I'm not sure about Fortaleza too, but as I see, when a team isn't seen as a threat by another clubs, they don't put a lot of effort on the matches against this team, saving the stamina of the players to play against the ones which they consider to be the biggest challenges of the championship.

Maybe Fortaleza found on it the gap they needed to advance further in the championship with a balanced squad, running below the radar of their competitors. So far it has been working nicely.
