This was common when we were playing mainly at gambling shops, then ego was one of the major attributes of gamblers. Everyday we gather at the shop make predictions and anyone whose prediction comes through was usually celebrated as a pro, so it was easy for ego to infiltrate the process and as usual, people will insist on playing until they win or are burnt out. I will not forget the arguments about clubs we support in which many people bet with such sentiments even when they knew that their clubs were not in good shape to win the match. However, online casinos have made all that history because gambling are done in private and anyone still exhibiting this ego is simply fighting against himself.

Isn't that the recipe for disaster? You're talking about sports betting but this applies to pretty much every gambling game. Quite a long time ago I was playing crash on a well-known casino, I was achieving a few minor wins and had stacked a semi decent amount of money, compared to the money I had spent. The game starts and it crashes on a really low multiplier, something like 1.05x. I'm a little pissed but it's all a part of the game, isn't it? Second round starts again, I've already doubled my bet, it crashes again, right from the start. At this moment I'm getting pissed off. I go for round three, I'm not accepting defeat, I'm doubling my bet again (4x since first round), and guess what, it crashes again. I'm pissed, extremely pissed.

I learned an important lesson that day, sometimes it's better to accept defeat, since then, I've been a lot more careful to not get carried away, even though sometimes it happens on sports betting, it's a lot more controlled than the case I mentioned with the crash game.

- try to get at least a bet right to have at least one win for your ego

I don’t want to sound as if I’m advising someone to chase after their losses because that’s what this option looks like - but if I was ever in your shoes this is what I would have done. I would have reduced my bet and go for the one I know or believe are the most likely to give me a win and this time I won’t make multiple bets but just one because sometimes losing multiple bets might give you that feeling that you’re starting to lose your touch so I’d just make one bet and make sure I win so as to satisfy my “ego” and also to remind myself that no one is perfect when it comes to gambling.
This is how I resulted to be a high stake gambler eventually. Most times I see myself gambling huge amounts, it’s mainly because, I started chasing after my losses. What became the result, a high stake gambler. Putting out those huge amounts was no problem no more as I already knew how to suck it up and go for another run. When I lose, I have another go and at this point, it’s chasing after my losses because, I so don’t want to let my money go. Reducing the games, sticking to just one or two of that and doubling the stakes. I often win but other times, it’s a huge mistake and a loss.

The last time I checked my ego had never brought food to my table. Neither has it paved the way for any good opportunity for me to make more money. Just like how having greed is dangerous to a gambler same way having ego can be dangerous. Both can lead a gambler to his doom early. It's a bad habit and I have never tended to win for ego. Most times I win big in gambling I don't tell people around me. Same thing when I lose. All things are kept to myself so I don't see any reason to ego.

I usually accept my fate. If there's nothing to bet on that I know, like, understand, am good at, I don't bet at all. I have a similar approach to every other thing in life.

When I can't find a decent job, I don't try to get anything just to make a few bucks and feel miserable about it. It's not worth it.
It's important to find yourself something to do. OP is bored and looking to make a bet, but if he had something that would take his mind off betting, things could become much simpler.

Trying to satisfy your ego works only for a very short time. Usually boredom and urge wins and you will make a stupid bet again and again, eventually ending up feeling worse than when you were only bored.

At bet sports I don't do it but a slots and casino I do it very often to be honest. Because the outcome is instant, and I can recover instantly my losses before stoping to play and leaving but with sports you usually need to wait several hours or days before getting outcomes and eventually new winnings into your balance or bankroll so I have not interest to do it for them.

Its a natural thing for us to have a urge over something and when it comes to gambling in particular, we must be able to control the urge or feelings we are having towards it, if not we may arrived at where we may not wanted, the most interesting and at the same time annoying of it all is that, the more we keep on moving in the same direction for that urge with our ego to win, the more difficult winning becomes, if we want to proof all these right, then we should seek advise from the experienced ones from gambling under the same influence, they will have more to tell from how they have been dealt with by their pride.

- go out and just accept that you failed miserably at an event you know you're really bad at
- try to get at least a bet right to have at least one win for your ego
- or even one step higher, try to recoup the bets (no way I'm doing that)

Number one is the best option; the last two are bad if you apply it in gambling. Ego should not have a place in your betting; its best that you use your common sense and just quit and just comeback or change the games that you are good at.
All those who chase their losses and eventually lose are driven by ego, who thinks that they can still win and recoup their losses and that one bet leads to another that ends in a series of losses.

How does games that depend a lot on luck make your ego look better?

I would expect that why people get a rush when winning from a bet is because they had a lot of say in the analysis of the game. If their ego is fed, it’s probably because they were betting on something and the other was like “no way this is like this” and we get competitive. So, yeah many times where ego is involved.

What I expect that people are saying is to stop gambling and accept losses. Gamble responsibly and only spend the amount that we can afford to lose. And controlling our emotions is very important...

Quote
- try to get at least a bet right to have at least one win for your ego

But this is the reality happening. We continue to gamble as we think we still have the chance, and luck awaits us. Usually, we think that our last bet will be the winning bet. And we fail again...

~snip~
I think ego comes from emotion and emotion can play a huge dangerous role in gambling. It does in most cases. I have lost every bet I have ever made based on my ego.
And even if I won two or one, I can't remember it now.
And I have seen many people who have lost huge amounts of money by betting only because of ego. So I would not recommend anyone to gamble based on ego.  And besides, I always want to suggest everyone that whenever you feel like you are placing a bet for your ego, then you will understand that you have lost control over yourself. And I would say at this time to take a break from gambling as soon as possible for that period.

Egos are most of the time misleading. So I don't think it will be an edge for you if you are trying to win for the sake of your ego. Gambling outcomes are said to be unpredictable, however with skills and strategies on you, your chance of winning the bet increases. So win your bet because you know how to play the game well, and not because your ego tells you so.

Probably if you're a frustrated gambler due to consistently experiencing losing streak, your mindset will be like this. But if you know that such gambling bets can never guarantee secured profits, then you don't have to force a mindset like that. Instead, win because your strategies are working, and you know how to manage your bankroll. Winning should never be based on your ego, that could only lead to future addiction.

I tried it several times, and the result is not good. I end up losing all I had when gambling. You should protect your bankroll, and ego should have nothing to do with it; pushing for a win is not a good idea. There is such a thing as bad days, and the best counter on this is to make a shift or come back some other times.
Never push something on a chance-based platform, or you will get disappointed.

So win your bet because you know how to play the game well, and not because your ego tells you so.

But placing bets does not require the bettor to be proficient in the sport he chooses to bet on. I have friends who prefer to bet on ice hockey matches even though most of them have never seen the ice in their entire lives. Quite the opposite, my friends who bet on hockey matches do so out of their inner ego to make profits even in games they know nothing about because there is no other explanation for their choices. The same applies to slot game enthusiasts because they know that these games are programmed according to algorithms that do not allow for big wins and the percentage of loss in them is much higher than the percentage of winning, and despite that, they can easily become addicted to them in defiance of the simplest basics of logic.

It is a common trait for gamblers to try some experiments by betting unusual amounts out of curiosity and hoping for a miracle to happen. However, experiments can fail or give good results. Usually a gambler does this with mental preparation and is willing to lose money. However, for people who are loyal to the same management, they rarely do this to avoid ruin. This is caused by bad circumstances or experiences when betting large amounts or other reasons

Oh, I can remember a few moments in the past when we gambled in the hostel room. Most times we have our ladies beside us, and then it pushes us to gamble to win more, so they feel we are very good at winning. You see us betting on our tuition fees more often; we use our feeding money to gamble. However, that was in the past when we were still young adults trying to impress the opposite gender just for ego. Now I understand that gambling is a personal race. We win or we lose; we get to bear it. Ego can lead to more loss if we prioritize it when gambling. Gone are those days when we chose to starve to win in bet. Now, live necessities comes first; only 1% to 5% of my income is spent on gambling

Chasing profits is a big fallacy and has gotten down many people. This is one of the most common ways to lose everything and so many people go down this path.

Why would it have to do with ego? It's just a misguided thought process that many people follow for sad reasons. I'd rather see people play with small amounts than trying to compound the amounts they bet rather than risking amounts of money that could make them lose everything.

So I'd say people have to get things straight in their head. Somehow it's not healthy to gamble amounts that could hurt you. So many people in gambling fall for this. It's not about ego. It's about being compulsive and it should rather be avoided than discussed.

I guess every gambler have that kind attitude the only difference is the time of stopping, some may do it again to some may stop already. I remember doing that but end of lossing again and again, lol so i stopped then try different approach and strategy.

I will probably pick the 2nd choice. "try to get at least a bet right to have at least one win for your ego"

It's not actually rare for me, this mostly happens because I just want to win so badly that sometimes I make bad decisions. Still, if that next bet will lose then I am really out.
The thing about ego is, that it's difficult to control. It's like an urgency that we must get our revenge even if it looks very wrong to others. I think I had my share of a clouded mental decision because I just don't want to accept my loss.
