At what point is Someone classified as gambler?

I don't really know if similar question or concerns has been raised before, we often say that we are gamblers but does it mean that anyone who gambles once or twice is a gambler? If no, how long could someone be classified as a gambler or what games that are to be classified as someone gambling.

I'm also a little bit confused.

IMO, there's a difference between playing for fun and being a gambler.
Suppose you gamble occasionally, like buying a lottery ticket or playing a round of poker at a party purely for entertainment.  In that case, you’re okay with losing money because it’s the “price” you pay for fun, and you can easily walk away anytime without stress. That's when you're playing for fun.

However, if gambling becomes a regular activity or even a livelihood, you might feel emotionally invested, chase losses, or plan your time and money around it.  For some, it involves skill and strategy, while for others, it turns into an addiction.  That's what defines a gambler for me.

However, most gamblers are risking their funds for the sake of making more money, some are lucky enough and hit big wins, while others have been consistently losing but are still determined to continue their gambling activities.

For me, no, if someone only does it once or twice, I don't consider them a gambler. They probably just tried it out of curiosity or to test their luck. But if someone goes back a few times or does it occasionally, let’s say a few times each month, I think that person could already be considered a gambler. It’s no longer just curiosity, the intent to really play is there. It’s just that they do it occasionally, maybe because they have self control or know their limits.

Now a person who gambles every day and earns money or takes it as entertainment, that person is also a gambler, we may call him a professional gambler, while someone who gambles only for entertainment and gambles responsibly, we can call him a responsible gambler. But what I am talking about is that the person who gambles even for a day, we can call him a gambler at that time.

I don't get it when you said once or twice, did you mean when one gamble once or twice and later quite from gambling, is that what you meant? If yes I think the person don't necessarily need to be tag a gambler since he's no longer playing gamble. However a gambler is someone who gamble more often, well talking about games that are to be classified as someone is gambling. In my opinion I think whatever thing you're doing without a guarantee about the potential outcome that also required putting our hard earned money need to be classified as gambling, Because you're just taking the risk regardless to the outcome.

As long as the person is using money to bet on something, he is already considered as a gambler. No matter how small he is using, still, he is using money in the hope of gaining something out of it. So he may be high roller or not, but any person using some valuable item or money to bet is considered to be a gambler. And you can already see such definition. You don't need to be rich to be considered a gambler. This is why, you can find different types of gambler according to how much he can afford and what particular games they want to play with.

There is no other qualification needed to be called a gambler other than to place a bet in any form of event that does not have a guarantee that you will win. It can even be off the casinos yet still qualify as gambling. Platforms such as Polymarkets offer special kinds of events and those who participate in such platforms still qualify as gamblers. The moment you place a bet with money, with the hope of winning and chances of losing, you are a gambler and actively gambling.

Actually, this has been a discussion we have had before here in the gambling session of the forum  and it is pretty much a subjective topic when comes to what is the true definition of a gambler and what is not. It depends on the perspective of each one of us.
In my personal opinion, anyone who wagers money on casino games in a regular basis (regardless of the amount of money they decide to risk within each session) is supposed to be called a gambler. In contrast, someone who gambles only once out of curiosity and then quits, it is not supposed to be refered as a gambler.

Those people just wanted to test it out, so that is not a gambler per definition. Seen this kind of people and they said that gambling has no appeal to them no matter what they do. Sure maybe of peer pressure, but then after that they will not go and gamble again.

But obviously, per definition of gambler is someone who really delve on putting their money, specially hard earn money on the line and test if they are going to win money or not. So they are willing to take a risk. The thing with this kind of individuals is that they don't have control and there is a big possibility that they might turn out to be addicted in the long run.

To be a gambler doesn't mean that one would be staking games everytime. Though, that has always been the major challenges most gamblers normally have, because they always have this feeling that staking games everyday would going to guarantee them winnings without noing that gambling doesn't work that way. However, normally gambling is supposed to be a game of fun and entertainment, so that we wouldn't be putting ourselves into more losses.

I like the fact that everyone is giving out their opinion on what they feel or think about one being classified a gambler but what I came to understand is that one can actually be classified as something provided the person is good in that thing and does it so well, just as a cook that we all know, the person is always consistent in their dealings to render topnotch services so it's in this category I think a gambler falls into, Which involve them being able to take whatever risks to make sure they get a reasonable results.

For me a technical definition is someone who placed bet on something that has an uncertain outcome, it doesn't matter if you gamble once or twice but the moment you place a bet you are a gambler. Though, what I think is you are referring to people that call themselves gambler right? I think those users (including me) are users who place bet from time to time or most of the time, we can call ourselves gambler however for someone who place bet once or twice, we can call them a gambler but not something that really into gambling like most of us here.

A person could tell himself that he will just gamble once or will just test the waters, whether they are lucky or not. But the truth is that the instance will stick with their mind, and it will be difficult to forget the ecstasy of gambling some money for a chance to win high amounts.

A good example is the lottery players. You get 3 to 4 numbers in the lottery draw, and it will make you think that you are near winning the jackpot. That will make you come back and bet again the next day.
The same could happen for those who didn't get a number from the draw. They might think that it's just an unlucky day, and so they will come back for more.

You are not a gambler if you have tried it once or twice. You try it a couple of times and if you like it you continue to do it (just like in life)... And when you do it day after day, year after year, at some point you become aware that everything is a gamble. Everything can be analyzed, odds can be found for everything and the chances of any possible outcome can be determined... Risks are omnipresent, we know "luck" plays a big role and that things can change (tables can turn) in seconds. When you are aware of all of this and still test your luck whenever you can, then you are officially a gambler.

Tbh I think the word/title of being called gambler sounds like that of an irresponsible person that can easily be mistaken for an addict because of the love of sports and putting money where your mouth is or slots for casino lovers

I believe that a person who has played literally a couple of times in a casino cannot be called a gambler - this is just a practically random passerby in the world of gambling, and I believe that even a person who plays once every few months in an online or physical casino, or places bets - also cannot be called a gambler or a betting enthusiast, because for him it is not a hobby.
And he most likely comes in only because he gets some bonuses, and not because he is passionate about this activity and considers it a full-fledged hobby or a way to win big money.

The frequency of gambling is not the main factor on determining whether you’re a gambler or not. It’s the act of gambling itself so if you gamble once you’re already considered as gambler because you’ve done it already.

It’s not something that you can erase unless you completely stop gambling at all.
