The answer is what do you treat gambling? Forex has similarities of gambling too. For me I will place it under the category of a skill but it wouldn’t be as a forex trader only but rather as a Financial Market Analyst. With the technical ability you get from studying charts you can use it on just every Financial market chart.

Also agree with you that it is a skill because you need to learn how to draw or read those chart patterns, but as an hobby I will rather not generalize it as there are people that trade it almost all the time, some treat it as there work and others could even get addicted to it just like gambling. So a skill to me makes it better

I never tested Forex yet but it looks like it is similar to futures trading where the ratio can be 1:1  or 1:3 which is pretty risky.
I do spot trading in crypto what I can say it needs technical skills to read the chart without a skills you will lose your capital so for me, Forex is pretty risky if it works like future trading but if not then trading on Forex can be used with technical skill and use forex only for a hobby I don't think that's a good idea without a skill.

Putting Forex as as a skill in his curriculum vitae to me is okay because forex is beyond just an hobby but needs you to apply some technical knowledge and have to continue learning to perfect those charts before you can call yourself a successful forex trader. If it was an hobby, it wouldn’t need much of your attention and time to prove that you need to add and understand some technical details before becoming perfect in it. It also deals with one psychology which to me is not needed for something you treat as an hobby. Forex is beyond an hobby but a skill that needs to be learned, mastered and perfected. I doubt that any trader is trading for fun because losing money is not funny in any way unless what is causing you to lose that money is enjoyable, just like gaming and gambling. What joy can any person derive from trading when they are losing money?

I know loosing money is not for fun, but let's come to gambling, you can't call gambling a skill it should fall under the category of a hobby, and in gambling money is lost,  There are hobbies that can actually serve as a source of income, like football, singing, dancing, reading can also serve as a source of income most of us here we do research we read, and at such the knowledge we gain from reading can actually earn us money, am not convinced forex trading is a hobby though but there are similarities between them.

It's kind of a weird thing to put in a CV to be honest, and if the applicant is applying for a position that isn't high-paying, I'd doubt whether he/she has forex trading for a hobby, much less an experience to it. Perhaps the candidate only placed that information in there to somehow 'match' the job description. If it's more into data analysis and being critical to situations to come up with a decision, then the candidate just added that information to give a flair on their CV.

Either way, it can be either. You can treat forex trading as a hobby if you are not risking huge money and is just really interested in the idea of flipping different currencies for a profit.

Forex trading can be said to be both, because only people whose hobby is trading are successful in making stable profits in forex trading, their skills are well developed.  The point is in this trading, it is very taboo to be lazy, you must always read and improve your strategy, that is very important.

I don't get how these to would exclude each other. Why couldn't something require skill and be a hobby, as every hobby i know requires a skill to be good in it. And you can polish your skills with a hobby. In fact it's most likely that you can polish them more with hobby, as hobby is something you are passionate about and keep on getting better naturally, as you are interested about it and studying it in your free time. Training something you can force yourself to do and learn the basics and some nyances without liking it or getting insightful and good at it.

But i think you are actually asking if it's considered as work or a hobby. That would be sensible question. If you learn skills trough your hobby, you will be enjoying your work, as you can apply skills you are best at right to it.

You simply cannot succeed and make consistent income in trading if you treat this as a hobby. This is just a reality. If you treat this as a casino and just to aid your constant impulses to click and trade, you will only lose. Because it is not about being right on the direction. Trading is about mental game where you manage your position and expectations.

I also disagree with the OP saying that trading is for fun, that's ridiculous. To be able to win in trading is a process and sometimes it causes us extreme mental stress, how can it be called entertainment?


And to answer the OP's question, it doesn't matter whether you view trading as a hobby or a skill, what matters is how you can profit from it and not lose money. If you consider it a hobby but you continuously lose money with trading, would you still consider it a hobby and choose it?
Trading has never been easy and the purpose of trading is profit, just knowing that is enough, IMO.

Depends on how you do it but I don't even think it should qualify as a hobby because you're risking money and there's no way that you do that with a hobby. I think we have to classify it as a skill since one can not just wake up one day and start trading. It is a skill because we have to earn from people that are traders for us to learn the skill. Some only relent on getting signals for them to trade and we need to understand how trading really works.

Let's put it this way. Have you seen someone that is working in a particular field, he go to work everyday and does all his work perfectly but if you ask him if he loves the job he is doing and he will tell you No, that's what skill and jobs are, it has two side, a person can loves his job and becomes a hobby and may decide to do the job without any love for it.

Trading is something that cant really be considered to be a fun thing on which we know that this is really just that basically a thing that you would really be needing to be serious because trading is something that
needs to be that totally focused on whatever analysis that you could really make of. You cant really just that make yourself that having positions on which we know that this is something that needing to be done
carefully because dealing up with a random or unpredictable market is never been that easy in the first place. All types of trading risk Forex trading behaves like crypto futures trading because leverage can be taken here.  Although the price of crypto fluctuates a lot so the liquidation here is very fast, but in the case of Forex, because of the use of various strong currencies, its price does not fluctuate much, so the risk of liquidation is very low. Because of this, everyone is afraid of Future trading, but less afraid of Forex.  And use Forex trading. Profit from Forex depends on skill not luck and it never can be someone hobby it is a source of income for someone

In defining hobby, two things are derived from it which are;

• Something done regularly
• Something done at the leisure

If the job applicant actually trades regularly, and they also have other jobs or things doing, such that they only trade at their leisure. This can quality trading to be a hobby to him. I doesn't matter if money is involved. It also do not matter if it is a skill. You can have a skill and use it as your main work and I have same skill and use it at leisure as a hobby.

It sounds odd but it could be true, this could be similar to all the people that enjoy their jobs so much they do not consider they are working at all, however such posture is very rare, as most people simply do their jobs because they are paid to do it, and if they were given an option to make a lot of money without any effort on their part, they will quit their jobs on the spot.

Forex trading is a lot like gambling. Here your experience will not be of much help but your luck may have more influence here. Whether a candle is green or a candle is red depends on whether you are making a profit or losing all your money. When you trade forex with certain amount of money, if the candle comes in your favor if the candle is green then you can get some amount of profit but if the candle is red then you lose all your money. I have seen forex trading practically just to know how forex trading is, but for me the trading we do with different exchanges is much safer than forex trading and our skills are very useful there. But of course, he wouldn't give you a concrete answer because he must've lied there. If I were an employer, I wouldn't employ anyone who had Forex Trading on their CV as their extracurricular activity, whether as a hobby or as a side hustle except it's a job that's related to Forex.

My reason being in two folds. One, what will someone with that type of skill be doing in an 8-5 environment? It simply means they're either lying to show off or they've not transcended past that level of mediocrity and haven't a mastery of what they claim they know. Two, they're going to use company's time to indulge their hobby if they're actually trading. You know how it's with trading. They will often want to monitor their trades and that's going to distract them from whatever their paid job description is all about.

Its not a hobby but rather its a some sort of side job even possible to make it as a source of income if you do really know on how to make yourself that be able to sustain on predicting market. We do know forex/stocks/crypto is really that giving out that opportunity for you to make profits if you do really know on how to play with the movement of prices. I share same opinion that forex trading is more of a skill than a hobby. You can use the same techniques you use to trade this market to trade forex, however there are some slight differences and you must make adjustments based on that, with the biggest difference being that forex is not as volatile as this market.
