Is forex trading a hobby or a skill

I want to share an experience I had today at my work place ,  so we called for an interview, during the interview an applicant curriculum vitae (CV) was checked and under the column of hobbies the applicant put Forex trading,  my question to him was how is forex trading your hobby? He didn't really give a concrete answer to that , so on getting home I made a research on the following

1. A skill was defined as a Special ability or technique acquired by special training in either an intellectual or physical area
2. A hobby was also defined as an activity done regularly in one's leisure time for pleasure

So as a skill forex trading is technical and acquired through special training and then applied to the physical trading market, while as a hobby traders trade regularly mostly when the trader is less busy and also most traders trade for fun,

So considering these points I can say that forex trading is a skill and also an hobby, your opinions are much well welcomed.

The answer is what do you treat gambling? Forex has similarities of gambling too. For me I will place it under the category of a skill but it wouldn’t be as a forex trader only but rather as a Financial Market Analyst. With the technical ability you get from studying charts you can use it on just every Financial market chart.

Also agree with you that it is a skill because you need to learn how to draw or read those chart patterns, but as an hobby I will rather not generalize it as there are people that trade it almost all the time, some treat it as there work and others could even get addicted to it just like gambling. So a skill to me makes it better

I never tested Forex yet but it looks like it is similar to futures trading where the ratio can be 1:1  or 1:3 which is pretty risky.
I do spot trading in crypto what I can say it needs technical skills to read the chart without a skills you will lose your capital so for me, Forex is pretty risky if it works like future trading but if not then trading on Forex can be used with technical skill and use forex only for a hobby I don't think that's a good idea without a skill.

forex trading is a skill that traders gain when they practice technical analysis, fundamentals, money management, etc. it is not a hobby that can be done by someone, like gambling, because trading and gambling are 2 different things. if someone treats forex trading like their hobby, then they are not doing it right in trading, because trading is a skill and someone is doing it right because they are passionate about it.

they can trade in the long-term chart where a few pip increments of price in a month, they still make hundreds of thousands. they stick to their trading position while also busy in their brick-and-mortar business while trading. this is like a hobby.

but some people look at forex trading as their sole business that they trade every minute of the day as the market shuts down on the weekends. forex market is just like the futures market in crypto, they players are pros.

Putting Forex as as a skill in his curriculum vitae to me is okay because forex is beyond just an hobby but needs you to apply some technical knowledge and have to continue learning to perfect those charts before you can call yourself a successful forex trader. If it was an hobby, it wouldn’t need much of your attention and time to prove that you need to add and understand some technical details before becoming perfect in it. It also deals with one psychology which to me is not needed for something you treat as an hobby. Forex is beyond an hobby but a skill that needs to be learned, mastered and perfected. I will treat Forex as a skill and not as a hobby and for an applicant to put that as one of his skills in his/her CV, I will consider them for a job that requires such skills, as well as something that has to do with human psychological mindset.

I doubt that any trader is trading for fun because losing money is not funny in any way unless what is causing you to lose that money is enjoyable, just like gaming and gambling. What joy can any person derive from trading when they are losing money? 

From the dictionary app I have on my phone, it defines a hobby as "an activity that one enjoys doing in one's spare time." 

Therefore, it's possible to say that trading is the hobby of someone, but before anybody could make trading a hobby, they must have had professional skill in trading or they are still learning. A novice to trading cannot say trading is their hobby. 

From the story you have told, that person who added trading to their CV as their Bobby should also have trading as a skill in that same CV, but if it's not like that, then I think that person might be a joke, because there are some certain things that someone must actually have a skill about before saying it is their hobby.

But before being skilled on this niche, you have to go through a lot of bad experiences but not all can endure all the pain of the market and that's why you need to enhance it continuously or at least maintain it if you can.

A skill that can become a hobby or vice versa. As long as you're applying some knowledge on it and it takes time for one to learn, that's certainly a skill.

I know loosing money is not for fun, but let's come to gambling, you can't call gambling a skill it should fall under the category of a hobby, and in gambling money is lost,  There are hobbies that can actually serve as a source of income, like football, singing, dancing, reading can also serve as a source of income most of us here we do research we read, and at such the knowledge we gain from reading can actually earn us money, am not convinced forex trading is a hobby though but there are similarities between them.

It's kind of a weird thing to put in a CV to be honest, and if the applicant is applying for a position that isn't high-paying, I'd doubt whether he/she has forex trading for a hobby, much less an experience to it. Perhaps the candidate only placed that information in there to somehow 'match' the job description. If it's more into data analysis and being critical to situations to come up with a decision, then the candidate just added that information to give a flair on their CV.

Either way, it can be either. You can treat forex trading as a hobby if you are not risking huge money and is just really interested in the idea of flipping different currencies for a profit.

Forex trading can be said to be both, because only people whose hobby is trading are successful in making stable profits in forex trading, their skills are well developed.  The point is in this trading, it is very taboo to be lazy, you must always read and improve your strategy, that is very important.

I don't get how these to would exclude each other. Why couldn't something require skill and be a hobby, as every hobby i know requires a skill to be good in it. And you can polish your skills with a hobby. In fact it's most likely that you can polish them more with hobby, as hobby is something you are passionate about and keep on getting better naturally, as you are interested about it and studying it in your free time. Training something you can force yourself to do and learn the basics and some nyances without liking it or getting insightful and good at it.

But i think you are actually asking if it's considered as work or a hobby. That would be sensible question. If you learn skills trough your hobby, you will be enjoying your work, as you can apply skills you are best at right to it.

Generally speaking, a skill can be a hobby as well because your hobbies are things that you do when you have free time and we all know that practice makes a man perfect as they say, so if you have something as a hobby, it means you are pretty much skilled in it. So they are interchangeable things. You can say that you trade as a hobby, and you can also say that you have trading skills because you do if you do it regularly and precisely.

Someone who loves drawing or creating art, but they might have a different profession so they draw or make art when they are free. Now if they are very good at it, we can say that they have amazing drawing skills even though they don't have a career in it or do it professionally.

So, I believe it is completely okay to have forex trading or any sort of trading or literally anything as a hobby if you like doing it but you don't do it as a profession.

It's not a hobby unless the person really don't care about no matter how much money they lose.

Any other else do it as part-time if they are doing it in their free time only because they want to make some extra money to add into their revenue source.

Whether its a skill or hobby, it needs knowledge and experience to make money in anything.

You simply cannot succeed and make consistent income in trading if you treat this as a hobby. This is just a reality. If you treat this as a casino and just to aid your constant impulses to click and trade, you will only lose. Because it is not about being right on the direction. Trading is about mental game where you manage your position and expectations.

If you treat this as a hobby, you won't have the commitment necessary for it. This profession requires a high level of focus and dedication to be better technically and psychologically. There's no fun on losing money unless you are there to gamble.

I also disagree with the OP saying that trading is for fun, that's ridiculous. To be able to win in trading is a process and sometimes it causes us extreme mental stress, how can it be called entertainment?


And to answer the OP's question, it doesn't matter whether you view trading as a hobby or a skill, what matters is how you can profit from it and not lose money. If you consider it a hobby but you continuously lose money with trading, would you still consider it a hobby and choose it?
Trading has never been easy and the purpose of trading is profit, just knowing that is enough, IMO.

Depends on how you do it but I don't even think it should qualify as a hobby because you're risking money and there's no way that you do that with a hobby. I don't even think that it's a hobby no matter how you look at it because hobby needs to be constant thing that you do, I think it never should even be a hobby, you don't need to spend or risk large amounts of your money in most hobbies so that's the reason why I don't believe that it's a hobby, it's a side hustle because you're making money, I don't get why it's a choice between skill though? Of course trading needs skills which means that it's innately skill oriented.
