global mods is too much to handle the local boards, and said local boards having a lot of unhandled reports.

Otherwise the best you can do is to keep reporting accurately and let global mods handle the reports, you could also explain in 1-2 lines as to why you are reporting such posts, that way mods would have something useful since they can't understand your native language to judge the accuracy of the reports.

If you all do this constantly and if global mods feel they can't handle all these reports, they would tell admin that there is a need for a new mod. Until then I doubt anything happens.

So if you are somewhat a trustworthy member, you'd need to spend hours in your local board to do that to prove you are up to it.😉

The Greek sub isn't the only local board without a moderator or one that has a mod who is inactive. But let me ask you this: If the Greek local forum users report posts or threads that need attention, do the Super Mods handle such reports correctly? Do the reported posts get deleted, moved, locked, or are they simply ignored? You mentioned in OP that you reported plenty of posts already, so the staff did their job in the past. Did something change in the meantime?

I suggest that to speed up your application, to add analyzes of the your LB, which you can found here --->  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5231446.0 If your LB is active and there is unwanted spam activity, the probability of appointing a new mod will be high.
As for the moderator selection mechanism, we have the case of selecting a @Politics & Society moderator, who was in the account that have most positive reports in the last 120 days. you may not be selected if there is a more active member.

If I were to suggest I'd say the op submit an application, maybe it may get a faster audience than if he states his desire here. For now, he's the only person indicating an interest and as such putting up a poll won't be necessary, it will only take time if anything.

Yes reports work for excessive spam but we'd need new sticky posts. The ones up have not been updated for over 5 years. Someone speaking the language is needed to pin these posts and curate them.

I see. As a workaround solution, you can always make the changes you think should be made, with input from the other members from the Greek community, and then PM the global moderators and ask them if they can edit and update the content in the sticky threads accordingly. I think they would do that. For everything else, just keep reporting what you believe isn't in accordance with the rules and hope that one day the admins will deem it necessary to find a new local mod.

Though I've seen some situations whereby a board moderator may but be active on the forum for some reasons best known to him, but that doesn't equally means tgat when a post is being reported it's not being attended to, I don't know or rather let me say am not sure if there's a way every reported post appears to the moderators aside the ones assigned for that thread to take action on them, maybe another reason why some boards are having upto two moderators, maybe if one is not active online, the other could cover up.

Some local boards could definitely use their own moderator, but Hebrew is not one of them as its been dead for years. For example, since the beginning of this year only 33 posts were written there so global moderaor shouldn't  have any issues sorting out those if reported.


@alani123 I don't wanna sound pessimistic, but we (members of Croatian board) are asking for our own moderator for years (ever since Lauda stepped down) and still waiting for one, despite being way more active board than yours (as that's probably one of the factors when deciding). Anyway, good luck with your request.

Main problem that inactive boards have no one to report. If one of the topics I mentioned was deleted after mentioning it here, the other stays because it's about cleanliness. If we look at the topic written in English about translations into Russian and Ukrainian, Hebrew board is definitely not a right place for it: if it was for Hebrew translations it'd been written in Hebrew or Hebrew'd been mentioned, but it is about English (written in it), Russian and Ukrainian. And there is no active members who would report it. So it is better that someone to follow that board on a regular base to delete what is obviously not corresponding (even if we talk about just cleanliness) to the board before it starts to be too old case.

Our local board once had moderator but since then we asked to get a new one many times and there was never any answer.
Good solution would be for each local board to have their own local moderator, but I don't think Greek board is very active, it's constantly on the bottom of activity board so I don't think there is real danger of a big spam attack.
