i do not think wanting to get a higher salary is an indication of not being passionate enough about the sport even ronaldo and messi had high, if not the highest salaries. it is only normal for an athlete or anyone really to want to feel valued this is their source of income anyway and sometimes the higher the pay the better they play and it is because they feel that they are welcomed and appreciated in the club

Probably OP wants to value passion on sports as free which is why he is describing an interest for higher pay grade as lack of passion on sports which is absurd.

@OP, I want you to note that passion is what makes the players you are seeing today to become football player, else, if they have had passion for something else (like business or any professional career like being a doctor or lawyer), then they would not be on the field practicing and going go fixtures. Passion drives you into a particular career, passion makes you to perform well in that carrier and while you are chasing after that career, you expect to make profit or get your income off it and when your income is not getting to your requirement, you will want to seek a greener pastures.

You are correct, but do you also know that some people chose that career not just based on passion but based on what they see will be more profitable to them? Some are just into it because of the money that they know can be made from it.

Yeah, it's still true, quite often, people choose a career with just a little of passion but mostly for the income they will get from it. On like before, you would see some people choosing big career like engineer, lawyer, doctor and back then, no body had wanted to be a farmer (lol).

If you have the skill and you are good, I see nothing wrong in trying to find the best pay. Sports is not just about the money, it's the passion in it that keeps these players strong till they archive success and become very good in their field. People like Ronaldo Messi and others, started at a young age, so it's not because they wanted the money, but they enjoyed what they had as a skill. They worked on it and grew it into something big. They can choose who to offer and who not to offer their skill so it's just like that mate...

A lot of people have different means of organizing this based on their own understanding and concern. I kinda agree with you;it is said that  Football is simple but playing Football is the big deal here because it requires more skills,talents,dedication and passion.Football is a combination of Passion and money,Passion is driven by determination and the love for what it is that you do and the excitement of competition for winning.

Imo, at the end of the day, everybody with a football career needs money. They might like football but I can guarantee that no one will play it at a professional level with little to no pay.

That's not my concern as Money will ALWAYS be a motivator for almost anyone. My concern is that we're moving away from the era of beautiful and entertaining football. The era of Ronaldo and Messi especially whenever they meet in el classico, it was always a joy to watch.

Right from time people go for the money football is a game of fun and money which you can't distinguish one from another. Everyone is striving for upliftment so hence if football is played only for fun without money, how will people know the best player?  As far as I know money motivate people to increase their skill and bring the best in them to get award and recorgnition. all this talk about Saudi league using their money to influence players and players playing for money and not for passion is not even necessary considering this obvious fact. if you take out the fueling of money into the Saudi league to attract some good players into the league, a lot of players will consider that league because of the popularity of the other leagues that have stayed long enough to attract players even without putting too much emphasis in how much the player is to be paid. somehow, when it comes to the case of Ronaldo and Messi, there seems to be some sort of biased in our analogy. both of these players will not play in a club that underpays them but will still take huge pay and get treated in a preferential manner, is that all about passion? football is like work, regardless of the passion you have for the job, the driving force is going to be what you are able to get in exchange for the skill you have.

no era has ever played the game just because they are passionate about it. money has always and will always be an integral part of the game. pay a player below what he thinks he is worth and watch him give you a frustrating performance that is below his best.

But what OP is trying to say is that most players now are not motivated to show their real talent without money. They give their best not to make the audience believe and entertain them but for the sake of money only. It was different when you were playing because you wanted it and never thought about being paid high. But Ronaldo gained a high offer because the team noticed his passion, dedication, and talent. And he deserved it.
But I believe a player stays in his team despite huge offers from others because of the comfort and system used.

Could the economic situation in the region contributes on why these athletes demands higher pay? Because to me, it is often the case. Its not about the lack of passion, they do have passion for the sport they are into. They are motivated but they are not going to feel as a whole if they think their future aren't secure along with their family.

For some athletes I think yes. Maybe if they see that their country's economic situation is doing well then they will also demand for more fee but for some athletes that are purely doing it in the name of passion, I think they will less prioritize money

I think not all and unfortunately this includes those people that are passionate on some things except for their family. They are too busy on their craft that they already come to a point of forgetting other things or people even their own family. Addicted individuals can be one of it but I think they are not far from the passionate people that we are talking about here.

What makes you think that the likes of Ronaldo, Messi and the rest were not interested in money during their time? To the best of my knowledge, football has been monetized a long time ago when people started seeing it as a career. It is a serious business for both the players and club owners. The only thing that differentiates the players of old and the present day players is that the value of these sport called football has increased.

Even with their supposed love for money, they are still good players who know what they are doing. If you do not see the passion in these players, then I think it's just your mindset telling you otherwise. We should not equate the integrity and passion for football with how much the players request to be paid for their efforts. We should watch out for some obvious malpractices and cheats. This is not only happening in football, MMA and boxing stars are in exactly the same situation. Bloggers who think they are professional athletes challenge old school athletes and only for the sake of a show of fame and money. It looks ridiculous, just like wrestling, I am not a fan of it. Maybe it is the adults who's minds have become clouded with age and project their own perceptions back on to the younger generations. Kids often want to follow their idols and their focus on the few best players is still down to their skill I think, but the amount of money they are earning keeps on creeping higher. Footballers have always been highly paid, Saudi Arabia has definitely notched it up a level but they are definitely chasing a vanity project that will not necessarily last long term. It's probably a good thing that these footballers get paid insane amounts and then return to their home countries way richer, because that is the place they're more likely to settle and spend it long term.
