I already saw some outcome of this adjustments, a negative merit (-161 Loudmouth ) is way too much theymos, maybe you can just remove them instead.

I love this.  My challenge will be to zero out my merits. I am working on it.

Any halfway-decent poster should be able to earn much more merit than they lose due to the penalty. But I recognize that some good posts are occasionally overlooked. So to counterbalance the penalty, I also added a system whereby you will earn a bit of merit just by reading posts. If you want to write a lot, you'd better do some reading as well!

It took me about a minute and a half to figure out what day it was today and why Theymos would be writing a post like that.  I actually thought he'd taken heed of the community's posts about merit source applications and whatnot and had decided to respond.  But nope, just before I saw your post I realized it's that time of year again.

And by the way, I don't recall anybody bringing up the traditional April Fools Day joke ahead of time this year, as has been the case for at least the past 2-3 years.  So I got caught surprised, which I kinda-sorta appreciate.  Heh heh.

It is not yet April 1st in my time zone so I was really fooled by this. I saw a user with negative merit and a poop emoji under their name so I googled if it was possible to have negative merit on Bitcointalk, which led me to this thread.

On a serious note, new ways to combat spam on the forum would be welcomed if they were well thought out and implemented effectively.

Yes.. there is a "new way" to combat spam that was implemented on the forum in January 2018.. called "the merit system," and now theymos went and screwed it all up.

I have dropped under 7000 merits thanks to quoting this jjg specifically long post.

I am making an effort to zero out by the end of the day.

Boo you all who have the prank away from the first page. It would have been fun to see members struggling to read as much as possible to get yeir merits up. They'll have also been scared to post and lose some of those merits. Would have been the first time some did some actual reading (or maybe just jumping from page to page).
