I checked this earlier. I thought I had sent my reply. Apparently, Transfermarkt lists only his goals for club competitions. The other figure I mentioned ~979 is inclusive of his international goals, and I also read that it's the figure that Ronaldo uses for his 1000 career goal target.

Thinking about it now, it makes sense that Transfermarkt only lists goals from club competitions since they are in the business of the transfer market, which is focused on club transfers.

As I said from start, as long as teams and sponsors are paying big bucks, why would he stop? World Cup is advertising, so he may try that too (meaning advertising for even more money, plus probably some more records under his name), although that's a bit far and... the years do add up.

To be honest I personally don't want to see Ronaldo retiring from football even after achieving his 1000 goals but I know age also plays its role and over time the impact of aging can affect his game play and a top player like him won't be able to perform as well as he has been performing for many years.

That's the reason why I also think that it's better for him to take voluntary retirement after scoring 1000 goals or a few more than 1000 goals. We'll know about his plans once his current contract ends, personally I think he'll take retirement after the contract ends but still there's some possibility that he might change his mindset and sign another contract. Cristiano Ronald has actually scored 979 goals in his career, not 827, and he is not too far from his target of 1000th goal. This 2026 - 2027 season just started several weeks and matches, there are many matches ahead till this season ending and Cristiano Ronaldo will reach his 1000th goal target some time during this season.

Lately in one interview, when was asked, he said it would be great if that 1000th goal is scored with a shirt of his national team. With a goal machine like Cristiano, scoring 20 goals in a season is not a problem especially he has rights of taking penalties for his teams.

The only risk that prevents him reaching that target is a very severe injury which ends his career instantly.
