Sure, sure, one can argue that anybody can do what they want with their coins and I've put "donations" deliberately in quotes because I've no better word for it and frankly don't know what those transactions are and what their purpose is. I guess, I shouldn't judge or try to and simply observe because YoOMMV. It might be important for others and who am I to rant about it (couldn't resist earlier)?

Some simple stats as of a few minutes ago from my node's watch-only wallet of Genesis block combo() descriptor:
  • RPC listunspent yields 56,375 UTXOs, including the 50BTC coinbase UTXO which is unspendable
  • RPC getwalletinfo current balance is 104.11129626BTC, so 54.11129626BTC have been thrown at the Genesis block, basically immobilized because I don't expect Satoshi to move or consolidate them

Technically those 56,374 UTXOs aren't burned because with the private key of the Genesis block the key holder could spend those UTXOs. I make the assumption that the private key is or was only known to Satoshi. If this private key still exists and is available, nobody knows, except Satoshi. I won't go into further speculations...

I can simply assume that those coins sent to the Genesis address were a symbol of appreciation to Satoshi for the impressive innovation Bitcoin, I can't really figure out any other meaning to those coins being sent in there so I'll guess that some few dudes who's sitting on cool profits from the prices appreciation would be like Oh Yeah! This dude deserves some accolades and sends some there, others copied until it became a norm.

I've doubts that Satoshi would want coins to be immobilized and I'm quite certain, as I said earlier, he won't come and move any movable coins sent to Genesis block or other blocks he mined, besides what he already moved in the first days. Why risk his so far immaculate anonymity and stirr up things big time should he move any of the coins that are attributed to him?

If coins sent there were a token of appreciationI too believe most of them are then why send huge amounts? Isn't e.g. 913sat or 2913 (2K9-01-03 aka 2009-01-03) a sufficient amount to tag the Genesis block if you need or want to do it? Then donate the rest you wanted to give to some charity or other nice and good use.

I strongly believe that Satoshi would more appreciate using and moving around bitcoins and keep them in circulation than bloating the UTXO set with coins that very very likely won't ever move again.

I didn't do any further digging about the origin of inputs or if some "donations" are related to each other.

Current balance at time of this post according to combo(PubKey of Genesis block's coinbase) descriptor, including the unspendable 50BTC of coinbase tx: 104.29575827BTC

This may differ slightly from what mempool.space or bitcoindata.science displays because the combo() descriptor "sees" all address types (except Taproot, IIRC).

It took some time, almost two months, until there's another substantial waste of coins thrown at the Genesis block:

I didn't do any deeper analysis related to above transactions.

Current balance at time of this post according to combo(PubKey of Genesis block's coinbase) descriptor, including the unspendable 50BTC of coinbase tx: 104.37595725BTC (the difference to previous post's value and newcomer transaction are a lot of smaller dust wastes or whatever their purpose is).

This may differ slightly from what mempool.space or bitcoindata.science displays because the combo() descriptor "sees" all address types (except Taproot, IIRC).

Despite numerous daily dust or sometimes a few thousand sats dumped to the legacy address of the Genesis block, today some entity transfered a whopping 2.6236284BTC as "donation" to address 1A1zP1eP5QGefi2DMPTfTL5SLmv7DivfNa, or whatever the intention was for such an amount.

Tx: 416fcc3f798e9c264384f7c6e2d9db459b4c1d84d4f13c7fcc6e673b7753fcc6

I've a hard time not to judge such a sort of obscene transaction. How much good could've been done with such an amount in many countries of this world?

I don't get it why people do this, be it countless small and the few huge amounts of recent time. The "countless" small dust coins bloat the UTXO set, the larger or huge transfers are what exactly? A show off of the filthy rich? I don't know... what's your opinion?

I don't think it's a "showoff by the filthy rich" since the people sending it are not publicly known in the first place. You have a point though. Those massive amounts would definitely go a long way if actually donated, but I guess every individual does what pleases them with their wealth.

I think the same reason why people transfer dust to that address might also be why others transfer massive amounts. Maybe seeing their 2 BTC or whatever amount in the genesis address feels cool to them, but certainly not to everyone. IMO, those massive donations would have gone a long way in terms of donation, but we can't really talk people into what they don't intend to do.

Yeah, it would be better actually being donated to a real cause considering those coins cant/wont ever be spent or accessed and are essentially burned coins. I guess its better for the rest of us and it makes BTC ever a bit more rare than it already is 😄 I wouldn't mind any donations though to my signature address if anyone is feeling generous 😉

Any "donation" to the Genesis block can be spent but of course you need the private key that matches the corresponding known public key. Only the 50BTC of the coinbase reward of the Genesis block are unspendable which is a special case for this particular block.

But it's highly unlikely that any UTXO of the Genesis block will ever be spent. So, those UTXOs bloat the UTXO set and are practically taken out of circulation, which is kind of a shame in my opinion but who cares of that anyway.

Speaking of it, there's another larger "donation" coming in today...

Well, it took more than a month for some entity to make a "donation" worthy to be recorded in this thread. Though my stance remains: I see it as a waste of coins.

I wonder why the hell people would sacrifice their already-scarce BTC in such a manner. I looked at the most recent few and there doesn't seem to be anything unusual about them. Just basic send transactions without additional data, that I could find anyway.

I saw on X someone posted "Let's all send satoshi's wallet $5 worth of BTC..." in October, so its not a terribly unusual practice. I wouldn't do it, but lord knows I've wasted enough BTC in other ways so who am I to judge.

Man. People send that address stuff all the time, not just BTC. Its received dozens of inscriptions, Runes, and other external protocol based stuff.

It's probably their own way of honoring Bitcoin or the Genesis block, the starting point of everything running right now. Of course, you can't do that if you don't have much. So, yeah, the ones who did it are indeed filthy rich, but it's not necessarily showing off. Nobody knows them anyway.

This seems to be the most likely case, I think.

They are so rich that sending a few coins to "honor" Bitcoin does seem very likely. And yes, the senders might be anonymous now but that does not mean they have to stay anonymous. They may use this in the future to attract attention.

This Bitcoin Genesis Address has 50 unspendable bitcoins.

Now it has 102.97495184 BTC and it means there are people who have sent more than 52 bitcoins to Bitcoin Genesis address.
https://www.blockchain.com/explorer/addresses/btc/1A1zP1eP5QGefi2DMPTfTL5SLmv7DivfNa

There are 45,404 transactions to this address so far.

What’s the take here…

Are the Bitcoins in this address unspendable and as such, lost to the world? In essence, these transactions are done to ensure that Bitcoin becomes the more scares or there are other underlying motives behind these transactions.

I’m just curious because, I truly don’t get it.  I wouldn’t care more though but, just wants to understand it or what could be the purpose behind it.

Anyway, that response of mine posted 8 months ago was directed at the OP. This thread was originally discussing about huge donations, "such a sort of obscene transaction", as OP would say. These aren't just dusts or tiny amounts in Sats. These are more than a whole coin, the one transaction that prompted OP to open this topic being 2.6236284BTC. In March of this year, that's already hundreds of thousands of dollars. That's why I thought somebody burning that huge amount must be filthy rich.

There is some evidence that the earlier large payment was Calvin Ayre attempting to pay Craig Wright's legal expenses in a way that would 'force' wright to "use his keys" -- of course, he can't because they never were his keys.   The evidence is that the timing and amount was exactly what Wright owed us, and right ahead of it a bunch of shills connected to Ayre started spouting off about how Satoshi was about to move his coins.

It would be hilarious if Ayre is stubbornly making 'payments' to Wright by continuing to pay some address Wright claimed to own but doesn't.

It may be a new style of proof of burning.
I hope we don't see any memecoin or token based on donations to that address.
People can have different reasons for sending bitcoins or satoshis to that Genesis address but as a Bitcoin investor and holder, I feel happy to see they burn bitcoins with these transactions and that address.

Donations or burn transactions, those bitcoins are considered as lost forever and they are gifts to every Bitcoin investor and holder.

The founder said about it years ago
Lost coins only make everyone else's coins worth slightly more.  Think of it as a donation to everyone.

...
Every "donor" likely has its own motives and unless someone brags about it, we won't know what those are. Collective stupidity on X is another, uhm, topic. Another reason not to visit this island of (a)social shit.

Are the Bitcoins in this address unspendable and as such, lost to the world?
I think I already wrote about it in this (or maybe another thread). If we assume the private key for the known public key of the Genesis block still exists (nobody knows this, except for Satoshi), then all coins that have been sent to the Genesis block are technically spendable, except for the initial coinbase amount of 50BTC which are unspendable because they aren't in the UTXO set.

My gutt feeling is just that Satoshi won't ever move any of those coins. Why? Well, because!  Cheesy

If I'm right with my gutt feeling, then any donation to the Genesis block is simply frozen until some breakthrough in math or some imaginary quantum computer breaks DLP and finds the private key by reversing the unique relation private key -> public key in finite time and amount of energy.

TL;DR
At present and foreseeable future nobody can and Satoshi won't move any of those coins. Technically they're not lost, practically they're frozen and unmovable. Coins that won't move, bloat the UTXO set. I guess there's worse than that.

...
Grin

I could throw some sats at block #0 too, but I won't. See no point in doing so.

...
Here's a screenshot from my watch-only wallet in Core sorted in descending order of largest "donations". The almost 27BTC are truely "obscene" because they were sent in 2024!

...
If that's actually the case, I'd laugh my ass off. I've already a big grin in my face. Hilarious!

...
We don't know if those coins have to be considered as "lost".

Not quite on-topic to this thread but still related to Genesis block: significant dust spamming started around 2025-11-19 15:39 UTC and started to be confirmed from block #924310 on (hundreds of transactions). No big "donations" though, mostly 546sats dust, occasionally 1000sats, rarely 2000sats.

As justification to mention it here, the dust amount from last 690,000sats "donation" piles up to a sum (still growing) of ~1,304,698sats as of time of posting.

Sigh or rather, wtf!
