Thanks for this thread.

Has anyone been able to figure out how to SSH into this unit? I don't know if Canaan wants people to do this, but they did leave the port open, so I'm confident someone can find a way.

I'd love to be able to programmatically adjust settings, and wonder if getting access via SSH would allow for that.

What exactly would you adjust? There is an announcement of Canaan that they will release the sources in December this year.

I'd like to be able to adjust the speed programmatically. Maybe create a program to tie it to the ambient temperature of the room.

It would also be fun to be able to adjust the lighting too, though less practical. I don't know, maybe there are other things we could do if we had shell access.

That's great that they say they are releasing the sources, but I'm not holding my breath on that one!

I'm going to try removing the plastic grill like you mentioned in another post to improve airflow and maybe if that helps out I'll try it out on Medium again.

I removed the plastic grill and reduced mine to low speed.  I can barely tell it is running now and has been stable so I'm happy.  If I were trying to ROI with it I would probably be disappointed, but using as a lottery miner I think it is still the best option available at the moment.  I do with that they had a better way to order them but I got my unit eventually and I think it's probably the only miner I've purchased with a credit card, so there's that...

yeah grill removal helps.

plus I have black and white models so I can swap the grills for an arty effect if I choose. Wink

Hi,

Let's clarify one thing straight away, I don't need clicks because I'm not an influencer for a living! OK?

Well, like all the members of this forum I am a simple mining enthusiast but I am also an electrical engineer!

So let's explain what happened...

...My problem was a chip near the USB-C broken, probably when I tried to open the case...
Even though I was very careful it still broke!

>>>>>>>   SO I RECOMMEND YOU DON'T DO IT TOO! <<<<<<

https://www.directupload.eu/file/d/8584/qcgrvxzz_jpg.htm

This chip its a bobine-regulator and the solder is back not from side (L/R) and also its on a point
very bad if you move the USB-C probabily broke this chip!

I have ordered other on USA from DIGIKEY here

https://www.digikey.it/it/products/detail/w%C3%BCrth-elektronik/74438367047/11657931

Anche replace it...

https://www.directupload.eu/file/d/8584/92wzep2s_jpg.htm

Also I do some modifications...

like some heatsink...

https://www.directupload.eu/file/d/8584/xcwqu736_jpg.htm

Enlarge the usb hole..

https://www.directupload.eu/file/d/8584/6q2waq7w_jpg.htm

https://www.directupload.eu/file/d/8584/4h6u9lxq_jpg.htm

various fixes..

https://www.directupload.eu/file/d/8584/ee5hsen4_jpg.htm

https://www.directupload.eu/file/d/8584/m48e6fjb_jpg.htm

Also I try an ALTERNATIVE PSU like this BASEUS 28V 5A (on Amazon)

https://www.directupload.eu/file/d/8584/wwx5kmbd_jpg.htm

I'll add more details as soon as I can

B10

hello dude. i was searching info arround becase the same problem you have with the nano 3 happened to me when i was putting a good quality thermal paste.
im not good at soldering so i want to ask if you could repair my unit for a price.
we can talk via dm but i get this error ''User 'brontolo10' has not chosen to allow messages from newbies. You should post in their relevant thread to remind them to enable this setting.'', so send me a dm and maybe i can reply to u

thanks in advance:)

After 16 days of running in High mode, Avalon needed a reboot. Unplugged and plugged again the power and just reboots all the time.

Made factory reset, still the credentials didnt wiped out, and now its just rebooting.

Update: Now its working stables without rebooting but works only in Low and Medium mode, until 65. The fault is the GAN adapter, Lenovo runs smooth non stop 24/7.

Same here, nearly every two weeks or so I need to restart my Avalon Nano 3 due to the problem that it reduces hashrate to something like 123GH/s. After a reboot and some Low/High changes it works again.

Do you get the "unsupported adapter" message?

Look the image above.

Apparently chip number 5, the solder underneath works it way loose due to overheating, even though I've only ever run mine on medium power & with the official power adapter.

yeah this could have been good gear. It likely won't last 2 years for anyone.

the usb connection gets hot on medium.

and wifi drops out.

If they made a 2x size unit it would have been able to be out of the usb-c power cord. it would have been a pcie 8 pin

any atx psu could have run it.

shame as it had a good price point.

see the gear below yeah it is doge but if you did it with btc it would be better than any small miner on the market.

My Nano3 was working fine for about 45 days or so, zero problems, it was working in Low mode because of the heat outside and I didn't mind that.
So yesterday I decided to move it to another room, so I unplugged it and just plugged it in the new room, first thing I have noticed is low hash rate, it was always at around 2.4 , but now it is like 0.05 and it says that it is using 15W
That was weird, so after some time of trying to see what is going on, I just gave up and thought maybe it will start working again if I plug it back in the previous place where it was working fine for so long.
Same thing happened there, so I tried today various things, factory reset, wifi change, device recovery flashing, spent hours and hours, nothing helped, it is amazing I must say, in wrong way.
It is some kind of network issue, it can work for few minutes, still with low hash but the network status is green, then it just goes to 0 and it's in red.
Tried changing several pools, it's all the same.
I am really out of ideas, think I tried everything I could, can someone please provide more info on this and how to overcome this issue if possible?

EDIT : Never mind, it was the cable for some odd reason, I changed the cable and it started working as it should.

You mean the usb cable, correct? Must tolerate 140 watts.

Right, I didn't think about that at first, because I just moved nano3 from one room to another, I mean what can get wrong in 2 minutes, something went wrong obviously, don't know how and why.
Plus, device was working but in lower watts, showing network connection problems, so my focus was on that.
Today I decided to test it with different adapters, some adapters are not supported (nano3 says so on the display), I was using stock adapter with stock cable btw, which came with the device, interestingly enough macbook pro adapter 140w doesn't even power the device on. Anyway I had one usb-c-usb-c cable which worked with that stock adapter.

Not all usb-c cables are the same. A generic cable will only provide 5v@1a. The cable MUST be for usb-c PD3.1. Those cable have a chip inside of them that tells the psu & device being powered how much power the cable can handle. ref https://manhattanproducts.eu/pages/usb-c-pd-charging-everything-you-need-to-know

I used cable which came with Dell monitor, I guess it's good, it looks solid and robust, usb 3.2 gen 2, 65w max though, but in my case that's enough anyway.
This is temporary solution, I can't use any other cable at the moment.

Sometimes Nano makes weird odd things. Retry that cable in a few days, and also get a compatible one.

I think that if you want to have fun with mining, help secure and decentralize the world and heat your bedroom in the process, then you have just a very cool and fun miner here! I bought a few and I am very happy with them, not making much sats from them, around 1000sats per day on a pool, but my other space heaters didn't give me any sats at all... Smiley

BTW, some people are saying that the Avalon Nano's are tied to Braiins pool, that is not true. You can mine in other pools, and even solo mine with them.

Also, if you want to control your Avalon Nano from the command line, I just made a tool for that... I have several around the house to help heat the bedrooms, and with this cli tool I am able to automate power changes through out the day, based on the production of my solar panels, and at night switch off the led for kids to sleep, all from cron jobs on my server and home assistant.

It was fun to build, check it out on github: https://github.com/prcolaco/avalon-nano-cli

So far my Avalon Nanos are doing a great job at both heating and mining! Have fun fellow miners! <3 Smiley

You are right. Good job with the script, but the UI does exact the same thing. Undecided
What will be useful is to make a widget for windows so to stick them on desktop and have all the info in a glance.

I heard that Canaan is sending fans to those who purchased the Nano 3, to help cool the equipment, without being requested by customers. Reportedly they are offering the fans.

Does anyone here confirm that they received something?

Yes got it too, it's gift from them to indiegogo backers.
Fan probably good on the alim to cool it down, good grip with the clips, but it requires a USB-A power connector...
Also, bought three nano and got only one fan, but that's cool anyway.
