The new format of the UEFA Champions League is definitely going to affect the big teams but even in the face of chaos, I still expect the bigger teams to dominate the competition like they've been doing over the years. A careful study of the competition will tell you that it's always be won by the best performing teams in each of the seasons so even if we're going to have a new winner, i think it's going to be one of the best teams in in the competition in recent years. Personally, I think Real Madrid stands a better chance of winning the European Cup next season ahead of others.

I think what will make an impact is the points they can get, because when in the first phase using the league format then they will compete for points with all the clubs there, different from the previous season they only looked for the best of the 4 clubs in each group, while now they have to compete for points with 36 clubs in the Champions League. They will play 8 matches, 2 more than the usual season which only plays 6 matches. And when many clubs have the same points, they have to continue to the goal productivity side, only losing goal productivity will affect them.

But hopefully with this new system and also a few changes it will make the Champions League even more interesting in the early phase, because after the early phase they will return as usual to step into the knockout round in the last 16, and from there there will be no significant changes.

You see, I cannot fault any of the new formats that champions league have brought on board because I believe most of those formats were well thought out before they were implemented. Aside from that I like to see innovations in football competitions bring about a more complicated but competitive game for many clubs which is the beauty of sports generally.

If you observe the level at which even new and small clubs are gaining more competitive grounds within the league, you will definitely see the need for the league to advance in its rules and formats so as to make the game more tough for the teams that are involved but more interesting for the fans to watch.

For me personally, the old UCL format was more exciting, there was no goal difference. If you want to qualify for the next round, you just have to play home and away. Well, with a format like this, UEFA seems to only be looking for money, players are not robots.

Nevertheless, some average clubs can still make it to the play-offs, I have no doubt about that, it happens every year, some even get past 1/8 and it's become commonplace. It's really not just a tournament anymore, it's a separate league, now clubs will have to devote even more time and effort to this stage. Manchester City will do their best next season to win the Champions League after Madrid stopped them last season, and I am confident Guadiola will do all necessary to win the UCL. Guadiola has renewed his contract with Manchester City, indicating that he wants to win more trophies for the club. I don't really know the reason why we keep including Manchester City as the big guys in the Champions League because going by their Champions League history, they don't even deserve any praises because they have just won it once. If we should be talking about teams that have good Champions League records then we should be talking about those teams that have won it more than once and not always putting Manchester City it the picture.

I know that Manchester City have been in a very good form and performance both in their domestic leagues and in the Champions League but yet they haven't achieved many Champions League trophies as Real Madrid did so until they are able to win many champions league trophies then we can see them as one of the major contenders of the champions league but for now, regardless of how formidable the team is they are no different from the other teams that have won the Champions League once and above so they shouldn't be hyped so much.

I think people are saying that Manchester City is one of the most favorite teams in the Champions League because Manchester City has one of the best squads right now and they have also been able to win the English Premier League title eight times in the last 13 seasons if I recall correctly. Actually regardless of the format for some of the smaller clubs it will be a little more difficult because looking at what is happening right now only performance and victory should be sought with 8 matches (2 legs) to be carried out in the sense that this is 2 more matches than the previous format.

A difficulty that has been maintained by Arsenal is only consistent that is always unstable and has ambitions pursuing domestic and UCL titles that make Arsenal squad inconsistent. From this we know that as long as Arsenal have not been able to maintain its consistency and are still too ambition with his desires, I am sure Arsenal will have difficulties in any competition. I think PSG are more experienced than Arsenal in the last decade, so Arteta must be more realistic.

On the other hand, Leverkusen journey in the Champions League next season seems steeper than Arsenal, because as we know they have less experience. Their unbeaten record last season is indeed worthy of appreciation, but it is not certain that it can be repeated in the future. There are so many challenges to be had in the Champions League, which is clearly very different from the Europa League. However, the opportunity to create a surprise is very open, and who knows Leverkusen can continue the miracle like last season.
